Today's scores and summaries:
Angels 1, Rangers 0 at California (night game):
The Angels turned back the Rangers, 1-0, with Nolan Ryan outdueling Bert Blyleven. The only run scored in the sixth when Tony Solaita walked, advanced on Bruce Bochte's sacrifice and scored on a double by Terry Humphrey.
Red Sox 12, Tigers 6 at Detroit (night game):
The Red Sox outmuscled the Tigers, 12-6, with Jim Rice hitting two home runs and Cecil Cooper and Dwight Evans one each. A seven-run uprising in the fourth inning featured Rice's first homer, a two-run double by Carlton Fisk and two-run single by Cooper. Rusty Staub hit a homer for the Tigers with one aboard in the ninth.
Brewers 4, Yankees 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
The Brewers defeated the Yankees, 4-2, for only their second victory in 14 games. Rookie Dan Thomas' solo home run in the fourth inning -- his third since arriving from the Eastern League August 30 -- proved to be the decisive blow. Graig Nettles hit his 29th homer, tops in the American League, in the second as the Yankees saw their five-game winning streak end.
Mets 5, Pirates 4 at New York (day game):
The Pirates' hopes of catching the Phillies in the National League East were jolted when rookie Lee Mazzilli hit a two-run homer with two out in the last of the ninth inning to give the Mets a 5-4 victory.
