Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 6, Twins 0 at Baltimore (night game):
Rudy May scattered six hits and pitched the Orioles to a 6-0 victory over the Twins. The Orioles staked May to a two-run lead in the first inning. After Al Bumbry tripled and scored on an infield out by Mark Belanger, the Orioles counted their second run on a pass to Pat Kelly with the bases loaded. Lee May batted in two runs with a single in the second and Ken Singleton added the last pair with a single in the sixth.

Red Sox 10, Royals 1 at Boston (night game):
The Red Sox exploded for six runs in the seventh inning, including successive homers by Carlton Fisk and George Scott, to sew up a 10-1 victory over the Royals. Hal McRae saved Royals from being shut out with a homer in the eighth.

Indians 3, A's 1 at Cleveland (night game):
With Wayne Garland hurling a four-hitter, the Indians defeated the Athletics, 3-1, for their fifth straight victory. The Indians broke on top with two runs in the second inning. Bruce Bochte walked and raced home on a double by Rico Carty. After a safe bunt by Buddy Bell, Carty scored as Fred Kendall was grounding into a double play. The A's picked up their run in the sixth on a single by Mike Jorgensen and double by Marty Perez. The Indians matched it in their half with a pass to Bochte, single by Carty and forceout by Bell.

Mariners 2, Tigers 1 at Detroit (night game):
Mark Fidrych's delayed season debut with Tigers was spoiled when an unearned run on an error by Tito Fuentes in the sixth inning enabled the Mariners to defeat the Tigers, 2-1. A crowd of 44,207 turned out to watch The Bird pitch for the first time since undergoing knee surgery March 31. Tom Veryzer homered for the Tigers in the third inning. The Mariners knotted the count in the fifth with a single by Bob Stinson, double by Larry Milbourne and sacrifice fly by Dave Collins. With two out in the sixth, Dan Meyer doubled and scored the Mariners' winning run when Fuentes failed to come up with a ground ball by Bill Stein.

Brewers 6, Rangers 5 at Milwaukee (night game):
A sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Steve Brye in the ninth inning scored Sal Bando and enabled the Brewers to defeat the Rangers, 6-5. The Rangers had a chance to break the game wide open when they loaded the bases with none out in the top half of the ninth but settled for only one run on a sacrifice fly by Jim Fregosi, tying the score at 5-5. In the Brewers' half, Bando singled, took third on a single by Cecil Cooper and sped home after Brye hit a long fly batting for Von Joshua.

Yankees 8, White Sox 6 at New York (night game):
The White Sox knocked out Catfish Hunter in the second inning and built up a 5-0 lead, but the Yankees came back behind the hitting of Thurman Munson, Chris Chambliss and Reggie Jackson to gain an 8-6 victory. Oscar Gamble homered with a man on base in the first before the White Sox chased Hunter while scoring three more runs in the second. Munson paced Yankee rallies by driving in three runs with a triple and sacrifice fly. Jackson and Chambliss each accounted for two RBIs. Jackson hit a homer in the second to spark a five-run outburst and drove in the go-ahead tally with a single in the fifth. Two more runs in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Munson and single by Chambliss produced the deciding margin before Richie Zisk homered in the seventh.

Angels 4, Blue Jays 1 at Toronto (night game):
Errors by Bob Bailor and Alan Ashby in the seventh inning helped the Angels score three runs to defeat the Blue Jays, 4-1. Tony Solaita walked to open the stanza. Pinch-runner Orlando Ramirez took third on a single by Joe Rudi and scored when Bailor booted a grounder by Bobby Bonds. After an intentional pass to Dave Chalk, Rudi scored on a sacrifice fly by Bobby Grich, Bonds taking third on the play. As Chalk stole second, Ashby threw wildly to third in an attempt to catch Bonds, enabling the runner to cross the plate on the error.

Cubs 4, Pirates 2 at Chicago (day game):
Homers by Manny Trillo and Bobby Murcer, plus two RBIs by Jerry Morales, carried the Cubs to a 4-2 victory over the Pirates and resulted in John Candelaria's first loss of the season. Larry Biittner singled in the fourth inning, took second on an infield out and scored the Cubs' first run on a single by Morales, who was out trying for second. That cost the Cubs a run because Trillo followed with a homer. After the Pirates tied the score, Murcer broke the deadlock with a circuit clout in the sixth. A single by Biittner and triple by Morales added an insurance tally in the eighth.

Dodgers 10, Reds 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
The Dodgers piled up 17 hits for their season high in an attack that produced a 10-3 victory over the Reds. Reggie Smith and Steve Garvey had three hits apiece. Garvey's blows included a homer. Dusty Baker also hit for the circuit. The Dodgers built up a 5-0 lead in the first three innings. After the Reds narrowed the gap with a homer by George Foster in the fourth and two unearned runs in the fifth, the Dodgers broke the game wide open with a five-run outburst on seven hits in the eighth inning.

Phillies 5, Mets 4 at Philadelphia (night game):
Tommy Hutton batted in four runs, including the game-winning tally in the eighth inning to lead the Phillies to a 5-4 victory over the Mets. Hutton drove in a run with a single in the first and homered with a man on base in the sixth as the Phils built up a 4-1 lead at the expense of Tom Seaver. The Mets took Seaver off the hook with a three-run rally in the seventh. After Roy Staiger doubled, Ed Kranepool batted for Seaver and homered. John Milner and John Stearns followed with doubles for the tying tally. The Phils' winning run was set up in the eighth when Mike Schmidt doubled. Terry Harmon, running for Schmidt, moved to third on an infield out and scored on a sacrifice fly by Hutton.

Astros 4, Padres 3 at San Diego (night game):
Jose Cruz rapped four hits, driving in two runs and scoring one, to lead the Astros to a 4-3 victory over the Padres. Bob Watson homered for the Astros in the second inning. After the Padres took a 3-1 lead, Cruz tied the score with a two-run single in the fifth. Then in the seventh, Cruz doubled and counted the winning run on a double by Joe Ferguson.

Giants 4, Braves 3 at San Francisco (night game):
After batting in two runs with a triple in the second inning, Tim Foli came through with the game-winning single in the 10th as the Giants defeated the Braves, 4-3, for their fifth straight victory. With two out in the overtime stanza, Larry Herndon was hit by a pitch and stole second. The Braves passed Gary Thomasson intentionally to get at Foli, who wrecked the move with his single. Barry Bonnell, Braves' rookie center fielder, had a perfect 5-for-5 night at bat.

Cardinals 7, Expos 3 at St. Louis (night game):
The first grand slam of Ken Reitz' major league career capped a six-run rally in the fourth inning and powered the Cardinals to a 7-3 victory over the Expos. Santo Alcala, the Expos' loser, hit his first major league homer in the third before being knocked out in the fourth. The Cards started with a run on singles by Garry Templeton and Tony Scott around a balk. Scott stopped at third on a double by Keith Hernandez and scored on an infield hit by Hector Cruz. Dave Rader then singled to load the bases and set the stage for Reitz' jackpot wallop. Larry Dierker, who had lost his only previous start after coming back from a broken leg suffered in spring training, pitched seven innings and gained his first victory of the season.
