Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 9, Yankees 4 at Boston (night game):
The Red Sox smashed four homers off Catfish Hunter in the first inning and tagged Dick Tidrow for two more in the seventh to slug the Yankees into defeat, 9-4. Rick Burleson and Frd Lynn began the bombardment of Hunter and, after two were out, Carlton Fisk and George Scott connected for the circuit. Fisk's homer was the 100th of his career. In the seventh, Jim Rice singled and Carl Yastrzemski and Fisk followed with homers. The trio of back-to-back blows marked the 8th, 9th and 10th times the Red Sox had achieved that feat this season.

Indians 8, Tigers 5 at Cleveland (night game):
Andre Thornton hammered his second homer of the game, connecting with two men on base in the 12th inning, to power the Indians to an 8-5 victory over the Tigers before a Beer Night crowd of 21,452 that included President Jimmy Carter's brother, Billy.

Royals 7, Twins 1 at Kansas City (night game):
The Royals set a club record for doubles in one game, hitting seven while defeating the Twins, 7-1. Al Cowens contributed two doubles to the attack, while Amos Otis, Darrell Porter, Fred Patek, Hal McRae and Tom Poquette hit one apiece.

Angels 7, Brewers 5 at Milwaukee (night game):
Joe Rudi doubled in the 10th inning for his fourth hit of the game, sparking the Angels to a 7-5 victory over the Brewers. After rapping his double, Rudi scored the tie-breaking run on a single by Dave Chalk, who advanced to second on the throw home. Bobby Bonds followed with a double to drive in the extra tally.

[DH] Mariners 2, Rangers 1 (night game) / Rangers 8, Mariners 6 at Texas (night game):
The Mariners rallied for two runs in the ninth inning to win the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, 2-1, but the Rangers took advantage of four unearned runs in the first inning of the second game to gain an 8-6 victory, In the opener, the Rangers held a 1-0 lead going into the ninth when Doyle Alexander was removed after walking Bob Stinson. Mike Marshall failed in relief. After Craig Reynolds sacrificed, Jose Baez singled to score pinch-runner Larry Milbourne. Baez took second when Ranger catcher Jim Sundberg muffed the throw from the outfield and counted the Mariners' winning run on a single by Steve Braun. Playing shortstop in the second game, Milbourne muffed a grounder by Juan Beniquez, opening the way for the Rangers' four-run inning. Dave May batted in one run with a double and Jim Mason two with a single. May made it three RBIs for the game with a two-run single in the second and Mason accounted for his third RBI with a sacrifice fly in the third.

Orioles 5, Blue Jays 3 at Toronto (night game):
A hard slide home by Lee May, who knocked the ball out of catcher Alan Ashby's glove, made it possible for the Orioles to defeat the Blue Jays, 5-3. The Orioles had a homer by Ken Singleton in taking a 2-0 lead, but the Blue Jays slugged their way ahead in the fourth with circuit clouts by Al Woods, Doug Rader and Ron Fairly, marking the first three-homer inning in the expansion club's history. May started the Orioles' sixth with a single and took third on a single by Eddie Murray. With one out, Doug DeCinces tapped to third baseman Roy Howell, who threw home, but May was safe on his slide. Ashby was charged with an error. Murray then scored on a sacrifice fly by Rick Dempsey. Pat Kelly added an insurance tally with a homer in the eighth.

Cubs 7, Dodgers 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
Manny Trillo, the league's leading batter, tripled and drove in the first two of the Cubs' four runs in a ninth-inning outburst that produced a 7-3 victory over the Dodgers. Bobby Murcer homered for the Cubs and Steve Garvey for the Dodgers, each with a man on base, to help forge a 3-3 tie before the Cubs broke away in the ninth. After Trillo's triple broke the deadlock, George Mitterwald doubled and Ivan DeJesus singled for two insurance runs.

Reds 9, Expos 4 at Montreal (night game):
George Foster cracked a three-run homer in the fifth inning and added a solo swat in the ninth to close out the Reds' scoring in a 9-4 victory over the Expos. After Foster's smash in the fifth produced a 4-3 lead, the Reds erupted for four runs in the sixth, two scoring on a triple by Pete Rose.

Astros 7, Mets 1 at New York (night game):
Pat Zachry, making his debut with the Mets after being obtained from the Reds, failed to pitch over an error by Lenny Randle in the fifth inning and wound up being charged with a 7-1 loss to the Astros. A pass to Enos Cabell and double by Jose Cruz produced the only earned run off Zachry in the third. With two out in the fifth, Cabell doubled and Cruz was passed intentionally. Randle then bobbled a grounder by Joe Ferguson to load the bases. Bob Watson singled, driving in two runs, and Art Howe followed with a single to bat in another tally. Cabell capped the Astros' scoring by smashing a three-run homer off reliever Rick Baldwin in the eighth.

Phillies 11, Braves 5 at Philadelphia (night game):
Two homers by Richie Hebner and one each by Greg Luzinski and Mike Schmidt produced nine runs and powered the Phillies to an 11-5 victory over the Braves, who had a pair of two-run blows by Jeff Burroughs. Hebner started the slugging with a solo shot in the second inning. Luzinski's homer followed a double by Jay Johnstone and pass to Schmidt in the third. Hebner's second swat of the game came with two men on base in the seventh. Schmidt joined in the attack with a two-run drive in the eighth.

Padres 4, Cardinals 3 at San Diego (night game):
Climaxing a four-run rally by the Padres in the fourth inning, pinch-hitter Jerry Turner homered with two men on base to beat the Cardinals, 4-3. The Cardinals held a 3-0 lead with the aid of a two-run double by Mike Tyson before the Padres began their comeback with one-out singles by George Hendrick and Bill Almon. Hendrick took third on Almon's hit and an error by Jerry Mumphrey and scored when Mike Champion grounded into a forceout. Bob Davis walked. Turner then batted for John D'Acquisto and came through with his homer off John Denny for the winning blow.

Giants 4, Pirates 3 at San Francisco (night game):
A wild pickoff throw by Jerry Reuss resulted in the Giants scoring their deciding run in a 4-3 victory over the Pirates. A single by Rennie Stennett, triple by Dave Parker and single by Bill Robinson gave the Pirates a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning, but the Giants tied the score with back-to-back homers by Bill Madlock and Jack Clark in the sixth. Pinch-hitter Larry Herndon tripled in the seventh and scored when Stennett threw wildly on the relay from the outfield. That run, however, became earned when Rob Andrews singled. Reuss then made a wild throw on a pickoff attempt. Andrews took third on the error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Derrel Thomas. The Pirates rallied in the ninth but fell short with one run.
