Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 8, Yankees 2 at California (day game):
Joe Rudi, who has proved to be Frank Tanana's best friend on the field, drove in two runs with a triple and single to help the Angels' lefthander defeat the Yankees, 8-2. With Tanana on the mound, Rudi has collected 15 hits in 36 at bats and has driven in 19 runs. The Angels whacked Mike Torrez for four runs in the first inning. Jerry Remy batted in one run with a triple and scored himself on Rudi's single. Rudi hit his triple in the fifth when the Angels added three runs.

Indians 4, White Sox 3 at Chicago (day game):
A triple by Johnny Grubb in the eighth inning and single by Buddy Bell, scoring pinch-runner Paul Dade, gave the Indians a 4-3 victory over the White Sox.

Rangers 7, Royals 3 at Kansas City (day game):
The first Rangers' player to hit three homers in one game, Willie Horton accomplished the feat in a 7-3 victory over the Royals. Jim Fregosi, appearing at bat for the first time this season, opened the scoring with a homer in the first inning and Horton followed with his initial blast. Horton hit a sacrifice fly in the third, smashed a two-run homer in the fifth and capped his slugging spree with a solo shot in the eighth.

[DH] Tigers 5, Brewers 3 (day game) / Brewers 3, Tigers 2 at Milwaukee (day game):
Playing a pair of 10-inning games, the Tigers won the opener of a doubleheader, 5-3, before the Brewers came back to gain a 3-2 victory in the nightcap before a Jacket Day crowd of 47,732. In the first game, Rusty Staub homered for the Tigers in the eighth inning to tie the score at 3-3. In the 10th, Tito Fuentes was safe on an error. With two out, Ben Oglivie singled pinch-runner Chuck Scrivener to third and both then scored on a double by Steve Kemp. After the second game went into overtime, Steve Brye tripled for the Brewers in the 10th. John Hiller, replacing Dave Roberts, struck out Cecil Cooper but then walked Dan Thomas and Sal Bando intentionally to load the bases. Don Money caught the Tigers off guard with a bunt and beat it out for a hit as Brye scored the game-winner.

Twins 5, Blue Jays 3 at Minnesota (day game):
Jerry Garvin's streak of five straight victories was stopped by the Twins, who kayoed the rookie in the fifth inning and defeated the Blue Jays, 5-3. The Twins already were leading, 3-1, when they loaded the bases in the fifth on a single by Lyman Bostock, pass to Dan Ford and safe bunt by Rod Carew, chasing Garvin. Larry Hisle greeted reliever Pete Vuckovich with a sacrifice fly. After a single by Rich Chiles filled the sacks again, Butch Wynegar also hit a sacrifice fly to assure the Twins' victory.

Orioles 3, A's 2 at Oakland (day game):
The Orioles moved into first place in the East Division, ahead of the Yankees, by defeating the Athletics, 3-2, for their ninth victory in the last 11 games. The Orioles scored what proved to be the winning run in the fifth inning. Al Bumbry singled with one out and stole second. After the A's walked Tony Muser intentionally, Lee May singled to drive in Bumbry. Dennis Martinez saved the game, putting down an A's threat after Ross Grimsley was removed with two men on base and none out in the eighth inning.

Red Sox 5, Mariners 4 at Seattle (day game):
Bill Campbell pitched three hitless innings in relief and preserved Bill Lee's first victory of the season as the Red Sox defeated the Mariners, 5-4. Carlton Fisk hit a two-run homer for the Red Sox in the second inning, but the Mariners came back with three in their half, two scoring on a circuit clout by Rupper tJones. The Red Sox picked up singletons in the next two stanzas before counting their deciding run in the fifth when Dwight Evans singled after Rice was safe on an error and the next two batters walked to load the bases.

Braves 15, Cardinals 12 at Atlanta (day game):
Making an almost unbelievable comeback, the Braves overcame a nine-run deficit and won a wild game from the Cardinals, 15-12. The Cards took a 10-1 lead by exploding for nine runs in the fourth inning. Bake McBride smacked a three-run double. Dave Rader, who went 5-for-5 playing instead of Ted Simmons, hit two singles during the outburst, each driving in a run. The Braves began their comeback with three runs in the fifth on doubles by Jerry Royster and Rowland Office and a homer by Jeff Burroughs. In the next inning, Burroughs walked with the bases loaded and Gary Matthews followed with a grand-slam homer, cutting the Cards' lead to 10-9. The Cards then made it 12-9 with homers by McBride and Jerry Mumphrey in the eighth, but the Braves refused to quit and won the game with a six-run rally in their half. After a walk, double by Biff Porcoroba, single by Tom Paciorek, sacrifice fly by Vic Correll and single by Pat Rockett produced three runs, two walks loaded the bases. On a 3-and-2 pitch with all runners moving, Barry Bonnell singled and cleared the sacks to give the Braves their winning margin.

Reds 6, Giants 2 at Cincinnati (day game):
Gary Nolan, who was sidelined for first the six weeks of the season, gained his second victory since returning to action when the Reds defeated the Giants, 6-2. The Reds scored three runs in the first inning, one of them coming on Dan Driessen's theft of home on a double steal with George Foster. Nolan gave up homers by Bill Madlock and Terry Whitfield in the third but lasted on the mound through seven innings before Champ Summers batted for him and hit for the circuit.

Pirates 3, Astros 1 at Houston (day game):
A single by Al Oliver in the eighth inning scored Omar Moreno with the Pirates' deciding run in a 3-1 victory over the Astros. Moreno walked, stole second, moved to third on an infield out by Dave Parker and crossed the plate on Oliver's single to break a 1-1 tie. Singles by Phil Garner and Duffy Dyer around a sacrifice added an insurance tally in the ninth.

[DH] Cubs 4, Expos 3 (day game) / Cubs 4, Expos 2 at Montreal (day game):
Jerry Morales drove in the Cubs' first two runs in each game of a doubleheader to mark 4-3 and 4-2 victories over the Expos. In the opener, a pass to Greg Gross, single by Bobby Murcer and double by Morales produced a pair in the first inning. The Cubs loaded the bases in the fifth and added their other runs on a sacrifice fly by Gross and single by Larry Biittner. Barry Foote drove in the Expos' runs with a double and homer. In the nightcap, the Cubs decided the outcome with three runs in the third inning. Ivan DeJesus and Biittner singled and Murcer walked, setting the stage for a two-run single by Morales. Steve Ontiveros followed with a single for the third run.

Dodgers 4, Mets 3 at New York (day game):
With two out in the 12th inning, the Dodgers put together singles by Steve Garvey, Rick Monday and John Hale for a run to beat the Mets, 4-3. After the first nine innings ended in a 1-1 tie, the Dodgers took the lead in the 10th with a two-run homer by Ron Cey, but the third baseman committed an error that enabled the Mets to tie the score in their half. Bruce Boisclair singled and scored on a triple by Lee Mazzilli. With two out, Cey muffed a grounder by Mike Phillips, allowing Mazzilli to score the tying run.

Phillies 5, Padres 2 at Philadelphia (day game):
The Phillies, who had lost to Randy Jones seven straight times since June 1975, ended his mastery and defeated the Padres, 5-2. Bob Davis hit his first major league homer for the Padres in the third inning, but the Phillies bounced back with three runs in their half on a pass to Mike Schmidt, a stolen base, doubles by Greg Luzinski and Davey Johnson and a single by Jerry Martin. Singles by Ted Sizemore and Larry Bowa around a sacrifice by Steve Carlton added a tally in the fourth. Martin capped the Phils' scoring with a homer in the seventh. Carlton struck out 11 in gaining his fifth victory in a row.
