Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 7, Mariners 0 at Seattle (night game):
The largest opening-night crowd in major league history, 57,762, turned out in the Kingdome to welcome the return of baseball to Seattle, but the Angels put a damper on the occasion by shutting out the new Mariners, 7-0. The Angels' investment in free agents paid immediate dividends when Joe Rudi smashed three hits, including a homer with a man on base in the third inning and a double for two more RBIs in the fourth. Diego Segui, the only member of the former Seattle Pilots on the current Mariner roster, made his 600th major league pitching appearance, but the 38-year-old righthander was knocked out in the fourth inning. Frank Tanana hurled the route for the Angels and scattered nine hits.

Reds 5, Padres 3 at Cincinnati (day game):
A freak storm dumped two inches of snow on Riverfront Stadium, but the hard-working grounds crew cleared the way for the world champion Reds to open their season with a 5-3 victory over the Padres. A near-capacity crowd of 51,937 turned out for the inaugural, despite temperatures of 38 degrees. Woodie Fryman, acquired from the Expos in a winter deal, started for the Reds and got credit for the victory, but the lefthander was lifted after giving up six walks and seven hits, including a homer by Mike Ivie, in 5 1/3 innings. Randy Jones, the Padres' Cy Young Award winner who underwent offseason surgery, went down to defeat when Bill Plummer singled in the fourth and Cesar Geronimo homered to break a 2-2 tie. Plummer caught in place of Johnny Bench, who did not play because of a strained right knee.
