White Sox 4, Orioles 2 at Chicago (night game):
A single by Ralph Garr with the bases loaded and two out in the seventh inning drove in two runs against Jim Palmer and gave the White Sox a 4-2 victory over the Orioles. With the score tied, 2-2, Royle Stillman drew a walk from Palmer with one away in the seventh. Chet Lemon doubled, Stillman stopping at third. After an intentional pass to Eric Soderholm, Palmer retired Jim Essian, but Garr then hit his single to beat the Orioles' ace.

Indians 6, Tigers 4 at Detroit (night game):
Mark Fidrych went down to his second straight loss since coming back from knee surgery when the Indians rapped last season's A. L. Rookie Pitcher of Year for 10 hits and five runs in six innings to defeat the Tigers, 6-4. Duane Kuiper tagged Fidrych for a pair of singles, knocking in three of the Indians' first four runs. Ray Fosse singled another run home in the sixth and, after Fidrych's departure, accounted for the Indians' last tally with a squeeze sacrifice bunt in the ninth.

Twins 4, Yankees 3 at Minnesota (night game):
A three-run rally in the ninth inning carried the Twins to a 4-3 victory over the Yankees. A homer by Chris Chambliss helped the Yankees take a 3-1 lead behind the pitching of Ron Guidry, who allowed only five hits going into the ninth. However, when Craig Kusick, Jerry Terrell and Butch Wynegar opened the stanza with singles to score a run, Guidry gave way to Sparky Lyle. The Yankee reliever retired two batters while walking one before Rod Carew came to the plate and singled, driving in the Twins' tying and winning runs.

A's 6, Mariners 3 at Seattle (night game):
Tony Armas batted in two runs with a triple in the second inning and Earl Williams added a pair with a homer in the sixth as the Athletics defeated the Mariners, 6-3. After his triple, Armas continued home on a bad relay to the plate by Dan Meyer. Marty Perez, who went 4-for-4, doubled to drive in the A's last counter in the ninth.

Red Sox 7, Rangers 5 at Texas (night game):
The Red Sox, after falling behind, 5-0, came back with the aid of two homers by Carl Yastrzemski to defeat the Rangers, 7-5. The Rangers scored all their runs off Luis Tiant in the third inning, with doubles by Bump Wills and Dave May each accounting for two RBIs. George Scott started the Red Sox comeback with a two-run double in the fourth and Carl Yastrzemski added a solo homer in the sixth. The Red Sox went ahead with a four-run outburst in the sixth, including a two-run double by Rick Burleson, before Yastrzemski capped their scoring with his second homer of the game in the seventh. Mike Paxton, who pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief of Tiant, received credit for his first major league victory.

Royals 11, Blue Jays 3 at Toronto (night game):
John Mayberry, who had hit only four homers in 41 previous games this season, broke loose with three circuit clouts as the Royals defeated the Blue Jays, 11-3. The big first baseman connected with a man on base in the fifth inning, added a solo shot in the seventh and then homered again with one aboard in the ninth to cap his slugging show. George Brett also homered and Al Cowens had five straight hits in the Royals' attack.

Reds 5, Braves 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Extending their winning streak to five games. the Reds defeated the Braves, 5-2, and moved up to the .500 mark (23-23) for the first time since they were 2-2 during the first week of the season. Pat Zachry ended a personal four-game losing streak with his first victory since April 27. The Reds took a 2-1 lead in the second inning on a single by Dan Driessen. After Jeff Burroughs tied the score with a homer in the third, the Reds went ahead to stay with a run in their half on singles by Pete Rose and Ken Griffey and infield out by Joe Morgan.

Dodgers 6, Astros 2 at Houston (night game):
The Dodgers snapped out of their four-game losing streak with a 6-2 victory over the Astros. Charlie Hough, in relief of winner Tommy John, pitched three shutout innings and picked up his 14th save of the season. The Dodgers took the lead with two runs in the third inning. After singles by Davey Lopes and Ted Martinez around a passed ball produced the first tally, Martinez stole second and scored on a single by Steve Garvey. Ron Cey accounted for a run with a double in the fifth and added two more with a single in the ninth before scoring himself on a single by John Hale.

Mets 6, Expos 4 at Montreal (night game):
John Stearns hit the first grand slam of his major league career to cap a five-run outburst in the fifth inning and power the Mets to a 6-4 victory over the Expos. Tom Seaver, with help from Skip Lockwood, gained his first victory since April 30, It was also was his first triumph in Montreal since October 3, 1972, after six previous tries that included three losses and three games without a decision. Seaver walked to open the fifth and was forced by Lenny Randle. Felix Millan and Dave Kingman followed with singles, driving in Randle. Ed Kranepool then walked to load the bases, setting the stage for Stearns' jackpot wallop.

Pirates 3, Phillies 0 at Philadelphia (night game):
Allowing only two hits, John Candelaria pitched the Pirates to a 3-0 victory over the Phillies in game a stopped by rain after 7½ innings. The Pirates, who snapped a five-game losing streak, counted all their runs off Larry Christenson after two out in the first. Dave Parker walked and scored on a triple by Al Oliver. After Bill Robinson was hit by a pitch, Parker came home on a single by Rennie Stennett. Bill Robinson then scored when a grounder by Ed Ott went through Larry Bowa for an error.

Giants 2, Padres 0 at San Francisco (day game):
Ed Halicki traveled the distance for the first time in 11 starts this season and pitched the Giants to a 2-0 victory over the Padres. The Giants broke up Halicki's duel with Bob Shirley by scoring a run in the sixth inning on singles by Rob Andrews, Derrel Thomas and Jack Clark. A double by Andrews and single by Thomas added the other run off Padre reliever Dan Spillner in the eighth.

Cubs 4, Cardinals 3 at St. Louis (night game):
Hitless in five previous trips, Jerry Morales singled in the 13th inning, moved up on a sacrifice by Mick Kelleher and scored on a single by Steve Ontiveros to bring the Cubs a 4-3 victory over the Cardinals. Bobby Murcer put the Cubs ahead, 3-2, with a two-run homer in the eighth, but the Cards sent the game into overtime with the tying run in the ninth on a double by Lou Brock and single by Ted Simmons. The Cubs used three pitchers, Rick Reuschel, Bruce Sutter and winner Willie Hernandez, who struck out 16 batters among them.
