Today's scores and summaries:
Yankees 3, Angels 0 at California (night game):
Although suffering from a touch of the flu, Ed Figueroa turned in his fourth straight complete came and pitched the Yankees to a 3-0 victory over the Angels. Figueroa allowed only three hits, all by rookie center fielder Gil Flores. The Yankees' scoring included a homer by Thurman Munson.
White Sox 5, Indians 3 at Chicago (night game):
Alan Bannister drove in two runs and scored one to lead the White Sox to a 5-3 victory over the Indians. The White Sox counted three times in the fifth inning on consecutive singles by Eric Soderholm, Jim Essian, Ralph Garr and Bannister, with Bannister's hit being good for two RBIs. Other runs followed in the seventh on a single by Bannister, triple by Richie Zisk and single by Jim Spencer. Jim Norris batted in a pair for the Indians.
Royals 3, Rangers 2 at Kansas City (night game):
The Royals, who had lost to Bert Blyleven six straight times since 1975, broke the righthander's mastery with an unearned run in the sixth inning and beat the Rangers, 3-2. John Wathan was safe on an error by Bump Wills to open the stanza and Fred Patek walked. After Frank White forced Wathan, Dave Nelson singled to drive in the Royals' winning run.
Brewers 9, Tigers 3 at Milwaukee (night game):
Two homers by Sal Bando and one by Cecil Cooper helped power the Brewers to a 9-3 victory over the Tigers. Bando doubled and scored in the second inning before connecting for the circuit in the fifth and seventh. Cooper had two singles in addition to his homer. Don Money joined in the Brewers' attack with a double and two singles. Moose Haas held the Tigers to six hits, including homers by Jason Thompson and Milt May.
Twins 4, Blue Jays 3 at Minnesota (night game):
A wild pitch by Jerry Johnson with two out in the 11th inning allowed Roy Smalley to score and gave the Twins a 4-3 victory over the Blue Jays. Smalley walked to open the stanza, Rod Carew singled and Butch Wynegar was safe on an error to load the bases. Johnson relieved and induced Craig Kusick to hit into a double play, Smalley holding third. Then, with the count 2-2 on Larry Hisle, Johnson threw a pitch into the dirt and when the ball got away from catcher Alan Ashby, Smalley came home with the winning run.
Orioles 5, A's 1 at Oakland (night game):
Pat Kelly, Doug DeCinces and Rick Dempsey rapped three hits each to lead the Orioles to a 5-1 victory over the Athletics. Kelly's three hits gave him 17 in his last 32 at bats. Rudy May held the A's to five hits, three of them coming in the second inning when the A's scored their only run on an error by DeCinces.
Red Sox 7, Mariners 5 at Seattle (night game):
Fred Lynn, making his first appearance of the season after suffering a foot injury in spring training, hit solo homers in his first two times at bat, but the Red Sox also needed a two-run blow by George Scott to defeat the Mariners, 7-5. After Lynn's first homer to start the game, the Mariners scored five runs in their half of the first inning, kayoing Luis Tiant. Bill Stein batted in a pair with a double and scored on a single by Bob Stinson before Ruppert Jones capped the outburst with a homer. The Red Sox cut into the Mariners' margin with the aid of Lynn's second homer in the third inning before forging ahead to win in the eighth on Scott's smash.
Cardinals 3, Braves 0 at Atlanta (night game):
A three-run homer by Ken Reitz in the ninth inning carried the Cardinals to a 3-0 victory over the Braves. Don Collins, who took the mound in relief of Jamie Easterly, walked Hector Cruz. Lou Brock ran for Cruz and stole second. After another pass to Ted Simmons and forceout by Keith Hernandez, Reitz hit his homer. Al Hrabosky batted for Bob Forsch before the inning ended and then set down the Braves in their half of the ninth to finish Forsch's sixth victory.
Reds 6, Giants 4 at Cincinnati (night game):
Dave Concepcion hit his first homer of the season as the finishing blow in the first inning when the Reds erupted for five runs to defeat the Giants, 6-4. Pete Rose, who had two hits in the game to boost his career total to 2,800, led off with a single. Ken Griffey, Joe Morgan and Dan Driessen followed with doubles. Driessen was picked off second, but Cesar Geronimo resumed the attack with a single and Concepcion capped the outburst with his homer. Fred Norman had the Giants shut out until the seventh when pinch-hitter Randy Elliott smashed a grand-slam homer. Rawly Eastwick relieved and finished.
Astros 3, Pirates 0 at Houston (night game):
Mark Lemongello came within one out of a complete-game shutout before yielding the mound to Ken Forsch, who struck out Phil Garner with two men on base to save the Astros' 3-0 victory over the Pirates. The Astros scored all their runs in the fourth inning. Enos Cabell singled and stole second. Cesar Cedeno was hit by a pitch. Bob Watson, Cliff Johnson and Art Howe then followed with run-scoring singles.
Cubs 5, Expos 3 at Montreal (night game):
Larry Biittner hit a bases-loaded single in the sixth inning when the Cubs rallied for four runs to defeat the Expos, 5-3. The Expos held a 3-1 lead before the Cubs began their comeback, starting with passes to Manny Trillo and Steve Ontiveros. Bill Buckner and Ivan DeJesus followed with run-scoring singles to tie the game. After another walk filled the bases, Biittner delivered his single for two runs to provide the Cubs' winning margin.
Mets 3, Dodgers 0 at New York (night game):
Lenny Randle and Dave Kingman clouted homers in the first inning to provide more than enough support for Jon Matlack, who pitched the Mets to a 3-0 victory over the Dodgers. Randle hit his homer with one away and, after Ed Kranepool singled, Kingman smashed a tremendous drive over the left-center field wall. The ball took one hop before striking a parking lot fence 518 feet from home plate. Matlack scattered seven hits and became the first pitcher to shut out the Dodgers this season.
Phillies 5, Padres 4 at Philadelphia (night game):
Davey Johnson, who came back from Japan to sign with the Phillies, delivered a pinch-single in the eighth inning as the highlight of a three-run rally that produced a 5-4 victory over the Padres. Jerry Martin, also pinch-hitting, drew a walk to open the stanza and scored on singles by Bob Boone and Terry Harmon. Johnson then singled, driving in Boone to tie the score at 4-4 and when center fielder Gene Richards booted the ball, Harmon also crossed the plate with the winning run.
