Today's scores and summaries:

White Sox 7, Red Sox 3 at Chicago (day game):
Homers by Richie Zisk and Jim Essian powered the White Sox to a 7-3 victory over the winless Red Sox, who went down to their fourth straight defeat. Essian, playing in his 101st game, hit his first major league homer in the third inning. Zisk connected after singles by Ralph Garr and Essian in the seventh. Bart Johnson, the White Sox winner, broke a personal eight-game losing streak dating back to last season.

Yankees 5, Royals 3 at Kansas City (night game):
A two-out double by Bucky Dent in the eighth inning scored Willie Randolph from first base and broke a 3-3 tie as the Yankees defeated the previously unbeaten Royals, 5-3. The RBI was the second of the game for Dent, who previously singled to plate Randolph in the fourth. Randolph and Mickey Rivers each collected three hits. The Yankees picked up an insurance run in the ninth when Thurman Munson crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Ron Guidry, in relief of Ed Figueroa, received credit for his first major league victory.

A's 9, Angels 3 at Oakland (day game):
Continuing a hot streak, Mitchell Page smashed his first two major league homers, plus a double, and drove in six runs as the Athletics defeated the Angels, 9-3. With his splurge, the rookie outfielder boasted 12 hits in his first 24 times at bat. Page started his slugging with a three-run homer in the third inning, added a solo shot in the seventh and doubled for two more RBIs in the eighth.

Mariners 3, Twins 2 at Seattle (night game):
After escaping defeat in the ninth inning, the Mariners combined two singles and a balk for a run in the 13th to edge the Twins, 3-2. The Twins took a 2-1 lead in the top half of the ninth when Mike Cubbage singled and Butch Wynegar homered. In the home half, Ruppert Jones tripled but was thrown out trying to score on a grounder by Bill Stein. Jose Baez ran for Stein and counted the tying run on singles by Dan Meyer and Tommy Smith. In the 13th, Larry Milbourne singled, took second on a balk by Tom Burgmeier and scored the winning run on a single by Steve Braun.

Indians 5, Rangers 3 at Texas (night game):
Rick Manning, Duane Kuiper and Rico Carty collected seven hits among them and led the Indians to a 5-3 victory over the Rangers, who suffered their first defeat of the season after winning four games. Dennis Eckersley shut out the Rangers until the ninth inning when Toby Harrah homered with two men on base.

Blue Jays 7, Tigers 6 at Toronto (day game):
The Tigers committed five errors, including three in one inning by shortstop Mark Wagner, while losing to the Blue Jays, 7-6. Doug Ault opened the Jays' sixth with a homer to tie the score at 4-4. Gary Woods was safe on a fumble by Wagner, stole second and scored when the shortstop missed the throw from catcher Milt May. Steve Bowling reached first on Wagner's third error of the inning. After a single by Alan Ashby and walk to Al Woods, two more runs counted on a wild throw by Tito Fuentes and pass to Otto Velez with the bases loaded. Jason Thompson homered with two men on base and Ben Oglivie with one aboard for the Tigers.

Astros 7, Reds 6 at Houston (night game):
The Reds, continuing to play like chumps instead of champions, failed to hold a 6-0 lead and lost to the Astros, 7-6, for their fifth straight defeat. The Astros, who swept the three-game series, began their comeback with two runs in the fourth inning and tied the score with four more in the sixth on a walk and five singles. With two out in the ninth, Jose Cruz doubled. The Reds then walked Bob Watson intentionally, but Willie Crawford singled for his third hit in four times at bat to drive in the winning run.

Dodgers 4, Braves 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
Rick Monday hit his first homer in a Los Angeles uniform to provide the Dodgers with a 4-3 victory over the Braves. The Dodgers fell behind, 3-2, in the sixth inning when Vic Correll homered for the Braves, but Ron Cey tied the score with a circuit clout in the Dodgers' half before Monday decided the outcome with his round-tripper in the eighth.

Cardinals 7, Mets 3 at New York (day game):
Keith Hernandez, who hit only seven homers in 129 games with the Cardinals in 1976, already had three to his credit after connecting for the circuit in a 7-3 victory over the Mets. Ted Simmons homered for the Redbirds with a man on base in the third inning before Hernandez rapped a two-run blow in the fifth.

Cubs 3, Phillies 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
A homer by George Mitterwald in the seventh inning snapped a scoreless duel and started the Cubs off to a 3-1 victory over the Phillies. After Mitterwald's blow, the Cubs scored an additional run in the seventh on an infield hit by Ivan DeJesus and double by Jose Cardenal. The Phillies picked up an unearned run in their half on a two-base error by Steve Ontiveros and single by Jay Johnstone, but the Cubs tacked on an insurance tally in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Bobby Murcer.

Pirates 3, Expos 0 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Bruce Kison yielded only two hits and pitched the Pirates to a 3-0 victory over the Expos. All three Pirate runs were unearned. Steve Rogers, who was the loser, made two errors and was the victim of three more Montreal miscues.

Giants 3, Padres 1 at San Diego (night game):
Three-hit pitching by John Montefusco and a homer by Bill Madlock, his first with the Giants, featured a 3-1 victory over the Padres. After Madlock rapped his round-tripper in the fourth inning, the Padres tied the score in the fifth with a double by Doug Rader and single by Rick Sawyer. The Giants broke away with two runs in the sixth on singles by Madlock and Darrell Evans, a sacrifice fly by Willie McCovey and single by Johnnie LeMaster.
