Today's scores and summaries:

Blue Jays 6, Angels 3 at California (night game):
The Blue Jays hit only two fly balls off Paul Hartzell in 7 2/3 innings, but both were homers to help beat the Angels, 6-3. In the second inning, after the Blue Jays scored once when Alan Ashby was safe on an error, Doug Ault doubled and Dave McKay grounded out, John Scott hit a homer to make it 3-0. The Angels came back to tie the score, but Ron Fairly put the Blue Jays ahead to stay with a circuit clout in the eighth. McKay hit another homer off reliever Dave LaRoche in the ninth when the Blue Jays insured their victory with the final two runs.

Royals 5, Red Sox 4 at Kansas City (night game):
A two-run rally in the ninth inning brought the Royals a 5-4 victory over the Red Sox. Al Cowens singled to open the stanza, Amos Otis walked and both moved up on a sacrifice by Darrell Porter. After an intentional pass to Cookie Rojas, George Scott booted a grounder by John Wathan, allowing the tying run to score. Joe Zdeb followed with the game-winning single.

Brewers 7, Orioles 6 at Milwaukee (night game):
Sixto Lezcano tripled in the ninth inning and scored with two out on a wild pitch by Tippy Martinez to give the Brewers a 7-6 victory over the Orioles. Cecil Cooper drove in two runs with a double and Sal Bando accounted for one with another double before the Orioles counted four times in the seventh to take a 6-5 lead. Bando tied the score with a homer in the Brewers' half.

Twins 6, White Sox 5 at Minnesota (night game):
A wild throw by Alan Bannister with two out in the 11th inning resulted in the Twins defeating the White Sox, 6-5. Glenn Adams hit a two-run homer for the Twins and Jorge Orta had a similar blow for the White Sox as a pinch-hitter. The White Sox took a 5-4 lead in the top of the ninth on a solo swat by Jim Spencer, but the Twins tied the score in their half with a walk, single by Roy Smalley and sacrifice fly by Rod Carew. In the 11th, Jerry Terrell beat out an infield hit, advanced to second on a sacrifice by Smalley and stole third. After Lyman Bostock fanned for the second out, Willie Norwood grounded to Bannister and when the shortstop's throw hit the dirt and eluded first baseman Spencer, Terrell scored the winning run.

Tigers 5, Mariners 2 at Seattle (night game):
Jason Thompson hit a homer and double, batting in two runs, and Tom Veryzer accounted for two more with a triple as the Tigers defeated the Mariners, 5-2. Ben Oglivie homered for the Tigers' other tally. Dave Rozema had a shutout in his grasp until the ninth inning when the rookie weakened and left the game with the bases loaded. The Mariners then scored their runs on a grounder by Dan Meyer and double by Bob Stinson before Steve Foucault retired the side.

Rangers 7, Yankees 3 at Texas (night game):
A fluke double by Willie Horton on a ball that center fielder Mickey Rivers apparently lost in the lights triggered a five-run rally that enabled the Rangers to defeat the Yankees, 7-3. Two were out in the fourth inning when Horton's fly fell about 20 feet to the left of Rivers, allowing two runs to score. Toby Harrah followed with a homer for two more runs. Mike Hargrove and Tom Grieve then hit doubles for the fifth run of the frame.

Cubs 10, Dodgers 4 at Chicago (day game):
The hitting of Manny Trillo, Dave Rosello and Ray Burris paced the Cubs to a 10-4 victory over the Dodgers, who suffered their seventh defeat in the last 10 games. Trillo had three hits in three official trips, boosting his league-leading average to .380. Trillo and Rosello each drove in three runs, while Burris helped himself with a two-run single as the Cubs built up a 10-0 lead. The Dodgers had a homer by Steve Garvey while counting three times in the seventh. Paul Reuschel replaced Burris in the ninth and gave up the Dodgers' final run before Bruce Sutter came in to strike out the last two batters.

Mets 8, Reds 0 at New York (night game):
Continuing their phenomenal turnabout, the Mets posted their seventh victory in eight games under Joe Torre as new manager when Tom Seaver pitched a five-hitter and shut out the Reds, 8-0. Seaver struck out 10 to raise his career total to 2,400 and move ahead of Sandy Koufax into 13th place on the all-time list. Lee Mazzilli, who had three singles, drove in three runs. Seaver helped give himself elbow room with two RBIs on a sacrifice fly and single.

Phillies 9, Astros 8 at Philadelphia (night game):
A two-run homer by Mike Schmidt in the first inning and three-run drive by Greg Luzinski in the sixth helped the Phillies outslug the Astros, 9-8. The Astros had a solo swat by Cesar Cedeno in the first, a two-run blow by Art Howe in the second and another two-run smash by Julio Gonzalez in the fourth while taking a 7-4 lead. In the sixth, the Phillies loaded the bases on two walks and an error. After Ted Sizemore batted in two runs with a single, Luzinski hit his homer.

Giants 7, Pirates 6 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Bill Madlock and Darrell Evans drove in three runs apiece to lead the Giants' attack in a 7-6 victory over the Pirates. Madlock accounted for his RBIs with two of his three singles, while Evans hit a sacrifice fly, double and single. Gary Thomasson batted in the Giants' other run with a double. Willie Stargell homered for the Pirates to ignite a five-run rally in the seventh. Three doubles and a triple by Phil Garner figured in the outburst before Randy Moffitt saved the game.

Padres 9, Cardinals 5 at St. Louis (night game):
Taking advantage of three errors, the Padres scored five unearned runs to defeat the Cardinals, 9-5. Neither starter, Larry Dierker for the Cards and John D'Acquisto for the Padres, retired a batter in the first inning. Dierker hurt his shoulder after giving up a triple by Gene Richards and double by Bill Almon. Buddy Schultz relieved and retired Mike Ivie, but Dave Winfield rapped a two-run homer. D'Acquisto was wild, walking Ted Simmons with the bases loaded before departing. After Paul Siebert took over, Keith Hernandez hit a sacrifice fly. The Padres scored four runs in the fifth, three of them tainted on errors by Mike Tyson and John Urrea. A wild throw by Don Kessinger resulted in two more unearned runs in the ninth. Bob Owchinko, in relief, received credit for his first major league victory, while Rollie Fingers picked up his 14th save.
