Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 2, Brewers 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Working out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth inning, Jim Palmer pitched the Orioles to a 2-1 victory over the Brewers. Palmer ended the game by making Charlie Moore his 12th strikeout victim. The Orioles scored a run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Lee May after singles by Rick Dempsey and Al Bumbry and a pass to Ken Singleton filled the bases. Don Money tied the score with a homer in the eighth, but Singleton came back with a circuit clout off Jerry Augustine in the Orioles' half for the winning run.

Indians 7, Mariners 5 at Cleveland (night game):
The Indians broke a 5-5 tie with two runs in the eighth inning and defeated the Mariners, 7-5. Bruce Bochte singled to open the stanza and was forced by Rico Carty. Andre Thornton ran for Carty and stole second. After a walk to Buddy Bell, Ray Fosse was safe on an error by Larry Milbourne to load the bases. Frank Duffy laid down a safe bunt, scoring Thornton with the tie-breaking run, and Duane Kuiper added an insurance tally with an infield hit.

Angels 2, Tigers 1 at Detroit (night game):
Nolan Ryan set an A. L. record for most games with 10 or more strikeouts when the Angels' fireballer achieved the feat for the 75th time in posting a 2-1 victory over the Tigers. Ryan fanned 12 and allowed only three hits while gaining the 100th triumph of his A. L. career. The Angels' ace and Sam McDowell, former Indians' star, previously had been tied for the most 10-or-more-strikeout games at 74 each. Sandy Koufax of the Dodgers holds the major league mark, 97. Counting his previous service in the N. L., Ryan's total was 89. John Hiller, who made his second start of the season and third in five years for the Tigers, was the loser to Ryan when the Angels scored their runs in the second inning on singles by Joe Rudi, Bobby Bonds and Ron Jackson and a sacrifice fly by Bobby Grich.

Yankees 6, Red Sox 5 at New York (night game):
A four-run rally in the seventh inning at the expense of Luis Tiant carried the Yankees to a 6-5 victory over the Red Sox. George Scott hit a homer and Steve Dillard drove in two runs with a double and sacrifice fly as the Red Sox took a 5-2 lead. Opening the Yankee seventh, Graig Nettles and Carlos May smashed consecutive homers. Bucky Dent singled, moved up on a sacrifice and scored the tying run on a double by Mickey Rivers. Thurman Munson then singled to score the winning marker.

Expos 5, Cubs 4 at Chicago (day game):
After Barry Foote hit a homer in the eighth inning to tie the score, the Expos went on to beat the Cubs, 5-4, with a run in the 15th on a double by Chris Speier and pinch-single by Jerry Morales. Rick Reuschel, who started on the mound for the Cubs, hit his first homer of the season and second of his six-year major league career to account for two runs in the fourth, putting the Cubs ahead, 4-1. Tony Perez batted in an Expos' run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth and another with a single in the seventh, driving in Dave Cash both times, before Foote hit his score-tying homer.

Dodgers 4, Astros 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
Rick Rhoden and Charlie Hough shared the pitching honors as the Dodgers defeated the Astros, 4-2. Rhoden gained credit for the victory, bringing his record to 7-1, while Hough, who relieved in the seventh inning, picked up his 12th save. The Dodgers grabbed the lead with two runs in the second on a single by Steve Garvey, double by Rick Monday and single by Dusty Baker. Doubles by Ted Martinez and Ron Cey tacked on a run in the fifth. The Dodgers' final tally counted in the seventh on a walk to Steve Yeager, single by Martinez and sacrifice fly by Reggie Smith.

Pirates 5, Mets 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
A loser of five previous decisions, Jerry Reuss gained his first victory of the season, with relief help from Terry Forster, when the Pirates defeated the Mets, 5-2. The Pirates beat Jon Matlack, who had gone into the game with two straight shutouts to his credit. A double by Rennie Stennett in the second inning snapped Matlack's scoreless streak. The Pirates then chased Matlack with three runs in the fourth on a single by Al Oliver, pass to Stennett and singles by Phil Garner, Reuss and Omar Moreno. Oliver added a run with a homer off Bob Myrick in the fifth.

Padres 4, Braves 3 at San Diego (night game):
A triple by Doug Rader with the bases loaded climaxed a scoring outburst in the fourth inning and produced the Padres' 4-3 victory over the Braves. Bob Shirley singled, Bill Almon walked and George Hendrick singled for one run. After Dave Winfield forced Almon, Mike Ivie walked to fill the sacks, setting the stage for Rader's triple.

Cardinals 8, Phillies 5 at St. Louis (night game):
The Cardinals knocked out Jim Kaat in the fifth inning and defeated the Phillies, 8-5, to spoil the 38-year-old lefthander's hopes of winning as a wedding present for his new bride. Kaat was married 24 hours earlier to Linda Jankowski of Okawville, Ill. Hector Cruz batted in two runs with a triple during the Cards' kayo of Kaat. Bob Forsch, who started for the Cards, gained his seventh victory against one defeat. Greg Luzinski accounted for the Phillies' five runs with two homers and a single.
