Today's scores and summaries:

Brewers 6, Orioles 3 at Baltimore (night game):
Hank Aaron scored the 2,174th run of his career, tying Babe Ruth for second place on the major leagues' all-time list, during the course of the Brewers' 6-3 victory over the Orioles. Ty Cobb was first in runs scored with 2,244. Aaron crossed the plate in the sixth inning on a single by Dan Thomas, who also batted in another run with a triple in the eighth.

Yankees 9, Red Sox 6 at Boston (night game):
Graig Nettles smashed two homers, one of them with the bases loaded, and also rapped a pair of doubles in a slugging show during the Yankees' 9-6 victory over the Red Sox. Nettles homered with one aboard in the first inning and then connected for his grand slam in the second to finish off loser Luis Tiant. The Yankee third baseman also scored two other times after reaching base with his doubles.

Angels 3, White Sox 0 at California (night game):
Notching his sixth shutout of the season, Nolan Ryan allowed only two hits and pitched the Angels to a 3-0 victory over the White Sox. The complete game was the 20th for Ryan, who struck out 11 and walked six.

Indians 3, Tigers 2 at Cleveland (night game):
After Pat Dobson was knocked out in the third inning, the Indians got shutout relief from Jackie Brown, Stan Thomas and Dave LaRoche and defeated the Tigers, 3-2. Rick Manning batted in Frank Duffy with a double and counted himself on a single by Buddy Bell to tie the score at 2-2 in the Indians' half of the third. The deciding run followed in the fourth on a double by George Hendrick and single by Charlie Spikes.

Twins 9, Rangers 1 at Minnesota (day game):
Bill Campbell, the Twins' ace reliever, broke the A. L. record for innings pitched in one season by a relief pitcher while finishing a 9-1 victory over the Rangers. Campbell worked the last two innings to raise his total to 165 2/3, eclipsing the former mark of 165 by Eddie Fisher of the White Sox in 1965. Rod Carew batted in two runs for the Twins with a homer and Mike Cubbage accounted for two more with a double.

Royals 4, A's 0 at Oakland (night game):
Larry Gura, who has been a relatively obscure member of the Royals' staff, posted one of their most important victories of the season, pitching a four-hitter and shutting out Athletics, 4-0. As a result of the triumph, the Royals needed only one more victory in their last three games or one more loss by the A's in their last four to clinch the West Division title. Amos Otis batted in two runs with a double and homer in support of Gura, who made only his second start of the season and gained his fourth straight victory, the three others coming in relief. The lefthander formerly was with the Cubs, Rangers and Yankees before coming to the Royals in a trade in May of this year.

Giants 9, Braves 0 at Atlanta (night game):
John Montefusco, the Giants' boastful righthander, pitched a no-hitter and shut out the Braves, 9-0. A walk to Jerry Royster in the fourth inning kept Montefusco from posting a perfect game. The Giants backed their soph star with a 12-hit attack. Johnnie LeMaster batted in three runs with a double and sacrifice fly, while Gary Thomasson accounted for two RBIs with a single.

Dodgers 1, Astros 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
Steve Garvey singled in the seventh inning for his 199th hit of the season and drove in the run that enabled the Dodgers to defeat the Astros, 1-0. Bill Buckner, who singled and advanced on an infield out, crossed the plate on Garvey's hit. The Dodgers were directed by Tommy Lasorda, who earlier in the day had been named manager for 1977 to succeed Walter Alston. After that appointment, Alston announced he would step aside and let Lasorda manage the Dodgers for the last four games of the current campaign.

Expos 7, Mets 2 at New York (night game):
Turning on his former teammates, Wayne Garrett smashed a grand-slam homer to start the Expos off to a 7-2 victory over the Mets. Garrett blasted his drive off Tom Seaver in the fourth inning. The Expos added a run in the fifth on a single by Pepe Frias, a sacrifice and double by Andre Dawson before Ellis Valentine capped the attack on Seaver by hitting a homer with Del Unser on base in the eighth.

Cubs 1, Pirates 0 at Pittsburgh (night game):
A homer by Rick Monday and five-hit pitching by Steve Renko combined to bring the Cubs a 1-0 victory over the Pirates. Monday's smash in the sixth inning was one of only three hits allowed by loser Larry Demery.

Padres 6, Reds 1 at San Diego (night game):
While Brent Strom pitched a three-hitter, the Padres exploded with a grand slam by Doug Rader and two-run homer by Mike Champion to defeat the Reds, 6-1. Rader rapped his jackpot wallop off Fred Norman in the first inning after the Padres had loaded the bases with singles by Bill Almon and Johnny Grubb and a pass to Merv Rettenmund. Champion's homer in the fourth was the first of his major league career. Strom held the Reds hitless until the eighth inning when George Foster doubled and scored on a single by Tony Perez.

Phillies 6, Cardinals 5 at St. Louis (night game):
Bidding for his third straight homer title, Mike Schmidt smashed his 38th of the season, one more than Dave Kingman of the Mets, to help the Phillies edge the Cardinals, 6-5. Schmidt's blow came with a man on base in the fifth inning when the Phillies counted three times to take a 5-1 lead. The Cardinals rallied to tie the score, but the Phillies came back with the deciding run in the eighth on a walk to Bob Boone and double by Jerry Martin, driving in pinch-runner Rick Bosetti.
