Today's scores and summaries:
Rangers 5, Orioles 1 at Baltimore (day game):
Gaylord Perry pitched a five-hitter and Juan Beniquez stood out at bat as the Rangers defeated the Orioles, 5-1. Beniquez drove in two runs with a double in the third inning, singled for another RBI when the Rangers added a pair in the fourth and then walked and scored the final marker in the seventh.
Royals 16, Tigers 2 at Detroit (day game):
A nine-run explosion in the third inning, including a homer by George Brett with two men on base, propelled the Royals to a 16-2 victory over the Tigers. The Royals also had a homer by Amos Otis in the fourth among their 16 hits. Al Cowens and Hal McRae each accounted for three hits. Cowens drove in four runs.
Brewers 3, Yankees 2 at New York (day game):
An error by Reggie Jackson in the fifth inning led to three unearned runs and enabled the Brewers to defeat the Yankees, 3-2. After a long run, Jackson dropped a fly by Jim Wohlford, who reached second base. Following a sacrifice, Wohlford beat the throw to the plate on a grounder by Von Joshua, who was safe at first. Joshua stole second and scored on a single by Robin Yount. Cecil Cooper also singled, sending Yount to third, and Sal Bando then drove in what proved to be the deciding run with an infield out.
A's 7, Twins 4 at Oakland (day game):
Only 12,562 turned out to watch the stripped-down Athletics open their season with a 7-4 victory over the Twins. Bill North was the lone regular from last year in the A's lineup. Dick Allen and Wayne Gross each batted in two runs and Earl Williams whacked a homer in support of Mike Torrez, who pitched the route and held the Twins to seven hits. President Jimmy Carter's brother, Billy, threw out the first ball. The A's came from behind three times to tie the score before Williams connected for his homer in the sixth inning to decide the outcome.
Mariners 5, Angels 1 at Seattle (night game):
After looking like patsies in a pair of shutout defeats, the Mariners made it two straight over the Angels with a 5-1 victory. Ruppert Jones batted in two runs with a double in the third inning and received credit for a third RBI by drawing a pass with the bases loaded in the fourth, while Larry Milbourne accounted for two other tallies with a single in the fifth. Gary Wheelock, 25-year-old rookie righthander, allowed only four hits and the Angels' lone run in six innings before his elbow tightened, and gained credit for his first major league victory.
White Sox 3, Blue Jays 2 at Toronto (day game):
A homer by Oscar Gamble and run-scoring singles by Alan Bannister and Richie Zisk carried the White Sox to a 3-2 victory over the Blue Jays. Gamble, who came from the Yankees in Bucky Dent deal, hit his homer in the fourth inning. Bannister, who took over at shortstop with the departure of Dent, drove in a run with a single in the fifth, stole second and scored on Zisk's single.
Mets 8, Cubs 6 at Chicago (day game):
A pinch-double by Joe Torre in the ninth inning scored Bruce Boisclair and Dave Kingman and lifted the Mets to an 8-6 victory over the Cubs. Kingman singled for one of the Mets' two runs in the first inning and both Kingman and Roy Staiger homered with a man on base in the third. However, the Mets were unable to hold the 6-0 lead. After the Cubs rallied to tie the score, Felix Millan collected his fourth hit, a single, to open the ninth but was forced by Boisclair. Kingman singled for his third hit and Torre followed with his game-winning double. Bobby Murcer had a homer for the Cubs, his first in a Chicago uniform.
Padres 6, Reds 3 at Cincinnati (day game):
A three-run uprising in the ninth inning, featuring a triple by Mike Ivie, provided the Padres with a 6-3 victory over the Reds. Dave Winfield led off the stanza with a single and was forced by George Hendrick. Gene Tenace followed with a single and Ivie then blasted his triple for two runs to break a 3-3 tie. One out later, Bill Almon singled home Ivie to wrap up the scoring.
Astros 2, Braves 0 at Houston (night game):
Joaquin Andujar pitched a three-hitter and also batted in one of the Astros' runs in a 2-0 victory over the Braves. In the second inning, Bob Watson doubled and scored on a single by Joe Ferguson. After a walk to Roger Metzger with two out, Andujar gave himself more elbow room with a single that sent Ferguson across the plate.
Dodgers 8, Giants 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
Davey Lopes, Bill Russell and Ron Cey each collected a double and two singles as the Dodgers piled up 14 hits to defeat the Giants, 8-2.
Expos 4, Phillies 3 at Philadelphia (day game):
The Expos shocked the crowd of 43,367 at the Philadelphia opener by smashing three homers in one inning to defeat the Phillies. 4-3. Greg Luzinski batted in the Phils' runs with a bases-loaded double in the third inning. Dave Cash, appearing against his former club, singled for the Expos in the sixth and, with one out, Ellis Valentine and Tony Perez hit back-to-back homers to tie the score. One out later, Gary Carter also connected off Steve Carlton for the Expos' winning run.
Cardinals 8, Pirates 2 at Pittsburgh (day game):
As in their opening 12-6 victory, the Cardinals stepped off with four runs in the first inning and beat the Pirates for the second straight time. 8-2. A triple by Lou Brock and double by Ted Simmons punctuated the Cards' fast start. Bake McBride homered in the second inning and Keith Hernandez hit for the circuit in the seventh. The Pirates had a homer by Phil Garner, his first in the N. L.
