Today's scores and summaries:

White Sox 7, Royals 4 at Chicago (night game):
A homer by Oscar Gamble with two men on base helped the White Sox score five runs in the second inning to account for a 7-4 victory over the Royals. Gamble's homer followed singles by Richie Zisk and Jim Spencer. Chet Lemon kept the inning going with a single, stole second and scored on a single by Eric Soderholm, who had four hits in the game. After taking third on a single by Jim Essian, Soderholm scored when Ralph Garr forced Essian.

Brewers 3, Blue Jays 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
Robin Yount singled in the 10th inning for his third hit of the game and drove in Sixto Lezcano to give the Brewers a 3-2 victory over the Blue Jays. Ron Fairly homered to help the Blue Jays take a 2-0 lead, but the Brewers tied the score in the sixth with singles by Cecil Cooper, Steve Brye and Von Joshua, plus an infield out by Charlie Moore. In the 10th, Lezcano singled, took second on a sacrifice by Brye and scored with two out on Yount's clutch hit.

Rangers 6, Tigers 3 at Texas (night game):
Gaylord Perry became the third pitcher to win 100 games in each major league when the veteran righthander recovered from a shaky start and hurled the Rangers to a 6-3 victory over the Tigers. Perry won 134 games in 10 seasons with the Giants in the N. L. and attained 100 victories in the A. L. in less than six seasons with the Indians and Rangers. Cy Young and Jim Bunning were the only previous pitchers to reach the century mark in both leagues. Perry gave up the Tigers' runs in the first inning, but then allowed only three hits the rest of the way and retired the last 17 batters in a row. The Rangers came to Perry's rescue with a five-run rally in the fourth inning, featuring a bases-loaded single by John Ellis.

Braves 10, Expos 8 at Atlanta (night game):
Biff Pocoroba, who won the previous night's game with a grand slam, smashed a homer and double to lead the Braves' attack in a 10-8 victory over the Expos, who suffered their eighth straight defeat. Pocoroba drove in two runs and Barry Bonnell also accounted for two with a pair of singles. Jerry Royster and Jeff Burroughs each had three of the Braves' 16 hits. Larry Parrish hit two homers and Andre Dawson one for the Expos. Dawson's homer was the first of his major league career.

Reds 8, Pirates 3 at Cincinnati (day game):
Jerry Reuss, the only Pirates' starter without a victory to his credit, suffered his fifth straight loss when the Reds took advantage of the lefthander's wildness to gain an 8-3 triumph. The Reds captialized on four walks in the first inning to score four runs, two counting on a single by Bob Bailey. Reuss departed in the fifth after issuing passes to Ken Griffey and Joe Morgan. The runners worked a double steal with Morgan recording his 319th theft to tie the Reds' career record set by Bob Bescher over a period from 1908 to '13. Griffey then scored on a sacrifice fly by Bailey and Morgan crossed the plate on a single by Dave Concepcion. Al Oliver accounted for the Pirates' runs with a homer in the sixth inning.

Cardinals 8, Astros 4 at Houston (night game):
The Cardinals, who had lost six straight times in the Astrodome since last June 7, broke a tie with four unearned runs and defeated the Astros, 8-4. The Astros knotted the count at 3-3 with homers by Cesar Cedeno and Jose Cruz in the fourth inning and pulled even again at 4-4 with a triple by Joe Ferguson and a passed ball in the sixth. The Cardinals then went ahead to stay in the seventh with a single by Bake McBride, double by Ted Simmons and a bad throw by Art Howe on the relay to the plate. Another error by Howe opened the gates for three more unearned runs in the eighth.

Mets 2, Giants 0 at New York (night game):
Jon Matlack allowed only five hits and posted his second straight shutout, pitching the Mets to a 2-0 victory over the Giants. At one stage of his performance, the lefthander retired 16 batters in a row. Lenny Randle, who had three hits, doubled in the third inning and scored the Mets' first run on an error and a wild pitch. A pass to Bud Harrelson and singles by Randle and Jerry Grote added the other tally in the eighth.

Dodgers 6, Phillies 4 at Philadelphia (night game):
A homer by Reggie Smith in the seventh inning after Bill Russell had singled provided the Dodgers' winning margin in a 6-4 victory over the Phillies. After the Dodgers took a 2-0 lead, the Phillies went ahead with three runs in the second on singles by Richie Hebner and Mike Schmidt, a double by Bob Boone, an infield out and single by Wayne Twitchell. Davey Lopes put the Dodgers back in front with a two-run single in the fourth and Smith then decided the outcome with his homer in the seventh.
