Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 6, Brewers 0 at Baltimore (night game):
Andres Mora and Al Bumbry each homered with a man on base in the second inning and that was more than enough runs for Rudy May to pitch the Orioles to a 6-0 victory over the Brewers. Mora homered after a single by Doug DeCinces and Bumbry's blow followed a single by Rick Dempsey.
White Sox 7, Red Sox 3 at Boston (night game):
Doubles by Lamar Johnson and Kevin Bell and a single by Jim Essian drove in five runs in the seventh inning and carried the White Sox to a 7-3 victory over the Red Sox, who were stopped on their six-game winning streak. With the score tied, 2-2, Jorge Orta was safe on an error, Richie Zisk walked and Johnson doubled for one run. After an intentional pass to Eric Soderholm, Bell hit his double, driving in two runs, and Essian singled to produce another pair.
Tigers 4, Blue Jays 1 at Detroit (night game):
Ron LeFlore celebrated his 27th birthday by hitting two homers to help Mark Fidrych post his third straight victory as the Tigers defeated the Blue Jays, 4-1. LeFlore banged his first homer of the game in the third inning. After the Blue Jays counted in the fifth on a double by Al Woods and single by Dave McKay, LeFlore homered again in the Tigers' half. Steve Kemp then supplied two insurance runs with a circuit clout in the eighth.
Twins 7, Angels 6 at Minnesota (night game):
Although Nolan Ryan struck out 14 batters, the Twins were able to defeat the Angels' ace, 7-6. The Twins tagged Ryan for four runs in the second inning, but the Angels came back with a four-run rally in the third and took a 5-4 lead in the fifth. The Twins forged in front in their half of the fifth with a homer by Larry Hisle, triple by Rod Carew and single by Lyman Bostock, but the Angels tied the score in the eighth on a triple by Bobby Bonds and a wild pitch. However in the ninth, Ryan walked Butch Wynegar and Mike Cubbage with one out. After Hisle flied out, Rob Wilfong came through with the game-winning single.
Yankees 7, Royals 0 at New York (night game):
Ron Guidry, who had to be relieved in the ninth inning in each of the Yankee rookie's four previous victories, breezed through the route and shut out the Royals, 7-0. Guidry allowed only three hits and at one stretch retired 17 straight batters. Mickey Rivers led the Yankees at bat with three hits, including a two-run homer. Chris Chambliss also batted in two runs.
Mariners 3, A's 1 at Seattle (day game):
Facing his former club, Glenn Abbott yielded only five hits and pitched the Mariners to a 3-1 victory over the Athletics. The complete game was Abbott's first since 1975. Bob Stinson drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single in the second inning to start the Mariners' scoring. After an error resulted in the A's run in the third, Dan Meyer homered for the Mariners in the fourth.
Dodgers 3, Pirates 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
Bill Russell, whose ninth-inning error allowed the Pirates to tie the score, made amends with a double in the 11th to set up the run that won the game for the Dodgers, 3-2. Reggie Smith homered in the sixth for the Dodgers' first two tallies. The Pirates rallied in the ninth, scoring their initial run on a double by Bill Robinson and single by newly acquired Jim Fregosi. Duffy Dyer followed with a single. After the next two batters were retired, Russell booted a grounder by pinch-hitter Bobby Tolan, allowing the tying tally to score. Russell's double in the 11th was followed by a pass to Smith. Ron Cey sacrificed. The Pirates then walked Steve Garvey intentionally, but the move failed when Dusty Baker hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Russell with the winning run.
Mets 4, Astros 3 at New York (night game):
A pair of errors in the ninth inning enabled the Mets to score two unearned runs and defeat the Astros, 4-3. Ed Kranepool was safe on a miscue by first baseman Bob Watson to start the stanza. Steve Henderson, making his first appearance with the Mets following a deal with Reds, ran for Kranepool. With two out, Felix Millan singled. Pinch-hitter Mike Vail then grounded to Julio Gonzalez and when the shortstop threw wildly to second base trying for a forceout, both Henderson and Millan scored on the error.
Padres 8, Cubs 6 at San Diego (night game):
The Cubs stopped themselves on their six-game winning streak by committing three errors in the first inning to start the Padres off to an 8-6 victory. Ivan DeJesus booted two grounders and Steve Ontiveros made a wild throw to allow the Padres to score three unearned runs. The Padres' subsequent scoring included homers by George Hendrick and Gene Tenace, while the Cubs had round-trippers by Manny Trillo and Steve Swisher.
Giants 5, Cardinals 1 at San Francisco (day game):
Jim Barr pitched the Giants to a 5-1 victory and continued his career mastery of the Cardinals, whom he defeated for the ninth time in 12 decisions. The veteran righthander held the Cards scoreless until the ninth inning when Hector Cruz and Ted Simmons hit back-to-back doubles. Terry Whitfield had a homer, double and single for the Giants, while Darrell Evans drove in two runs with a double and infield out.
