Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 4, Mariners 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Homers by Pat Kelly and Doug DeCinces on consecutive pitches in the second inning started the Orioles on their way to a 4-1 victory over the Mariners. The blows beat Glenn Abbott, who suffered his fourth straight loss, while Ross Grimsley was the winner on a five-hit performance.

Angels 8, Red Sox 4 at Boston (night game):
Fireballer Nolan Ryan struck out 15 batters in 8 2/3 innings before wildness forced his exit in favor of Paul Hartzell, who struck out George Scott with the bases loaded to wind up the Angels' 8-4 victory over the Red Sox. Ryan yielded six hits and walked seven. Bobby Grich hit a two-run homer for the Angels in the third. Bobby Bonds duplicated the blow in the sixth and accounted for another RBI with a single in the seventh. The Red Sox loaded the bases on three walks in the fourth and scored three runs on singles by Dwight Evans and Bernie Carbo. Ryan forced in another run with a pass in the ninth before Hartzell took over to pick up the save.

White Sox 7, Indians 5 at Cleveland (night game):
Richie Zisk, Jorge Orta and Jim Spencer drove in two runs apiece to bat the White Sox to a 7-5 victory over the Indians. Zisk accounted for his RBIs with his ninth homer of the season and a single. Johnny Grubb hit the first grand slam of his major league career in the fifth inning and Fred Kendall added a solo four-bagger in the ninth for the Indians' runs.

Tigers 5, Brewers 2 at Detroit (night game):
A homer by Ben Oglivie in the fifth inning provided the Tigers with their go-ahead run in a 5-2 victory over the Brewers. After a homer by Steve Brye and run-scoring single by Sal Bando gave the Brewers a 2-1 lead in the fifth, Tito Fuentes tripled and crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Rusty Staub before Oglivie rapped his homer to put the Tigers ahead to stay.

Yankees 4, A's 1 at New York (night game):
Roy White whacked a three-run homer in support of Ed Figueroa, who yielded only five hits and pitched the Yankees to a 4-1 victory over the Athletics. White's wallop in the fourth inning, after a pass to Reggie Jackson and single by Chris Chambliss, beat Doc Medich, who pitched against his former Yankee teammates for the first time.

Rangers 5, Royals 2 at Texas (night game):
Starting with homers by Willie Horton and Bump Wills in the second inning, the Rangers batted their way to a 5-2 victory over the Royals. Horton accounted for another RBI with a single in the fourth. The Royals scored in the seventh on homers by John Mayberry and Al Cowens, but Doyle Alexander yielded only four other hits in posting his fourth victory in five decisions.

Twins 7, Blue Jays 2 at Toronto (night game):
Geoff Zahn, who was signed as a free agent, pitched six innings before being replaced by Ron Schueler and gained credit for his fifth straight victory when the Twins defeated the Blue Jays, 7-2. Roy Smalley drove in three runs with a single and double and Larry Hisle hit his seventh homer of the season to pace the Twins' attack.

Cubs 7, Braves 2 at Chicago (day game):
Two-run homers by George Mitterwald and Bobby Murcer, plus a two-run triple by Steve Ontiveros, powered the Cubs to a 7-2 victory and handed the Braves their 12th straight defeat. Mike Krukow, who lasted 7 1/3 innings in the rookie's fifth start for the Cubs, gained credit for his first major league victory.

Dodgers 9, Phillies 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
Back-to-back homers by Reggie Smith and Ron Cey in the first inning started the Dodgers' scoring in a 9-3 victory over the Phillies. The Dodgers followed with a five-run outburst in the second, Cey and Steve Garvey batting in two apiece. Rick Monday hammered a homer with a man on base in the fifth to complete the Dodgers' support of Don Sutton, who gained his fourth straight victory.

Pirates 6, Reds 3 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The Pirates erupted for five runs in the fifth inning, two scoring on a single by John Candelaria, who helped himself to a 6-3 victory over the Reds. Dave Parker, who had three hits in five trips, including a single during the big inning, batted safely in his 17th straight game. Pete Rose, who stretched his hitting streak to 19 games for the Reds, led off in the seventh with a single, resulting in the exit of Candelaria. Rich Gossage gave up one hit the rest of the way.

Padres 6, Expos 4 at San Diego (night game):
Batting with the bases loaded, Mike Champion cleared the sacks with a double in the fourth inning for the Padres' big blow in a 6-4 victory over the Expos. Jerry Turner homered in the first for the Padres' initial run. Champion's double broke a 1-1 tie.

Giants 5, Mets 3 at San Francisco (night game):
Lynn McGlothen gained his first victory in a Giants' uniform when Marc Hill homered with two men on base in the fourth inning to beat the Mets, 5-3. John Stearns hit a three-run homer in the top of the fourth to put the Mets ahead, 3-1, but in the Giants' half, Willie McCovey and Larry Herndon singled before Hill connected for the circuit.

Cardinals 4, Astros 1 at St. Louis (night game):
Pete Falcone, who had lost seven straight games since last September 8, including three this season, returned to the victory column when the Cardinals defeated the Astros, 4-1. Falcone pitched seven shutout innings, allowing only two hits, before yielding to Al Hrabosky. In the ninth, Hrabosky hit Cesar Cedeno with a pitch, setting off a player brawl. Joaquin Andujar of the Astros and Roger Freed of the Cardinals, neither of them in the game, were ejected for overzealous participation in the melee.
