Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 6, Mariners 4 at California (night game):
Back-to-back homers by Bobby Bonds and Don Baylor in the third inning highlighted the Angels' 6-4 victory over the Mariners. After those blows tied the score at 3-3, the Angels went ahead to stay when Dave Chalk singled and Jerry Remy doubled for a run in the fourth. Chalk, who collected three hits, singled to add a tally in the fifth and the Angels wrapped up their scoring in the sixth on Remy's second double of the game and a single by Bonds.

White Sox 3, Blue Jays 2 at Chicago (day game):
A pass to Jerry Hairston with the bases loaded in the ninth inning handed the White Sox a 3-2 victory over the Blue Jays and extended their winning streak to four games. Steve Stone held the Jays to three hits, but Bob Bailor tied the score with a homer in the eighth. An error by Pete Vuckovich, pitching in relief for Toronto, enabled Jim Spencer to reach base in the ninth. Oscar Gamble bunted into a forceout, but Eric Soderholm beat out an infield hit. Chet Lemon walked to load the bases and Hairston then drew a pass, forcing in Gamble.

Red Sox 8, Indians 4 at Cleveland (day game):
Wayne Garland's debut with Cleveland was wrecked by the Red Sox, who defeated the Indians, 8-4, for their first victory of the season after four losses. Jim Rice started Garland's downfall with a two-run triple in the first inning. The Red Sox added a pair, one on a double by Carl Yastrzemski, and chased Garland in the fifth. Yastrzemski and Dwight Evans hit homers off reliever Tom Buskey in the seventh, Yaz's blow coming with Rice on base.

Tigers 8, Royals 5 at Kansas City (night game):
With two out in the ninth inning, Rusty Staub smashed a three-run homer to bring the Tigers an 8-5 victory over the Royals. The Tigers took a 5-4 lead in the seventh when Steve Kemp hit for the circuit with a man on base, but the Royals tied the score in their half when Hal McRae reached second on an error by Aurelio Rodriguez and John Mayberry singled. In the ninth, Tom Veryzer led off with a double but the next two batters went out before Steve Kemp drew a walk and Staub stunned the Royals' crowd of 23,753 by hitting his homer.

Brewers 4, Yankees 3 at Milwaukee (day game):
Sparky Lyle failed in relief as the Brewers rallied for three runs in the ninth inning, including a homer by Cecil Cooper, to defeat the Yankees, 4-3. Jim Wohlford opened the stanza with a single off Ken Holtzman, who was lifted although the hit was only the fifth of his deliveries. Lyle induced Robin Yount to force Wohlford, but Cooper came up and smashed his homer to tie the score at 3-3. Sal Bando followed with a triple and, after an intentional pass to Sixto Lezcano, Don Money struck out but Steve Brye singled for the winning run.

Twins 3, A's 1 at Minnesota (day game):
Two wild pitches spoiled Vida Blue's first start of the season and enabled the Twins to defeat the Athletics, 3-1. Geoff Zahn pitched a four-hitter for the Twins. Craig Kusick doubled in the second inning and scored when Blue bounced a pitch off the plate. After Dan Ford walked in the fifth, another wild pitch moved the runner to second in position to score on a single by Kusick.

Braves 4, Astros 3 at Atlanta (night game):
Gary Matthews and Pat Rockett, both on hot hitting streaks, batted the Braves to a 4-3 victory over the Astros. Rockett, who had three hits in four trips, drove in the first two runs with a single in the second inning. Matthews, who had three hits in as many official trips, batted in the other pair with a single in the seventh after the Braves loaded the bases on three walks.

Expos 4, Phillies 3 at Montreal (day game):
A homer by Gary Carter in the sixth inning provided the Expos with their winning run in a 4-3 victory over the Phillies. Singles by Tony Perez and Larry Parrish accounted for two runs in the first and Tim Foli drove in Dave Cash with a triple in the second to make it 3-1 in favor of the Expos. Mike Schmidt homered for the Phillies in the fourth, but Carter's clout enabled the Expos to brush off the run scored by the Phillies on a wild pitch in the seventh.

Mets 4, Cubs 1 at New York (day game):
After being held to one hit in the first six innings, the Mets erupted for four runs in the seventh and defeated the Cubs, 4-1. Felix Millan was safe on an error to start the stanza and scored on singles by Bruce Boisclair and Dave Kingman. Another single by Ed Kranepool put the Mets ahead, 2-1. Rick Reuschel walked Roy Staiger to load the bases before yielding the mound to Willie Hernandez. Jerry Grote then hit a sharp grounder that bounced over the head of shortstop Ivan DeJesus for a single, driving in the final two tallies.

Padres 5, Reds 4 at San Diego (night game):
Singles by George Hendrick and Gene Tenace and a double by Dave Roberts produced a run in the ninth inning and gave the Padres a 5-4 victory over the Reds. Doug Rader homered for the Padres in the second, but the Reds went ahead, 4-1, when Joe Morgan hit for the circuit with two men on base in the third. The Padres rallied to tie the score in the seventh on a single by Jerry Turner, pass to Bill Almon, triple by Dave Winfield and sacrifice fly by Tenace.

Dodgers 5, Giants 0 at San Francisco (day game):
Reggie Smith smashed his third homer in two days to start the Dodgers off to a 5-0 victory over the Giants behind the hurling of Burt Hooton, who allowed only five hits.

Pirates 3, Cardinals 1 at St. Louis (day game):
The Pirates were meek victims of Eric Rasmussen for six innings before rising up to score two runs in the seventh and defeat the Cardinals, 3-1. Rasmussen had retired 12 straight batters going into the seventh when Dave Parker snapped his string with a single. Parker then stole second and scored on a double by Bill Robinson. Rennie Stennett followed with a single to plate Robinson. Rich Gossage, who pitched the last three innings in relief of John Candelaria, added the Pirates' last run with a double in the ninth for his first major league hit.
