Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 5, Mariners 2 at Boston (night game):
Backed by a pair of two-run homers, Fergie Jenkins was able to pitch the Red Sox to a 5-2 victory over the Mariners. Jenkins gave up the Mariners' runs in the first inning on a double by Steve Braun and homer by Dan Meyer, but the veteran righthander was invincible the rest of the way while racking up his fourth straight victory. The Red Sox came back against Diego Segui in the sixth. Denny Doyle led off with a double and scored on a single by Carl Yastrzemski. George Scott followed with a homer for a 3-2 lead. Jim Rice added insurance with a homer in the eighth after Doyle was safe on an error.

Royals 6, White Sox 5 at Kansas City (night game):
George Brett cracked two doubles off his pitching brother, Ken Brett, to help the Royals defeat the White Sox, 6-5. Amos Otis and Al Cowens had homers for the Royals. After his first double in the fifth inning, Brett stole third and scored on a single by Hal McRae. With the game tied, 4-4, in the sixth, Joe Zdeb singled, Fred Patek was safe on an error and Buck Martinez singled to drive in Zdeb. Brett's second double then scored Patek with what proved to be the winning run.

A's 5, Yankees 2 at New York (night game):
Catfish Hunter made his first appearance since being injured on opening day and was the loser when the Athletics defeated the Yankees, 5-2. The A's piled up four runs before Hunter could settle down. In the first inning, Larry Murray singled and Mitchell Page homered. The A's followed with two more runs in the second on a pass to Earl Williams, double by Marty Perez and triple by Bill North.

Blue Jays 9, Brewers 8 at Toronto (night game):
A homer by Ron Fairly in the seventh inning lifted the Blue Jays to a 9-8 victory over the Brewers in a game that was delayed for one hour by heavy fog. While visibility was limited, the Brewers scored four runs in the fifth inning on a triple by Charlie Moore, single by Von Joshua, inside-the-park homer by Cecil Cooper, pass to Don Money and triple by Sixto Lezcano. The umpires then halted action until the fog lifted. The Blue Jays came back to take an 8-6 lead, but the Brewers tied the score in the eighth on RBIs by Sal Bando and Jamie Quirk before Fairly's homer decided the game in the Blue Jays' favor.

Cubs 8, Astros 7 at Chicago (day game):
After taking an 8-0 lead with the aid of three homers, the Cubs hung on to gain an 8-7 victory over the Astros, who also hit three homers in belated rallies. The Cubs scored four runs in the first inning, three coming on a homer by Manny Trillo. Jerry Morales accounted for three more with a circuit clout in the second before a round-tripper by George Mitterwald added what proved to be the winning run in the fifth. The Astros then fell short although Bob Watson homered with a man on base and Cliff Johnson with two aboard in the seventh and Joe Ferguson found the range with a man on base in the eighth.

Dodgers 7, Mets 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
Breaking out of a 1-for-25 slump. Ron Cey smashed a grand-slam homer off Tom Seaver in the fifth inning to climax a seven-run explosion that propelled the Dodgers to a 7-2 victory over the Mets. Rick Monday doubled and Dusty Baker homered to ignite the Dodgers' outburst. Johnny Oates singled, stole second and scored on a single by Rick Rhoden. Following a pass to Davey Lopes and infield out by Bill Russell, Seaver walked Reggie Smith intentionally to load the bases and had a count of 3-2 on Cey before the Dodgers' slugger unloaded. Rhoden, in boosting his record to 5-0, gave up the Mets' runs on a homer by John Milner in the eighth inning.

Phillies 8, Padres 5 at San Diego (night game):
A four-run outburst in the fourth inning started the Phillies on their way to an 8-5 victory over the Padres and made a winner out of Randy Lerch for the fourth time in five decisions. A walk and singles by Mike Schmidt and Greg Luzinski produced the Phils' first run. After a pass to Richie Hebner, Bob Boone forced Schmidt at the plate, but Gene Tenace's throw to first hit Boone in the back and bounced away as Luzinski scored. Jerry Martin singled to send the Phils ahead, 3-2, and Ted Sizemore hit a sacrifice fly for the fourth run. Schmidt iced the game for the Phillies by hitting a two-run homer in the ninth inning.

Expos 7, Giants 1 at San Francisco (day game):
Steve Rogers drove in two runs with a pair of singles while pitching the Expos to a 7-1 victory over the Giants.
