Today's scores and summaries:
Tigers 9, Angels 6 at California (night game):
After striking out in his first two tries against Nolan Ryan, Tim Corcoran tagged the Angels' fireballer for a three-run homer in the eighth inning to power the Tigers to a 9-6 victory. Corcoran came into the game in the second inning after Steve Kemp was hit on the right forearm by a Ryan fast ball. Bobby Bonds homered with a man on base for the Angels in the third. With the score tied, 6-6, Ron LeFlore reached second with one out on an error by Jerry Remy. Ryan struck out Tito Fuentes and then decided to pass Rust yStaub intentionally to get at Corcoran in a move that backfired on the Angels' ace. Ryan fanned 11, marking his 91st game with 10 or more strikeouts.
Yankees 8, White Sox 6 at Chicago (night game):
Batting twice, Reggie Jackson hit two doubles in the second inning when the Yankees erupted for seven runs to defeat the White Sox, 8-6. Jackson ignited the outburst with his first two-bagger and scored on singles by Graig Nettles and Roy White. With one out Bucky Dent singled to load the bases. A walk to Willie Randolph with two away forced in Nettles. Thurman Munson singled, driving in White and Dent. When Chet Lemon failed to field the ball cleanly in center field, Randolph also scored. Chris Chambliss then tripled and Jackson hit his second double to climax the explosion. The White Sox smashed four homers -- two by Lemon and one each by Richie Zisk and Oscar Gamble.
[DH] Orioles 5, Royals 4 (night game) / Royals 14, Orioles 13 at Kansas City (night game):
Winding up a wild game, the Royals scored on a sacrifice fly by Joe Zdeb in 10th inning to gain a 14-13 victory in a split of a twi-night doubleheader with the Orioles, who won the opener, 5-4. In the lidlifter, the Orioles counted twice on a bases-loaded single by Al Bumbry in the fifth inning and added their three other runs in the sixth when Pat Kelly and Tony Muser singled and Rick Dempsey homered. The Royals failed to catch up, although Al Cowens and Tom Poquette hit back-to-back triples in the eighth. In the nightcap, Cowens and John Mayberry hit three-run homers for the Royals, but five RBIs by Lee May, who hit a single and homer, and a two-run pinch-homer by Billy Smith helped the Orioles to tie the score at 11-11. After the Royals regained the lead at 13-11, the Orioles knotted the count in the ninth on a walk to Dempsey, double by Bumbry, a passed ball and sacrifice fly by Ken Singleton. However in 10th, Cowens singled, Hal McRae doubled and Mayberry drew an intentional pass to load the bases and set the stage for Zdeb's winning fly.
Red Sox 5, Twins 2 at Minnesota (day game):
Fred Lynn drove in two runs with a pair of singles and also made a spectacular catch in support of Bill Lee, who pitched the Red Sox to a 5-2 victory over the Twins. In the sixth inning, when Dan Ford smashed a drive more than 400 feet to center field, Lynn leaped high and grabbed the ball as it was about to go over the wall for a home run.
Blue Jays 4, A's 2 at Oakland (day game):
Two runs scored on a bases-loaded single by Otto Velez and another followed on an error as the Blue Jays rallied in the eighth inning to defeat the Athletics, 4-2. Dock Ellis, pitching with a 2-1 lead, was removed after the Blue Jays filled sacks with singles by Doug Ault and Dave McKay and a pass to John Scott. Joe Coleman, in relief, induced Bob Bailor to ground into a forceout at the plate. The A's then switched to Bob Lacey, who struck out Roy Howell, but Velez rapped his single, scoring McKay and Scott, and when Jim Tyrone let the ball get past him in right field, Bailor also crossed the plate.
Indians 7, Mariners 5 at Seattle (night game):
Frank Duffy hit his first homer of the season for the tie-breaking run in the eighth inning to lead the Indians to a 7-5 victory over the Mariners. Rick Manning had four hits and four RBIs for the Indians, including a homer with two men on base in the fourth. Carlos Lopez hit a two-run homer for the Mariners. After Duffy's drive broke a 5-5 tie, the Indians added an insurance run in the ninth on Paul Dade's third single of the game.
Brewers 3, Rangers 2 at Texas (night game):
Sixto Lezcano homered in the 10th inning to lift the Brewers to a 3-2 victory over the Rangers and hand Bert Blyleven his fifth straight defeat and the fourth in that losing streak by a margin of one run.
Braves 7, Giants 1 at Atlanta (night game):
A grand slam by Jeff Burroughs started the Braves off to a 7-1 victory over the Giants behind the six-hit pitching of Phil Niekro. Jerry Royster walked and Barry Bonnell and Willie Montanez singled to load the bases in the first inning before Burroughs belted his homer off John Curtis. The Giants' lone run came in the fourth on a circuit clout by Willie McCovey. The Braves added their final trio in the fifth with two runs being unearned on an error by Rob Andrews.
Astros 8, Reds 1 at Cincinnati (night game):

In the eighth, when the Dodgers clinched the outcome with four runs, Cey was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to pick up his third RBI of the game and 51st of the season.
Expos 8, Cardinals 7 at Montreal (night game):
After failing to hold a 7-4 lead, the Cardinals finally lost to the Expos in the 13th inning, 8-7. The Expos tied the score in the eighth. Gary Carter ignited the rally with his first homer since May 1. Del Unser walked and Larry Parrish singled. After a sacrifice by Tom Walker, Dave Cash drove in the tying pair with a single. Sparked by Jerry Morales, who tripled, the Cubs broke a 2-2 tie with two runs in the fourth inning and defeated the Pirates, 4-3. After his triple, Morales scored on a single by Manny Trillo. Following a sacrifice, Trillo counted what proved to be the winning run when Frank Taveras erred on a grounder by George Mitterwald. Mike Krukow was the Cubs' winner but was lifted in the sixth when the Pirates picked up their third run. Willie Hernandez and Bruce Sutter finished. Sutter received credit for his 15th save.
