Today's scores and summaries:

Brewers 4, Angels 1 at California (night game):
Run-scoring triples by Don Money and Jim Wohlford led the Brewers to a 4-1 victory before an Angels' Bat Night crowd of 42,368. After sending a run home in the fourth inning, Money counted himself on an error. Wohlford's triple in the seventh batted in Jamie Quirk, who had singled.

Yankees 9, Indians 3 at Cleveland (day game):
Playing in rainy, 40-degree weather, the Yankees parlayed four singles and three errors for six runs in the third inning and defeated the Indians, 9-3, in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader. The second game was postponed. Thurman Munson drove in a run with an infield out and Graig Nettles accounted for two with a single in the big inning.

A's 3, White Sox 2 at Oakland (day game):
A wild throw by catcher Wayne Nordhagen, attempting to cut off a base thief, enabled the Athletics to score the deciding run in a 3-2 victory over the White Sox. Manny Sanguillen drove in the A's first run with a single in the sixth inning and accounted for the second marker with another single in the eighth. After taking second base on the throw to the plate, Sanguillen gave way to pinch-runner Matt Alexander, who stole third and came home on Nordhagen's error.

Royals 8, Mariners 6 at Seattle (day game):
The Royals scored six unearned runs and defeated the Mariners, 8-6, as Dennis Leonard, a winner of 17 games last season, chalked up his first victory of the season in his third appearance. Four of the Mariners' tallies also were tainted. Hal McRae and Fred Patek each drove in a pair with a double in the fifth inning when the Royals scored five unearned runs off Stan Thomas. After the Mariners tied the score, McRae accounted for his third RBI of the game with a single in the seventh.

Rangers 1, Twins 0 at Texas (night game):
Willie Horton's first homer in a Texas uniform carried the Rangers to a 1-0 victory over the Twins. Doyle Alexander was the winner on a five-hitter, while Dave Goltz drew the defeat although yielding only three hits.

Dodgers 6, Braves 4 at Atlanta (night game):
Ron Cey hit a three-run homer and accounted for another RBI with a sacrifice fly as the Dodgers defeated the Braves, 6-4. After Cey's smash in the third inning, Rick Monday also hit for the circuit to give the Dodgers a 4-0 lead. The Braves rallied to tie the score, but the Dodgers broke the deadlock in the ninth with a run on singles by Davey Lopes, Bill Russell and Reggie Smith before Cey ended the scoring with his sacrifice fly.

Cubs 2, Reds 1 at Chicago (day game):
The relief work of Bruce Sutter in the ninth inning saved a victory for Bill Bonham as the Cubs defeated the Reds, 2-1. The Cubs scored their initial run in the fourth on a pass to Bobby Murcer and double by Jerry Morales. The Reds had scored in the third on a walk to Cesar Geronimo, a sacrifice and single by Pete Rose, but the Cubs picked up their deciding marker in the sixth with singles by Bill Buckner, Morales and Manny Trillo. In the ninth, after George Foster singled off Bonham, Sutter came in and retired the side by striking out Dan Driessen and Johnny Bench and getting Geronimo on a grounder.

[DH] Padres 7, Astros 2 (day game) / Padres 11, Astros 8 at Houston (night game):
The Padres swept a twi-night doubleheader, 7-2 and 11-8, to extend the Astros' losing streak to eight games. The Padres decided the opener with four runs in the sixth inning on singles by Dave Winfield and George Hendrick, a triple by Gene Tenace and doubles by Mike Ivie and Doug Rader. In the nightcap, the Astros appeared on the way to ending their losing streak when they scored six runs in the third inning, knocking out Butch Metzger, who made his first start in the majors after 96 relief appearances. However, the Padres came back to win with the aid of five unearned runs. Vic Bernal, who pitched four scoreless stanzas in relief, gained credit for his first major league victory.

Giants 4, Expos 2 at Montreal (day game):
The Giants crammed all their scoring in the first three innings, including a homer by Gary Thomasson, and defeated the Expos, 4-2. Derrel Thomas walked, stole second and scored on a single by Bill Madlock before Willie McCovey doubled for another run in the first inning. Thomasson hit his homer in the second and Darrell Evans singled to drive in what proved to be an insurance marker in the third.

Pirates 6, Mets 5 at New York (day game):
Al Oliver's fourth hit of the game drove in Omar Moreno with two out in the ninth inning and provided the Pirates with a 6-5 victory over the Mets. Moreno led off the stanza with a triple off Ray Sadecki, who retired the next two batters before Oliver rapped a single.

Phillies 11, Cardinals 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
In a turnabout after a 10-1 defeat in the previous night's game, the Phillies walloped the Cardinals, 11-1. Greg Luzinski drove in four runs with two doubles and a homer.
