Today's scores and summaries:
Red Sox 5, Yankees 1 at Boston (night game):
Jim Rice and Butch Hobson hit homers to back a route-going performance by Reggie Cleveland, who pitched the Red Sox to a 5-1 victory over the Yankees. Rice rapped his round-tripper in the first inning. After the Yankees got their run on a homer by Graig Nettles in the second, George Scott walked and Hobson hit for the circuit in the Red Sox half. Rick Miller added a two-run single in the sixth.
Angels 7, Indians 6 at Cleveland (night game):
With two out in the 10th inning, Jerry Remy singled for his fifth hit of the game and drove in the run that gave the Angels a 7-6 victory over the Indians. Rico Carty hit a two-run homer for the Indians in the fourth. The Angels kayoed Wayne Garland in the fifth while taking a 5-3 lead, but the Indians went ahead again before Bobby Bonds smacked a homer in the seventh to tie the score at 6-6. In the 10th, Willie Aikens doubled and yielded the paths to Gil Flores, who crossed the plate on Remy's single to enable Dave LaRoche in relief to gain his first victory in an Angels' uniform.
Tigers 5, A's 2 at Detroit (night game):
Recently converted from a reliever, John Hiller gained his first victory as a starter this season when the Tigers defeated the Athletics, 5-2. Hiller gave up a homer by Marty Perez in the eighth inning and was leading only 3-2, but Mickey Stanley and Milt May clinched his decision by hitting for the circuit in the Tigers' half. Hiller then ran out of steam in the ninth and Steve Foucault took over to finish the game.
Twins 8, Orioles 3 at Minnesota (night game):
Sparked by Jerry Terrell, who collected three singles in four trips, the Twins defeated the Orioles, 8-3. Terrell drove in one run and scored two. Craig Kusick contributed a homer to the Twins' attack. Lee May hit a pair of homers for the Orioles for the second straight night and accounted for all their runs.
Reds 5, Braves 3 at Cincinnati (night game):
After hitting a homer in the seventh inning, Cesar Geronimo accounted for two more runs with a single in the eighth when the Reds scored three times to defeat the Braves, 5-3. A single by Ken Griffey and passes to Joe Morgan and Dan Driessen preceded Geronimo's single that put the Reds ahead, 4-3. Dave Concepcion followed with another single to add an insurance run.
Astros 5, Dodgers 2 at Houston (night game):
The slumping Dodgers suffered their fourth straight defeat, losing to the Astros, 5-2. Steve Garvey batted in the Dodgers' runs with a double in the first inning. A homer by Joe Ferguson in the fourth and a run on singles by Willie Crawford and Enos Cabell around a walk to Ferguson in the sixth brought the Astros even. Then in the seventh, after Art Howe was hit by a pitch and Cesar Cedeno walked, the Astros pushed over three runs on singles by Julio Gonzalez, Crawford and Cliff Johnson.
Mets 6, Expos 2 at New York (night game):
The Mets welcomed Joe Torre as their new manager, succeeding Joe Frazier, by defeating the Expos, 6-2, to snap a six-game losing streak. The Expos counted their pair in the first inning on a single by Chris Speier, triple by Gary Carter and single by Tony Perez. John Milner batted in the tying tallies in the third and the Mets then went ahead to stay in the fourth when Ed Kranepool doubled and Jerry Grote singled. Milner accounted for his third RBI of the game with a single in the seventh scoring Lenny Randle, who had reached base with a double.
Phillies 6, Pirates 5 at Philadelphia (night game):
Garry Maddox, who led off the game with a homer, later brought the Phillies from behind with a two-run triple in the seventh inning to beat the Pirates, 6-5. After an exchange of leads that saw the Pirates go ahead, 5-4, Larry Bowa walked in the seventh, Davey Johnson singled and Maddox decided the outcome with his triple.
Padres 4, Giants 2 at San Francisco (night game):
Taking advantage of poor play by the Giants, the Padres scored two unearned runs in the eighth inning to gain a 4-2 victory, extending their winning streak to five games. In the eighth, Gene Richards singled and advanced on a sacrifice. Mike Ivie was passed intentionally and was forced by Dave Winfield. George Hendrick grounded to Bill Madlock, who started to throw to second, but Rob Andrews failed to cover the bag. Madlock then made a hurried throw and threw wildly to first, allowing Richards and Winfield to score.
Cardinals 6, Cubs 0 at St. Louis (night game):
Following the shutout example of Pete Falcone in the previous day's game, John Denny pitched the Cardinals to a 6-0 victory over the Cubs. The Cards assured Denny of his seventh straight victory without a defeat by racking up three runs in the first inning on a single by Bake McBride, two walks, a wild pitch and single by Ken Reitz. Continuing his surprise show of power, Reitz hit his fourth homer in the last five games in the eighth. The round-tripper was the third baseman's seventh of the season, equalling his career high.
