Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 9, A's 2 at Baltimore (night game):
A grand slam by Lee May during a first-inning outburst started the Orioles off to a 9-2 victory over the Athletics. Al Bumbry doubled and Mark Belanger and Ken Singleton walked ahead of May's homer off Dock Ellis. The Orioles added another run and kayoed Ellis before the inning ended.

Red Sox 5, Mariners 2 at Boston (night game):
Jim Rice hit a triple and homer and Carl Yastrzemski drove in two runs, one with a safe bunt, to lead the Red Sox to a 5-2 victory over the Mariners. Denny Doyle doubled in the first inning and, after advancing to third on an infield out, scored the first run for the Red Sox on Yaz' bunt. Rice tripled and counted on a single by Yastrzemski in the third before hitting his homer in the seventh.

Indians 6, Twins 5 at Cleveland (day game):
A walk to Fred Kendall and singles by Duane Kuiper and Buddy Bell in the seventh inning gave the Indians a 6-5 victory over the Twins. Johnny Grubb and Rico Carty each batted in two of the Indians' earlier tallies. The Twins had homers by Larry Hisle and Rod Carew, Hisle's blow coming with two men on base.

White Sox 6, Royals 3 at Kansas City (night game):
Chet Lemon hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning to put the White Sox ahead and Oscar Gamble followed with another two-run homer in the ninth to nail down a 6-3 victory over the Royals.

Blue Jays 10, Brewers 3 at Toronto (night game):
Consecutive homers by Dave McKay and Hector Torres in the seventh inning climaxed the Blue Jays' attack in a 10-3 victory over the Brewers. Gary Woods beat out an infield hit before McKay and Torres followed with their back-to-back blows. Bill Singer gained his first victory in a Toronto uniform after losing four times.

Pirates 8, Braves 0 at Atlanta (night game):
Hitting a pair of doubles, Dave Parker drove in the Pirates' first four runs in an 8-0 victory over the Braves, who went down to their 11th straight defeat. A single by Oamr Moreno and walk to Ed Ott preceded Parker's first double at the start of the game. Larry Demery tripled and Ott walked again in the second before Parker hit his second double. Parker then scored on a single by Al Oliver.

Astros 5, Cubs 4 at Chicago (day game):
Julio Gonzalez batted in the tying run with a single in the ninth inning and the winning run with another single in the 11th as the Astros defeated the Cubs, 5-4. The Cubs took a 4-0 lead before Bob Watson hit a three-run homer for the Astros in the eighth. Art Howe walked in the ninth and gave way to Wilbur Howard, who stole second and scored on a single by Gonzalez. In the 11th, Joe Ferguson walked and Howard sacrificed. Ken Boswell was safe on an error by Manny Trillo. Ferguson was out trying to score on a grounder by Enos Cabell, but Boswell reached third on the play and crossed the plate on Gonzalez' single.

Cardinals 8, Reds 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
Lou Brock, Garry Templeton and Tony Scott smashed homers in a power display by the Cardinals, who defeated the Reds, 8-1, behind the four-hit hurling of Bob Forsch. Scott's homer was the first of his major league career. The Cards' outfielder also drove in two other runs with a single.

Dodgers 3, Mets 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
Tommy John scattered four hits and Dusty Baker belted his fourth homer of the season, matching the outfielder's entire 1976 total, as the Dodgers defeated the Mets, 3-1, for their 20th victory in 24 games. The Dodgers used their speed to produce the first two runs. Davey Lopes beat out a bunt, stole second and scored on a single by Bill Russell. Then, on a hit-and-run play, Russell raced home from first base on a single by Reggie Smith. The Mets avoided a shutout with a run in the ninth on a double by Lee Mazzilli and a pair of infield outs.

Padres 4, Phillies 1 at San Diego (night game):
Randy Jones pitched the first complete game to the credit of the Padres' staff this season and allowed only four hits while defeating the Phillies, 4-1. Jones threw only 95 pitches in a game that was completed in one hour, 29 minutes, setting a San Diego club record. The Padres' scoring in support of Jones included Gene Richards' first major league homer.

Giants 5, Expos 1 at San Francisco (day game):
Willie McCovey and Randy Elliott each drove in two runs as the Giants ended a five-game losing streak by defeating the Expos, 5-1. Jim Barr pitched a six-hitter. McCovey batted in his pair with a single in the first inning. Elliott accounted for his runs with singles in the third and eighth before Barr wrapped up the scoring with a single for the final tally.
