Today's scores and summaries:
White Sox 7, Orioles 4 at Chicago (night game):
A bases-loaded double by Jim Essian drove in three of the White Sox' four runs in the third inning to nail down a 7-4 victory over the Orioles. After taking a 3-0 lead, the White Sox began the third with a single by Lamar Johnson and pass to Jim Spencer. Chet Lemon doubled, scoring Johnson. After Eric Soderholm walked, Essian cleared the sacks with his double.
Tigers 4, Indians 2 at Detroit (night game):
Catcher Milt May threw out four runners on attempted steals to help Dave Rozema gain the victory as the Tigers defeated the Indians, 4-2. Rozema gave up a homer by Ray Fosse in the eighth inning and then got a helping hand from Steve Foucault with one out in the ninth after Paul Dade singled to drive in the Indians' second run. Tito Fuentes hit his first homer of the season for the Tigers in the opening frame. Ben Oglivie doubled and scored on a single by Phil Mankowski in the fifth and Jason Thompson tripled home Rusty Staub in the sixth. Steve Kemp doubled for the Tigers' final tally in the eighth.
Yankees 10, Twins 3 at Minnesota (night game):
Used only sparingly this season, Lou Piniella went into the Yankees' lineup as their designated hitter and drove in three runs with a homer and sacrifice fly in a 10-3 victory over the Twins. Thurman Munson and Graig Nettles joined in the attack with two-run doubles. Ed Figueroa, pitching erratically, was lifted after 5 2/3 innings but received credit for his seventh victory. Rod Carew rapped a homer, double and two singles off Figueroa and boosted his league-leading average to .376. Sparky Lyle held the Twins hitless and retired Carew once in the last 3 1/3 innings.
A's 1, Mariners 0 at Seattle (night game):
Mike Norris made his first start since being recalled from San Jose (Pacific Coast) and pitched the Athletics to a 1-0 victory over the Mariners. Norris allowed only four hits and won a duel with Dick Pole, who gave up five hits, when Tony Armas singled in the fourth inning, advanced on an infield out by Marty Perez and scored on a double by Jim Tyrone.
Rangers 3, Red Sox 1 at Texas (night game):
After striking out three times, Willie Horton tagged Fergie Jenkins for a two-run double in the eighth inning to bring the Rangers a 3-1 victory over the Red Sox. Toby Harrah homered for the Rangers in the second and Bernie Carbo for the Red Sox in the seventh. Horton should have been retired in the eighth but got new life at the plate when Rick Burleson dropped his foul fly for an error. Given a second chance, Horton hit his double, driving in Juan Beniquez, who had singled, and Dave May, who had walked.
Astros 6, Reds 4 at Cincinnati (night game):
On the verge of being shut out, the Astros rallied for three tying runs on a homer by Bob Watson in the ninth inning and then erupted for three more runs in the 11th to defeat the Reds, 6-4. Watson singled with one out in the 11th and, after the second out, Enos Cabell also singled. Art Howe followed with his third straight double, driving in both runners, and scored himself on a single by Cliff Johnson. The Reds rallied for a run in their half on singles by George Foster, Dave Concepcion and Dan Driessen with none out, but Ken Forsch saved the game for the Astros, retiring Johnny Bench on a liner to Howe at second and inducing Cesar Geronimo to ground into a double play.
Mets 7, Expos 4 at Montreal (night game):
Lee Mazzilli hit his first homer of the season and a sacrifice fly, driving in three runs, and Felix Millan accounted for two RBIs with a pair of singles as the Mets defeated the Expos, 7-4. The victory was the Mets' third straight, all over the Expos, under Torre as their new manager.
