Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 7, Brewers 4 at California (night game):
Pitching seven innings, Wayne Simpson gained his first major league victory since winning with the Phillies in September, 1975, when the Angels defeated the Brewers, 7-4. Jerry Remy and Joe Rudi drove in two runs apiece for the Angels. Jamie Quirk hit a homer, double and single for the Brewers.

White Sox 8, A's 2 at Oakland (night game):
The White Sox fired a barrage of four homers against Vida Blue and defeated the Athletics, 8-2. Richie Zisk hit two homers, as well as a double and single, and drove in four runs. Jim Spencer and Lamar Johnson each connected for the circuit with a man on base. Francisco Barrios, a last-minute starter for the White Sox, hurled the route and allowed only four hits. Both of the A's runs were unearned, scoring on a single by Sheldon Mallory for his first major league RBIs.

Royals 6, Mariners 5 at Seattle (night game):
The Mariners, playing in only their 16th game, pulled off the first triple play in the major leagues this season and also had a triple by Juan Bernhardt with the bases loaded, but nevertheless lost to the Royals, 6-5. The Royals had John Mayberry at third and Amos Otis at first in the fourth inning when Darrell Porter grounded sharply to Mariner shortstop Craig Reynolds, who stepped on second, forcing Otis, and threw to first to retire Porter. Mayberry made a delayed attempt to score and was thrown out at the plate on first baseman Dan Meyer's relay to catcher Skip Jutze. After the Mariners took a 5-4 lead on Bernhardt's triple in the eighth, the Royals rallied to win with two out in the ninth when Fred Patek and Pete LaCock singled and George Brett drove them across the plate with a double.

Twins 4, Rangers 1 at Texas (night game):
Homers by Roy Smalley, Lyman Bostock and Butch Wynegar accounted for all of the Twins' scoring in a 4-1 victory over the Rangers. Smalley led off the game with his round-tripper. After the Rangers tied the score, Smalley singled in the eighth and Bostock, who had struck out three straight times, followed with his homer off Bert Blyleven. One out later, Wynegar also hit for the circuit.

Braves 6, Dodgers 5 at Atlanta (night game):
Run-scoring singles by Joe Nolan and Craig Robinson in the ninth inning carried the Braves to a 6-5 victory over the Dodgers, who were stopped on their seven-game winning streak. Pinch-hitter Boog Powell drove in two runs with a single in the sixth inning for his first N. L. hit to give the Dodgers a 4-3 lead. In the Braves' ninth, Jerry Royster walked and Willie Montanez singled. Jeff Burroughs grounded into a forceout, but Nolan delivered a pinch-single to tie the score and Robinson ended the game with his winning hit.

Padres 4, Astros 2 at Houston (night game):
Bob Shirley turned in a tremendous pitching performance before weakening in the ninth inning, but the rookie lefthander emerged with the victory when the Padres defeated the Astros, 4-2. Shirley gave up a single to Julio Gonzalez, the Astros' leadoff batter in the game, but then retired 25 consecutive batters before Cliff Johnson, pinch-hitting for the Astros, homered with one out in the ninth. Shirley retired Gonzalez, but when Enos Cabell also homered, Rollie Fingers took over and put down the last batter. Jerry Turner provided the Padres' winning margin with a two-run homer in the seventh inning.

Expos 3, Giants 2 at Montreal (day game):
An infield hit by Andre Dawson with two out and the bases loaded in the 10th inning scored Tony Perez and gave the Expos a 3-2 victory over the Giants. Willie McCovey forced the game into overtime by accounting for the Giants' runs with a homer in the ninth. Ellis Valentine doubled in the Expos' 10th and Perez was passed intentionally. Larry Parrish forced Valentine at third. After Jose Morales grounded out, moving the runners along, the Giants passed Gary Carter to load the bases. Dawson followed with the winning hit on a slow roller to second baseman Rob Andrews, who was unable to make the play on an infield that had been made slick by two downpours during the game.

Pirates 4, Mets 3 at New York (night game):
Tom Seaver extended his scoreless pitching streak to 25 innings before being knocked out by the Pirates, who went on to edge the Mets, 4-3. Seaver, who had hurled two previous shutouts, collared the Pirates until the eighth when the Mets' ace gave up three runs on a single by Omar Moreno, a stolen base, single by Ed Ott and homer by Dave Parker. Bob Myrick, on the Mets' mound in relief, gave up a single by Phil Garner to open the ninth before giving way to Skip Lockwood. Frank Taveras sacrificed. Lockwood walked Ed Kirkpatrick and then struck out Moreno, but Ott came through with a single to drive in the Pirates' winning run.

Cardinals 10, Phillies 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
Keith Hernandez drove in five runs with a homer, triple and single to lead the Cardinals in a 10-1 bombardment of the Phillies. Ted Simmons also had three hits and boosted his batting average to .412. John Denny went eight innings and gained his fourth straight victory.
