Today's scores and summaries:

Blue Jays 5, Orioles 4 at Baltimore (night game):
After striking out twice and hitting into a double play in his previous trips, Roy Howell singled in the ninth inning, scoring Alan Ashby, to bring the Blue Jays a 5-4 victory over the Orioles. Ron Fairly hit a two-run homer in the second and Otto Velez doubled two runs across in the third to give the Blue Jays a 4-0 lead, but the Orioles tied the score in the seventh with a single by Eddie Murray and two-run homer by pinch-hitter Andres Mora. In the ninth, Ashby singled and Steve Bowling sacrificed. After an intentional pass to Bob Bailor, Howell dropped a single into short left field.

Rangers 1, Angels 0 at California (night game):
The Angels failed to score for Frank Tanana for the third time this season and the ace southpaw wound up losing to the Rangers, 1-0, when Ken Henderson hit a homer with two out in the 10th inning. Tanana gave up five hits, the same number that the Angels collected off Gaylord Perry and Adrian Devine. Perry pitched eight innings and struck out 10 before yielding the mound to Devine. Tanana fanned nine while hurling the route for the 12th straight time.

Indians 4, Tigers 2 at Detroit (night game):
In a one-man batting show, Andre Thornton drove in all of the Indians' runs with two homers and a sacrifice fly to beat the Tigers, 4-2. The Tigers scored their runs on round-trippers by Steve Kemp and Phil Mankowski.

Brewers 7, Mariners 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
Lary Sorensen, who was brought up by the Brewers from Spokane (Pacific Coast) June 7, posted his first major league victory, pitching a four-hitter and defeating the Mariners, 7-1. Sal Bando supported the rookie by driving in three runs, including two with a homer in the third inning. Don Money also backed Sorensen with his defensive work, setting an A. L. record for most assists in a game by a second baseman with 12.

Twins 7, White Sox 6 at Minnesota (night game):
While Larry Hisle provided the most power, driving in five runs with a double and homer, the Twins also had circuit clouts by Craig Kusick and Lyman Bostock to defeat the White Sox 7-6. Hisle drove in two runs with his double in the first inning and three with his homer in the second, raising his league-leading RBI total to 70. Kusick's clout came in the fifth. The White Sox, who had homers by Oscar Gamble, Jim Essian and Lamar Johnson, rallied to tie the score at 6-6 before Bostock's belt in the eighth decided the game in the Twins' favor.

Yankees 6, Red Sox 5 at New York (night game):
The Red Sox smashed three more homers, setting a major league record with 33 in 10 consecutive contests, but their seven-game winning streak was snapped by the Yankees, 6-5, in 11 innings. Carl Yastrzemski tagged Catfish Hunter for a solo shot and Butch Hobson followed with a two-run blow to give the Red Sox a 3-1 lead in the second inning, but the Yankees showed power of their own with a two-run smash by Paul Blair in the home half. George Scott put the Red Sox ahead again with a two-run wallop in the fourth. One out away from defeat, the Yankees tied the score against Bill Campbell in the ninth when Willie Randolph tripled and Roy White homered. In the 11th, Graig Nettles walked and took second on a balk by Ramon Hernandez. After an intentional pass to Mickey Rivers, Reggie Jackson delivered the winning single.

Royals 3, A's 0 at Oakland (night game):
Dennis Leonard allowed only three hits and struck out 11 while pitching the Royals to a 3-0 victory over the Athletics. The Royals tagged Doc Medich for all their runs in the sixth inning on a single by Hal McRae and successive homers by George Brett and John Mayberry.

Braves 9, Padres 8 at Atlanta (night game):
After coming from behind with three runs to tie the score in the ninth inning, the Braves rallied for three more in the 10th to defeat the Padres, 9-8. The Braves forced the game into overtime in the ninth when Willie Montanez batted in two runs with a double and Junior Moore followed with a single to drive in the tying tally. The Padres went ahead again with two runs in the 10th, one scoring on a single by Bill Almon and the other crossing the plate on a bases-loaded pass to George Hendrick. In the Braves' half, Darrel Chaney singled and Vic Correll knotted the count with a homer. With one out, Gary Matthews singled and stole second. After Tom Paciorek struck out, Jeff Burroughs was passed intentionally, bringing up Moore, who doubled for his third hit of the game to drive in the winning run.

Cubs 5, Mets 0 at Chicago (day game):
Jerry Morales hit a single, double and triple, driving in two runs and scoring two, to lead the Cubs' attack in a 5-0 victory over the Mets. Rick Reuschel won his 10th game with the aid of a perfect relief performance by Willie Hernandez, who came in with two men on base and two out in the sixth inning and retired the last 10 batters. The fate of Jerry Koosman, who started for the Mets, was decided in the first inning when Bill Buckner doubled, Bobby Murcer walked and Morales tripled.

Dodgers 3, Reds 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
With a crowd of 51,864 on hand, Tom Seaver's first appearance at Riverfront Stadium in a Cincinnati uniform was spoiled by the Dodgers, who defeated the Reds, 3-2. Admittedly nervous, Seaver gave up two runs in the first inning on a walk to Davey Lopes, single by Bill Russell, an infield out that advanced the runners and a single by Steve Garvey. Seaver checked the Dodgers on one hit through the next four frames before giving up what proved to be the deciding run in the sixth on a single by Russell, pass to Reggie Smith and single by Rick Monday. The Reds' runs off Tommy John came in the seventh when Ken Griffey singled and Joe Morgan homered. John gave up a total of 10 hits but had the support of four double plays.

Astros 6, Giants 5 at Houston (night game):
Kept alive by Bob Watson, who hit for the cycle for the first time in his 11-year major league career, the Astros finally were able to defeat the Giants, 6-5, in 11 innings. Watson knocked in three runs with a triple in the first inning. After adding a double in the third, Watson homered to tie the score at 4-4 in the fifth and drove in another run to fashion a 5-5 deadlock with a single in the eighth. Wilbur Howard walked with one out in the 11th, Enos Cabell singled and Jose Cruz, hitless in five previous trips, ended the game with a double off the right-center field wall.

Pirates 6, Expos 5 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Bill Robinson, who broke up a no-hit bid by Wayne Twitchell with a single in the eighth inning, touching off a four-run rally by the Pirates, singled again off reliever Joe Kerrigan in the 10th and drove in a run to beat the Expos, 6-5. Twitchell had a 5-0 lead and a perfect game in the works before Robinson singled. Al Oliver followed with a homer. When Ed Ott singled, Twitchell gave way to Will McEnaney. Two singles then loaded the bases and Kerrigan, following McEnaney to the mound, walked Dave Parker to force in the Pirates' fourth run. With two out in the ninth, the Pirates tied the score with singles by Willie Stargell, Ott and Bobby Tolan. Robinson's winning single in the 10th came after a double by Phil Garner and intentional pass to Parker and made a winner out of Rich Gossage.

Cardinals 7, Phillies 1 at St. Louis (night game):
A five-run attack against Jim Lonborg in the first inning started the Cardinals off to a 7-1 victory over the Phillies. Eric Rasmussen, who lost his bid for a shutout on an unearned run in the ninth, held the Phillies to five hits. Lou Brock walked to lead off the game for the Cards, stole second and scored on a single by Garry Templeton. After Tony Scott singled, Templeton and Scott worked a double steal. Following an intentional pass to Ted Simmons, Keith Hernandez singled, driving in two runs. Ken Reitz singled to reload the sacks and Mike Tyson climaxed the inning with a single, adding two runs.
