Today's scores and summaries:
Red Sox 8, Orioles 3 at Baltimore (day game):
Cecil Cooper, Jim Rice and Ernie Whitt batted in two runs apiece to support the pitching of Reggie Cleveland as the Red Sox defeated the Orioles, 8-3. Whitt accounted for his RBIs with a double in the fifth inning when the Red Sox scored three times. A five-run outburst in the eighth accounted for the winning margin. Cooper drove in two runs with a bases-loaded double and Rice added two more with a single.
Angels 4, Twins 1 at Minnesota (day game):
Frank Tanana turned in his 23rd complete game of the season and brought his record to 18-10 by pitching the Angels to a 4-1 victory over the Twins, who were stopped on their five-game winning streak. Dave Collins and Ron Jackson hit homers for the Angels. Craig Kusick saved the Twins from being shut out by connecting for the circuit in the ninth inning.
Rangers 3, Royals 1 at Texas (day game):
Before going to Oakland for a three-game series, the Royals lost to the Rangers, 3-1, cutting their West Division lead over the Athletics to 4½ games. The A's, who were rained out in Chicago, had seven games left to play while six remained on the Royals' chart. Lenny Randle drove in two of the Rangers' runs with a sacrifice fly and single, scoring Jeff Burroughs both times. The Rangers had to call on three relievers in the ninth inning before nailing down their victory. Nelson Briles was lifted after giving up a single by John Mayberry. Mike Bacsik yielded a single by Al Cowens and walked Jamie Quirk with one out to fill the bases. Bob Stinson grounded out, scoring Mayberry. Craig Skok took over and passed Jim Wohlford to load the bases again, but Steve Hargan then saved the game by getting Amos Otis on a fly to right field.
Braves 10, Padres 4 at Atlanta (day game):
After scoring four runs in the first inning, the Braves erupted for six more in the eighth and defeated the Padres, 10-4. Two of the Braves' runs in their opening outburst came on Brian Asselstine's first major league homer. The Padres pecked away to tie the score before the Braves broke the game wide open in the eighth. Darrel Chaney and Willie Montanez each drove in two runs with doubles.
Dodgers 2, Reds 1 at Los Angeles (day game):
The Dodgers, who had lost five times to Pat Zachry this season, caught up with the rookie righthander and defeated the Reds, 2-1. The Dodgers nicked Zachry for a run in the third inning on a single by Kevin Pasley, sacrifice by Charlie Hough and double by Bill Buckner. The deciding run followed in the fourth when Steve Garvey scored on an infield out by John Hale. Don Werner batted in the Reds' run with a double in the sixth.
[DH] Phillies 4, Expos 1 (day game) / Phillies 2, Expos 1 at Montreal (day game):
The Phillies clinched the East Division championship with a 4-1 victory in the opener of a doubleheader and then made it more positive by also defeating the Expos, 2-1, in the nightcap, which was called after seven innings because of rain. Greg Luzinski hit his first homer since August 26 to nail down the Phillies' title. Dave Cash walked and Jerry Martin singled before Luzinski smashed his round-tripper in the sixth inning. The Expos came back with a run in their half on a walk to Wayne Garrett and double by Andre Dawson, but the Phillies added an insurance marker in the seventh when Garry Maddox singled, stole second and crossed the plate on a single by Jim Lonborg. In the rain-shortened second game, Terry Harmon was safe on an error in the third inning, stole second and scored the Phillies' first run on a single by Jay Johnstone. Fred Andrews singled in the sixth, advanced on an error by Pat Scanlon and counted the deciding run on a single by Tim Blackwell.
Mets 2, Cubs 1 at New York (day game):
Jerry Koosman pitched six hitless innings before being knocked out in the seventh, but Bob Apodaca relieved and saved the Mets' 2-1 victory over the Cubs. The Mets counted in the second on a triple by Bud Harrelson and infield out by Leo Foster. Their deciding run in the fifth resulted from a spell of wildness by Bill Bonham, who walked Foster, uncorked a wild pitch and, after an infield out, threw another wild pitch. The Cubs chased Koosman with their run in the seventh on singles by Mick Kelleher, Manny Trillo, Jerry Morales and George Mitterwald. Apodaca, relieving with none out, retired three straight pinch-hitters without another run scoring.
Giants 5, Astros 1 at San Francisco (day game):
Collecting four hits, Gary Thomasson scored two of the Giants' runs and batted in one in a 5-1 victory over the Astros. The Giants broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the sixth inning on a single by Thomasson, sacrifice by Ken Reitz, single by Chris Speier and double by Dave Rader. Doubles by Thomasson and Reitz produced the final two tallies in the seventh.
Cardinals 5, Pirates 2 at St. Louis (day game):
Lou Brock batted in two runs with a triple in the fifth inning and Hector Cruz accounted for two more with a homer in the sixth as the Cardinals defeated the Pirates, 5-2.
