Today's scores and summaries:

[DH] Red Sox 14, Brewers 10 (day game) / Brewers 6, Red Sox 0 at Boston (night game):
After winning the opening game of a doubleheader, 14-10, in a slugfest that produced a record-tying total of 11 homers, the Red Sox were held to two hits by Eduardo Rodriguez in the nightcap and lost to the Brewers, 6-0. In the lidlifter, the Red Sox had two homers by Fred Lynn and one each by Butch Hobson, Dwight Evans, Carl Yastrzemski and George Scott, while the Brewers countered with two round-trippers by Don Money and solo swats, all in the seventh inning, by Sixto Lezcano, Mike Hegan and Von Joshua. The Red Sox won with a seven-run explosion in the eighth inning, Evans started the outburst with a two-run homer and Scott capped it with a grand slam. In the nightcap, the Brewers backed Rodriguez' pitching with an attack that included homers by Jim Wohlford and Ken McMullen. Wohlford connected for the circuit with a man on base and drove in two more runs with an infield out and single.

Twins 8, Angels 5 at California (day game):
A pinch-homer by Craig Kusick with two men on base climaxed a five-run rally in the sixth inning and brought the Twins an 8-5 victory over the Angels. Trailing, 4-1, the Twins had Butch Wynegar on first with two out before Larry Hisle singled and Glenn Adams doubled to drive in two runs and chase Angels' starter Wayne Simpson. Mickey Scott relieved and passed Dan Ford. Don Kirkwood then took the mound for the Angels and on his first pitch Kusick hit his deciding homer.

Tigers 14, White Sox 3 at Chicago (day game):
Wilbur Wood's first start since May 9, 1976, was wrecked by the Tigers, who kayoed the lefthander in the second inning and walloped the White Sox, 14-3. Jason Thompson led the Tigers at bat, driving in five runs with a homer, triple and sacrifice fly. Wood had made two relief appearances previously this year to start his comeback after suffering a fractured left kneecap when hit by a batted ball last season.

Indians 7, Royals 1 at Kansas City (day game):
With Jim Bibby in command on the mound, the Indians posted a 7-1 victory to hand the Royals their fifth defeat in the last six games. Buddy Bell cracked three straight singles and then homered to lead the Tribe's attack. Rick Manning also hit for the circuit.

[DH] Orioles 5, Yankees 1 (day game) / Yankees 8, Orioles 2 at New York (day game):
Rudy May, traded by the Yankees to the Orioles last June 15, beat his former teammates for the fifth straight time, posting a 5-1 victory in the opener of a doubleheader, but the Yankees came back to win the nightcap, 8-2. May beat the Yankees three times last season and now has two decisions over his old club this year. The Orioles tied the score at 1-1 with a homer by Ken Singleton in the fourth inning before knocking out Catfish Hunter in the sixth. Eddie Murray drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single and, after Sparky Lyle relieved, Pat Kelly singled to add another tally. In the nightcap, Graig Nettles drove in three runs for the Yankees with a homer and double. Paul Blair and Fred Stanley batted in two apiece. Kelly doubled for the Orioles in the fifth, hitting safely in his 18th straight game, and scored on a single by Kiko Garcia. Doug DeCinces homered with one out in the ninth for the Orioles' other run.

Mariners 6, A's 2 at Oakland (day game):
A perfect day at bat by Dan Meyer, who collected four hits and drove in three runs, featured the Mariners' 6-2 victory over the Athletics. The Mariners used three pitchers, who held the A's to three singles. Dick Pole gave up only one hit before being removed with two men on base in the sixth inning. Bill Laxton retired one batter and walked one. Enrique Romo then relieved, put down the A's threat and finished the game on a yield of two hits in the last 3 2/3 innings.

Rangers 7, Blue Jays 4 at Texas (night game):
Juan Beniquez smashed a homer and triple and Lew Beasley contributed a double and two singles in a 17-hit attack that carried the Rangers to a 7-4 victory over the Blue Jays. Beasley, starting his first game in the outfield since being called up from Tucson (Pacific Coast), singled and drove in the Rangers' initial run in first inning. The Rangers added a pair in the third on doubles by Beasley and Toby Harrah, along with a single by Bump Wills. Beniquez hit his homer in the fourth and added his triple, driving in another run, in the seventh.

Braves 5, Cubs 2 at Atlanta (day game):
A two-run triple by Gary Matthews in the first inning and two-run homer by Jeff Burroughs in the third enabled Andy Messersmith to return to action with a victory as the Braves defeated the Cubs, 5-2, Messersmith, who had been idled since April 30 by a pulled side muscle, pitched six innings before Jamie Easterly took over in relief.

[DH] Reds 8, Mets 1 (day game) / Mets 4, Reds 3 at Cincinnati (day game):
A double by Dave Kingman and single by Mike Phillips in the 11th inning gave the Mets a 4-3 victory in the second game of a doubleheader to gain a split with the Reds, who won the first game, 8-1. Johnny Bench settled the issue quickly in the Reds' favor in the opener by hitting a homer with two men on base in the first inning. Jack Billingham, the winner with relief assistance from Mike Caldwell, singled a run across in the second and the Reds then capped their scoring with four runs in the fifth, two crossing the plate on a single by Bob Bailey. In the nightcap, John Stearns homered for the Mets and Joe Morgan for the Reds. After the Reds took a 3-1 lead in the sixth, the Mets came back to tie the score with doubles by Joe Torre, Roy Staiger and Ed Kranepool in the seventh.

Phillies 6, Astros 3 at Houston (day game):

Expos 3, Padres 1 at Montreal (day game):
The Expos ended their 11-game losing streak with a 3-1 victory over the Padres behind the six-hit, 11-strikeout pitching of Steve Rogers. John D'Acquisto, making his first start for the Padres since being obtained from the Cardinals, allowed only four hits in seven innings but was a victim of his own wildness. The Expos scored two runs in the first inning on only one hit, a leadoff single by Dave Cash. Warren Cromartie walked. After a wild pitch, Cash scored on an infield out by Wayne Garrett. Another wild pitch then allowed Cromartie to cross the plate. Pete Mackanin scored the Expos' last run in the seventh on D'Acquisto's fourth wild pitch of the game.

Pirates 11, Dodgers 4 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Dave Parker smashed two homers, one of them with the bases loaded, to lead the Pirates' slugging display in an 11-4 victory over the Dodgers. Don Sutton, who was kayoed in the fourth inning, drew his first defeat after winning six games. John Candelaria, who gained his sixth straight victory, batted in the Pirates' first run with a single in the second and Omar Moreno capped the inning by hitting for the circuit with two men on base. Candelaria singled for another RBI in the fourth when the Pirates piled up five runs. After Sutton departed, Parker hit his grand slam off reliever Al Downing. Parker and Al Oliver climaxed the Pirates' attack with back-to-back homers in the eighth.

Giants 2, Cardinals 0 at St. Louis (day game):
Larry Dierker, making his first appearance since fracturing his leg in spring training March 3, allowed only three hits in five innings, but they were enough to bring the Giants a 2-0 victory over the Cardinals.
