Today's scores and summaries:

Royals 5, Yankees 4 at Kansas City (night game):
The Royals edged the Yankees, 5-4, in 13 innings in the first rematch of the 1976 American League playoff rivals. Fred Patek walked to start the last of the 13th, advanced on Frank White's sacrifice and scored when John Mayberry bounced a single off the right field wall. Four innings of hitless relief made Mark Littell the winning pitcher before 39,460.

A's 3, Angels 2 at Oakland (night game):
Nolan Ryan walked Mitchell Page with the bases full in the ninth inning to enable the Athletics to defeat the Angels, 3-2. The winning pitcher was Pablo Torrealba, who faced one man in the ninth and retired the side on a double play.

Twins 12, Mariners 3 at Seattle (night game):
The Twins scored four runs in the fifth, when Rod Carew delivered a two-run triple, and rolled to a 12-3 triumph over the Mariners. Juan Bernhardt and Ruppert Jones each hit their second homers of the season for the Mariners. Larry Hisle hit his second homer, a two-run blow in the ninth, to cap the Twins' scoring.

Rangers 3, Indians 2 at Texas (night game):
The Rangers defeated the Indians, 3-2, in their home opener on Toby Harrah's home run with one out in the 10th inning. The crowd of 25,208 saw the Rangers post their fourth victory in succession.

Blue Jays 5, Tigers 3 at Toronto (day game):
A balk by rookie Dave Rozema, with runners at first and third in the seventh inning, triggered a four-run uprising that carried the Blue Jays to a 5-3 victory over the Tigers. Trailing, 3-1, the Blue Jays began their comeback on singles by Al Woods and Dave McKay. The balk was called when Rozema dropped the ball while preparing to pitch to Alan Ashby.

Astros 4, Reds 3 at Houston (night game):
The Astros struck for four runs in the first inning, two coming on Cliff Johnson's homer, then held off the Reds, 4-3. Ken Griffey had two hits, including a homer in the sixth, after going 0-for-15 in the Reds' first four games.

Braves 7, Dodgers 6 at Los Angeles (night game):
The Braves pushed across two runs in the ninth inning when Mike Marshall beat out an infield hit and Pat Rockett bounced into a double play, and that proved to be enough to defeat the Dodgers, 7-6.

Cubs 6, Phillies 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
The upstart Cubs dealt the Phillies their third loss in succession, 6-2, behind the seven-hit pitching of Bill Bonham. Bobby Murcer's second homer of the season, a solo blast in the sixth, proved to be decisive for the Cubs.
