Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 5, Royals 3 at Kansas City (night game):
The Angels handed the Royals their fifth defeat in seven games, 5-3. Terry Humphrey hit his first home run of the season in the second inning and Joe Rudi had a run-scoring double in the eighth, bringing his runs batted in total to 29, high in the American League. The Angels scored what proved to be the deciding run in the fourth when Gil Flores was hit by a Jim Colborn pitch, stole second and tallied on Jerry Remy's single.

A's 2, Red Sox 1 at Oakland (night game):
Vida Blue spun a six-hitter to outduel Reggie Cleveland, and rookie Mitchell Page drove in two runs with a single in the first inning and triple in the fifth as the Athletics shaded the Red Sox, 2-1. Butch Hobson hit a homer in the third for the Red Sox.

White Sox 6, Rangers 3 at Texas (night game):
Jim Essian had a two-run double in the sixth inning that sent the White Sox on the way to a 6-3 decision over the Rangers and their sixth road victory in seven games. The decisive two-bagger followed a double by pinch-hitter Lamar Johnson and a walk to Chet Lemon.

Blue Jays 10, Mariners 4 at Toronto (night game):
The Blue Jays, with Doug Ault hitting a three-run homer in the fourth inning, belted the Mariners, 10-4, in the first meeting of the American League expansion clubs. Ault's sixth homer of the season tied the score, 3-3. and the Blue Jays went ahead to stay in the fifth on Bob Bailor's sacrifice fly and Al Woods' run-scoring single.

Cubs 6, Astros 1 at Houston (night game):
The Cubs turned singles by Manny Trillo and Larry Biittner, Greg Gross' sacrifice fly, three walks, a hit batsman and wild pitch into a four-run second inning that produced a 6-1 triumph over the Astros. Reliever Willie Hernandez worked three scoreless innings to preserve Rick Reuschel's fifth victory.

Cardinals 6, Reds 5 at St. Louis (night game):
A national television audience saw the Cardinals inflict the Reds' fifth defeat in a row, 6-5, on a leadoff homer by Ted Simmons in the home half of the 10th inning. Simmons' sixth homer made a winner of reliever Al Hrabosky, who struck out George Foster, Johnny Bench and pinch-hitter Bob Bailey with the bases filled in the ninth. Hrabosky also wiggled out of a jam in the 10th, when pinch-hitter Ray Knight singled and Ken Griffey doubled off the right field wall. Mike Anderson threw to Don Kessinger, whose relay to Simmons nailed Knight at the plate.
