Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 8, Angels 7 at California (night game):
Successive singles by Dwight Evans, Butch Hobson and Denny Doyle in the 11th inning produced an 8-7 triumph for the Red Sox over the Angels, after the Angels had rallied for four runs in the ninth. The Red Sox struck for five runs in the sixth when Jim Rice hit a two-run homer and George Scott unloaded the first of his two solo blows.

Twins 8, Indians 1 at Minnesota (night game):
The Twins defeated the Indians, 8-1, and bagged their seventh victory in a row behind Geoff Zahn's seven-hit pitching. The American League West Division leaders broke a 1-1 tie in the second inning when Mike Cubbage was safe on a fielder's choice and Dan Ford and Rob Wilfong followed with singles.

A's 8, Yankees 4 at Oakland (night game):
Five singles, a walk and two errors helped the Athletics score five runs and rout Ken Holtzman in the first inning en route to an 8-4 victory over the Yankees. Wayne Gross hit his 10th home run in the third and Earl Williams rapped No. 8 in the seventh. Rookie reliever Bob Lacey pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings to gain his first major league victory.

Mariners 8, Orioles 3 at Seattle (night game):
The Mariners turned Jim Palmer's uncharacteristic wild streak into a four-run second inning and an 8-3 victory over the Orioles. Five walks, singles by Bill Stein and Craig Reynolds along with Larry Milbourne's sacrifice fly sent Palmer to an early shower. Mike Kekich, returning from the disabled list, pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth, then blanked the Orioles over the last three innings to earn his first save.

Cubs 9, Padres 6 at Chicago (day game):
Utilityman Gene Clines drove in five runs with two singles, a double and the third home run of his major league career to spark the Cubs past the Padres, 9-6. A two-run single by Clines in the fifth proved decisive as the Cubs scored their seventh victory in eight games.

Phillies 10, Dodgers 6 at Philadelphia (night game):
An error by Ron Cey opened the door to a five-run third inning that sent the Phillies on the way to a 10-6 triumph over the Dodgers. The Phillies, headed for their fifth straight victory, scored what proved to be the winning run in the fourth when Mike Schmidt and Greg Luzinski singled and Schmidt tallied as Davey Johnson grounded out.
