The Angels erupted for consecutive homers by Bobby Bonds, Don Baylor and Ron Jackson in the second inning and breezed to a 6-0 victory over the Orioles behind the six-hit pitching of Frank Tanana. Ross Grimsley was the victim of the Angels' barrage, serving up the homers on just seven pitches. Rudi added a round-tripper in the eighth inning.
Indians 4, Brewers 3 at Cleveland (night game):
After four losses, Wayne Garland was able to post his first victory of the season when the Indians took advantage of three unearned runs and beat the Brewers, 4-3. The Indians scored three times on only one hit in the second inning, two of the tallies being tainted. With the score tied, 3-3, Frank Duffy singled in the eighth, stole second, continued to third on a throwing error by Charlie Moore and scored on a sacrifice fly by Paul Dade.
Tigers 8, Twins 3 at Detroit (night game):
The Tigers smashed four homers among their 12 hits and beat the Twins, 8-3, to end Geoff Zahn's five-game winning streak. After the Tigers built up a 4-2 lead, Ben Oglivie started the homer barrage with a drive in the third inning. Phil Mankowski and Mark Wagner then hit back-to-back homers to kayo Zahn in the fourth. Milt May added a round-tripper in the eighth.
A's 3, Red Sox 1 at Oakland (day game):
Homers by Mitchell Page, Wayne Gross and Earl Williams powered the Athletics to a 3-1 victory over the Red Sox. Page opened the scoring with a drive in the first inning. Gross and Williams hit their homers in succession in the fourth.
Mariners 5, Yankees 2 at Seattle (night game):
The Mariners broke their seven-game losing streak by defeating the Yankees, 5-2. Reggie Jackson homered with a man on base in the first inning to account for the Yankees' runs. The Mariners picked up a tally in their half and went ahead with a pair in the sixth on three hits and two errors. Jose Baez then iced the decision with a two-run double in the seventh.
White Sox 4, Rangers 3 at Texas (night game):
After helping the White Sox tie the score with a homer in the fourth inning, Chet Lemon singled with the bases loaded in the 10th, driving in Richie Zisk, to beat the Rangers, 4-3. Zisk singled and took third on a single by Jim Spencer, who moved to second on the throw. After an intentional pass to Lamar Johnson, Lemon singled.
Astros 8, Cubs 2 at Houston (night game):
J.R. Richard pitched a five-hitter and gained his first victory since April 12 when the Astros defeated the Cubs, 8-2. The Cubs were stopped on their six-game winning streak. After Jose Cruz batted in the Astros' first two runs with a double in the first inning, Cesar Cedeno led off with a homer in the third to spark a five-run outburst. Richard accounted for one run with a single.
Dodgers 5, Expos 1 at Montreal (night game):
Batting twice, Dusty Baker hit two singles in the seventh inning when the Dodgers scored five runs to defeat the Expos, 5-1. Baker and Steve Yeager singled and Tommy John was safe on an error, loading the bases to start the stanza. Lee Lacy struck out, but Bill Russell rapped a two-run single. Reggie Smith walked to reload the sacks. After Ron Cey struck out, Steve Garvey and Manny Mota drew passes, each forcing in a run, before Baker came up for a second time and singled to drive in the final tally.
