Today's scores and summaries:

Brewers 5, Orioles 0 at Milwaukee (day game):
Jim Slaton, who had been held back by the flu, made his first appearance of the season, allowed only three hits and pitched the Brewers to a 5-0 victory over the Orioles. Cecil Cooper had three singles in three official trips for the Brewers and scored two of their runs.

A's 8, Angels 7 at Oakland (day game):
An error by Bobby Grich on a relay from the outfield in the ninth inning enabled the Athletics to defeat the Angels, 8-7. Dick Allen, Mitchell Page and Rich McKinney hit homers for the surprising A's, who gained their sixth victory in seven games. With the score tied in the ninth, Larry Lintz walked and moved up on a sacrifice by Matt Alexander. After a pass to Page, Allen hit a long fly to Bruce Bochte in center field. Lintz tagged up, advanced to third after the catch and continued home when Grich bobbled the throw from Bochte.

Mariners 4, Twins 3 at Seattle (day game):
A homer by Ruppert Jones after a pass to Dave Collins in the eighth inning carried the Mariners to a 4-3 victory over the Twins. Lyman Bostock batted in the Twins' tallies with a homer in the fifth and bases-loaded single in the ninth, but John Montague then stifled the rally when Larry Hisle lined into a double play and Mike Cubbage grounded out.

Blue Jays 5, Tigers 3 at Toronto (day game):
Pinch-hitter Otto Velez came through with a three-run homer in the eighth inning to lift the Blue Jays to a 5-3 victory over the Tigers. John Hiller, taking over in relief for Ray Bare, retired Jim Mason but then walked Doug Ault and Ron Fairly before Velez batted for Sam Ewing and hit his homer. The blow wiped out a 3-2 lead that the Tigers had achieved on round-trippers by John Wockenfuss and Ron LeFlore.

Cardinals 4, Mets 1 at New York (day game):
Rookie righthander John Urrea pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief and gained his second save of the young season as the Cardinals defeated the Mets, 4-1. In a total of five innings in his two relief appearances, Urrea had yielded only two infield hits and boasted a perfect 0.00 earned run average. The Cardinals, in gaining their fifth victory in six games, knocked off the Mets with three runs in the third inning, two scoring on a triple by Tony Scott.

Giants 8, Padres 4 at San Diego (day game):
Bill Madlock and Willie McCovey each hit a homer and single, driving in three runs apiece, to power the Giants to an 8-4 victory over the Padres. Jim Barr pitched the route for the Giants and struck out 11 for his career high. Jerry Turner and Merv Rettenmund homered for the Padres.
