Today's scores and summaries:

A's 8, Royals 3 at Oakland (night game):
The Athletics walloped the Royals, 8-3, in the opener of a critical three-game series and drew within 3½ games of the American League West leaders. A sixth inning free-for-all followed Sal Bando's leadoff homer, which gave the A's a 5-3 lead. Dennis Leonard hit Don Baylor with a pitch and Baylor dashed to the mound, causing both dugouts to empty. Leonard was decked by Claudell Washington and left the game and Baylor was ejected. When order was restored, the A's scored three more runs, capitalizing on the hit batsman, three walks and Phil Garner's two-run double. Ron Fairly hit a homer and double while Bando had two singles in addition to his 26th homer. Bert Campaneris drove in three runs with a sacrifice fly and pair of infield outs. Vida Blue hurled the distance for the A's although tagged for 10 hits.

Dodgers 2, Astros 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
Shortly after hearing the news that manager Walter Alston would bow out at the close of the season, Don Sutton pitched the Dodgers to a 2-0 triumph over the Astros. Sutton yielded four hits in posting his fourth shutout and 14th complete game. Bill Russell broke up the scoreless duel between Sutton and Dan Larson when he singled home Steve Garvey in the seventh, Garvey had singled and advanced to second on a groundout.

Mets 10, Expos 3 at New York (night game):
John Milner hit two home runs, including a club record third grand slam in a five-run sixth inning, to power the Mets to a 10-3 triumph over the Expos in a game terminated by rain with the Expos batting in the eighth. Milner's first homer was a two-run blow in the third. The second game of the scheduled twi-night doubleheader was postponed because of the rain.

Padres 5, Reds 3 at San Diego (night game):
Doug Rader's pop fly single, scoring Mike Champion and Mike Ivie, capped a three-run rally in the eighth inning that gave the Padres a 5-3 victory over the Reds. Tom Griffin allowed seven hits and went the route, a feat accomplished only 19 times against the Reds this season.

Phillies 9, Cardinals 1 at St. Louis (night game):
Greg Luzinski, Ollie Brown and Larry Bowa each drove in two runs to help Jim Kaat end a six-game personal losing streak as the Phillies pounded the Cardinals, 9-1. Kaat, who had not posted a victory since August 21, limited the Redbirds to five hits in his six-inning stint. Jerry Martin hit his first homer of the season in the fourth.
