Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 7, Indians 2 at Baltimore (night game):
The Orioles knocked out Wayne Garland, their former teammate, and defeated the Indians, 7-2, for their fifth straight victory. Garland was tagged for a homer by Doug DeCinces with a man on base in the first inning. After yielding another run in the third, Garland departed in the fourth in favor of Don Hood, who walked Al Bumbry with the bases loaded to force in a run charged against Garland. Bumbry added an RBI with a single in the sixth and Eddie Murray wound up the Orioles' scoring by hitting a homer with a man on base in the seventh.

Tigers 3, Red Sox 2 at Boston (night game):
Vern Ruhle beat the Red Sox twice in 1974, his rookie season, but lost to them five straight times since then before coming out a winner when the Tigers posted a 3-2 victory. Jim Rice homered for the Red Sox in the first inning, but the Tigers came back against Luis Tiant with a double by Milt May and single by Aurelio Rodriguez in the second. Rusty Staub broke the tie with a homer in the third and Steve Kemp provided the winning blow with a circuit clout in the sixth.

White Sox 3, Angels 2 at California (night game):
Eric Soderholm, who rapped two singles, driving in one run and scoring another, followed by smashing a homer in the fifth inning to carry the White Sox to a 3-2 victory over the Angels. Nolan Ryan, who pitched for the Angels, had control trouble, walking seven. In the second inning, a pass to Jim Spencer set up the first run for the White Sox on a single by Soderholm. Ralph Garr walked with the bases loaded to force in Soderholm in the fourth. Chris Knapp, who started for the White Sox, also passed seven but emerged as the winner with relief help from Lerrin LaGrow.

Twins 3, Royals 2 at Kansas City (night game):
Solo homers by Larry Hisle, Dan Ford and Craig Kusick, plus a club record-tying five double plays, carried the Twins to a 3-2 victory over the Royals. Hisle and Ford hit their homers consecutively in the third inning. After the Royals came back to tie the score, Kusick connected with two out in the eighth to provide the Twins' winning run.

Yankees 7, Blue Jays 5 at New York (day game):
Drawing their batting order out of a cap, the Yankees ended a five-game losing streak by defeating the Blue Jays, 7-5. Don Gullett, with relief help from Sparky Lyle in the eighth inning, gained his first A. L. victory. Manager Billy Martin put slips of paper with players' names in his cap and Reggie Jackson drew them out to determine the Yankees' batting lineup. Willie Randolph, who wound up in the leadoff spot, rapped three hits, including his second major league homer, as the Yankees piled up 14 hits, their most for any game so far this season.

A's 4, Brewers 2 at Oakland (day game):
Mike Torrez posted his third straight victory with a six-hitter as the Athletics ended their three-game losing streak by defeating the Brewers, 4-2. Rich McKinney drove in two of the A's runs to help turn back the Brewers, who were stopped on a five-game winning streak. Two walks, an error and single by McKinney produced the A's initial pair in the first inning. After the Brewers pulled even, McKinney broke the tie with a homer in the sixth.

Rangers 5, Mariners 2 at Seattle (night game):
Nelson Briles and Adrian Devine combined on a four-hitter as the Rangers defeated the Mariners, 5-2, with the aid of homers by Dave May and Toby Harrah. May connected with a man on base in the third inning and Harrah added a solo swat in the sixth. Juan Bernhardt drove in both of the Mariners' runs with a homer and single.

Braves 2, Padres 0 at Atlanta (night game):
Jeff Burroughs hit his fifth homer of the season, while Andy Messersmith and Rick Camp combined in pitching a shutout, as the Braves defeated the Padres, 2-0. After Burroughs belted his homer off Randy Jones in the fourth inning, the Braves added an insurance marker in the sixth on a double by Gary Matthews and single by Rod Gilbreath. Messersmith left the mound after suffering a muscle cramp while warming up prior to the eighth inning.

Dodgers 3, Reds 1 at Cincinnati (day game):
The Dodgers extended their winning streak to seven games with a 3-1 victory over the Reds behind the pitching of Don Sutton, who beat the Cincy crew for the first time since July, 1975. Sutton was 0-4 against the Reds last season. Davey Lopes led off the game with a homer against Fred Norman. After the Reds tied the score in the fifth inning when Cesar Geronimo singled and Ken Griffey doubled, Ron Cey provided the Dodgers' winning margin by hitting for the circuit with a man on base in the sixth.

Giants 1, Astros 0 at Houston (night game):
A run-scoring single by Rob Andrews in the eighth inning enabled the Giants to edge the Astros, 1-0, behind the pitching of Ed Halicki and two relievers. Terry Whitfield singled as the pinch-hitter for Halicki in the eighth, took second on a sacrifice by Derrel Thomas and crossed the plate on Andrews' hit.

Pirates 8, Expos 6 at Montreal (day game):
Gary Carter became the first player in Expos' history to hit three homers in one game, but the catcher's blows failed to prevent an 8-6 loss to the Pirates. Carter hit solo swats in the second and fifth innings and then capped his slugging show with a two-run smash in the seventh, all three homers coming off Jim Rooker. Tony Perez accounted for the Expos' two other runs with a round-tripper in the eighth. The Pirates' attack included homers by Phil Garner and Dave Parker, each with a man on base.

Cardinals 4, Mets 2 at St. Louis (day game):
Ted Simmons homered with two men on base and drove in another run with a single to account for all of the Cardinals' scoring in a 4-2 victory over the Mets. Eric Rasmussen was deprived of a shutout when Bruce Boisclair produced the Mets' runs with a round-tripper in the ninth inning.
