Today's scores and summaries:

Rangers 2, Orioles 1 at Baltimore (day game):
A single by Bump Wills in the 10th inning for the rookie second baseman's first major league hit carried the Rangers to a 2-1 victory over the Orioles in a duel between Bert Blyleven and Jim Palmer. Wills' single before a Baltimore opening-day crowd of 31,307 drove in Juan Beniquez, who had doubled and advanced to third on an infield out by Bert Campaneris.

Indians 5, Red Sox 4 at Boston (day game):
Bill Campbell's first appearance with the Red Sox ended in defeat when the high-priced relief specialist lost to the Indians, 5-4, in an 11-inning game. With a Boston opening-day crowd of 34,790 on hand, Campbell took over for Fergie Jenkins in the eighth and blew a 4-2 lead in the ninth when Buddy Bell smashed a two-run homer. Then in the 11th, Frank Duffy walked, took third on a single by Rick Manning and scored the Indians' winning run by beating the throw home when Duane Kuiper hit a slow bouncer to George Scott at first base.

Royals 7, Tigers 4 at Detroit (day game):
Homers by Amos Otis and John Mayberry accounted for five runs and powered the Royals to a 7-4 victory over the Tigers before a Detroit opening-day crowd of 46,807. Otis' homer followed a single by George Brett in the first inning and Mayberry's wallop came after a single by Hal McRae and double by Otis in the fifth. Otis also singled a run across in the ninth to join Mayberry in the three-RBI class.

Yankees 3, Brewers 0 at New York (day game):
Catfish Hunter allowed only three hits in seven innings and Jim Wynn homered on his first time at bat in the A. L. as the Yankees opened their season with a 3-0 victory over the Brewers before a crowd of 43,785. Wynn, appearing as the designated hitter, smashed his homer off Bill Travers in the second. The blow was the 291st of his career for Wynn, who spent the previous 14 seasons in the N. L. Reggie Jackson scored the Yankees' other runs after hitting singles in the fourth and sixth. Hunter was hit on the foot by a line drive in the sixth and pitched one more inning before yielding the mound to Sparky Lyle.

Angels 2, Mariners 0 at Seattle (night game):
The Mariners, who were shut out by Frank Tanana, 7-0, in their debut as an expansion club, still had not scored their first run after failing to dent the plate against Nolan Ryan and losing again to the Angels, 2-0. Ryan pitched a three-hitter. Enrique Romo, 30-year-old rookie righthander from the Mexican League, allowed four hits in seven innings, including a homer by Bobby Grich in the opening frame.

Blue Jays 9, White Sox 5 at Toronto (day game):
In a triumphant debut, the Blue Jays slugged their way to a 9-5 victory over the White Sox in an opening-day game that brought out a crowd of 44,649 to watch the expansion club inaugurate major league baseball in Toronto. Snow fell before the game and it was played in near-freezing weather. Doug Ault led the Jays' 16-hit attack with two homers and a single, driving in four runs. Al Woods, coming up as a pinch-hitter in the fifth inning, homered on his first time at bat in the big league. Richie Zisk had four hits for the White Sox, including a homer.

Mets 5, Cubs 3 at Chicago (day game):
Tom Seaver gained his sixth victory without a defeat in 10 opening-day starts when the Mets erupted for four runs in the sixth inning to beat the Cubs, 5-3. With a crowd of 39,937 on hand, the Cubs had a homer by Steve Ontiveros in taking a 2-0 lead. However in the sixth, Seaver drew a walk from Ray Burris and Lee Mazzilli singled. When Jerry Morales and Bobby Murcer collided going after a fly by John Milner, the ball fell for a double, Seaver scoring. Following an intentional pass to Dave Kingman, Mazzilli crossed the plate on an infield out by Ed Kranepool. John Stearns then capped the outburst with a single, driving in two runs. Seaver failed to go the route, giving up the mound to Skip Lockwood in the eighth inning.

Dodgers 5, Giants 1 at Los Angeles (day game):
After serving up a homer by Gary Thomasson on his first delivery of the game, Don Sutton yielded only three more hits the rest of the way and defeated the Giants, 5-1, to open the Dodgers' 20th season in Los Angeles before a crowd of 51,022. The Dodgers tied the score in the home half of the first on a single by Reggie Smith and double by Ron Cey. Bill Russell hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the fifth and, after the Dodgers added an unearned marker in the sixth, Steve Garvey clinched the outcome with a two-run single in the seventh.

Cardinals 12, Pirates 6 at Pittsburgh (day game):
The Cardinals scored four unearned runs with the aid of three errors in the first inning and proceeded to roll up a 12-6 victory to ruin the Pirates' opening game for the crowd of 35,186. Ken Reitz drove in two runs with a double as the Cards capitalized on the Pirates' faulty fielding. Keith Hernandez then stepped in to assure the Redbirds their victory, batting in two runs with a double in seventh and hitting a homer with a man on base in the eighth.
