Today's scores and summaries:

Royals 3, Angels 1 at California (night game):
Dennis Leonard yielded only two hits in a duel with Frank Tanana and pitched the Royals to a 3-1 victory over the Angels. Tony Solaita singled in the second inning for the Angels' first hit and Rusty Torres homered in the sixth for their second hit and only run. The Royals came to Leonard's rescue with two runs in the eighth. John Mayberry singled and gave way to pinch-runner Dave Nelson, who scored on a triple by Amos Otis. Buck Martinez followed with a double for the go-ahead run. Hal McRae iced the decision with a homer in the ninth.

White Sox 10, Mariners 4 at Chicago (night game):
Homers by Lamar Johnson, Jorge Orta and Richie Zisk helped the White Sox defeat the Mariners, 10-4. Johnson's homer followed a pass to Chet Lemon in the third inning. Orta connected after Jim Essian walked in the fourth and Zisk hit for the circuit with the bases empty in the fifth.

Tigers 3, Red Sox 2 at Detroit (night game):
The Red Sox, who had gone three games without hitting a homer, resumed their slugging with two round-trippers but still lost to the Tigers, 3-2, for their fifth straight defeat. Fred Lynn homered in the first inning and Carl Yastrzemski in the fourth to give the Red Sox a 2-0 lead. The Tigers rallied to tie the score and then put over the winning run in the ninth when Phil Mankowski singled, Chuck Scrivener sacrificed and Ron LeFlore singled for his third hit of the game.

Twins 8, Brewers 3 at Minnesota (night game):
Rod Carew was held to one single, dropping his average to .407, but the Twins' star hit safely in his 10th straight game to mark an 8-3 victory over the Brewers. Paul Thormodsgard held the Brewers to seven hits and did not issue a pass while hurling the route. Carew hit a sacrifice fly to produce one of the Twins' two runs in the first inning. Dan Ford and Glenn Adams each accounted for two RBIs. Steve Brye homered for the Brewers.

A's 6, Rangers 5 at Oakland (night game):
Playing their first game under Billy Hunter as new manager, the Rangers were defeated, 6-5, when the Athletics rallied for two runs in the ninth inning. A homer by Bert Campaneris in the eighth put the Rangers ahead, 5-4, but the A's came back in the ninth with a single by Manny Sanguillen, balk by Adrian Devine, single by Wayne Gross, sacrifice by Tony Armas and single by Willie Crawford.

[DH] Blue Jays 8, Yankees 5 (night game) / Yankees 5, Blue Jays 1 at Toronto (night game):
The Yankees, who lost the opener of a twi-night doubleheader, 8-5, came back with a four-run outburst in the 11th inning to defeat the Blue Jays in the nightcap, 5-1. Ron Fairly smashed a two-run homer for the Blue Jays in the first game. After the Yankees took a 4-3 lead, the Blue Jays put over four runs in the seventh. Ernie Whitt doubled, advanced on a bunt and scored on a sacrifice fly by Hector Torres that Reggie Jackson dropped in right field. Torres reached second on the error. Bob Bailor and Al Woods followed with singles, Torres scoring, and Doug Ault then drove in two runs with a pinch-single. Fairly hit his second homer of the night to account for the Blue Jays' run in the second game. The Yankees tied the score with doubles by Cliff Johnson and Jackson in the sixth. In the 11th, singles by Roy White and Chris Chambliss, a sacrifice and infield hit by Mickey Rivers produced the tie-breaking tally. Graig Nettles followed with a double, driving in two runs, and scored himself when Dave McKay made a wild throw on the relay from the outfield.

Dodgers 3, Braves 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Pinch-hitting in the ninth inning, Ed Goodson came through with his first homer of the season to give the Dodgers a 3-2 victory over the Braves. Ron Cey batted in the Dodgers' initial run with a sacrifice fly in the first. The Braves took the lead in the second with a pass to Jeff Burroughs, triple by Gary Matthews and infield out by Rod Gilbreath, but two errors by Jerry Royster and a double by Dusty Baker enabled the Dodgers to tie the score with an unearned run in the eighth.

Reds 11, Giants 4 at Cincinnati (night game):
Johnny Bench and Ken Griffey batted in nine runs between them and Doug Capilla, recently acquired from the Cardinals, gained a victory in his first major league start when the Reds defeated the Giants, 11-4. Bench accounted for five RBIs with a sacrifice fly, homer and two doubles, while Griffey hit a triple and homer to produce four runs.

Astros 5, Padres 1 at Houston (night game):
Bob Watson and Enos Cabell each batted in two runs to enable Joaquin Andujar to pitch the Astros to a 5-1 victory over the Padres. Andujar had not beaten the Padres previously, losing to them three times last year and once this season. Cabell accounted for his RBIs with a homer while Watson batted in his pair with an infield out and double.

Cubs 4, Expos 2 at Montreal (night game):
The streaking Cubs scored twice in the 10th inning and defeated the Expos, 4-2, for their eighth victory in a row. Mick Kelleher batted in a run with a single in the second and Jerry Morales homered in the fourth to give the Cubs a 2-0 lead, but the Expos tied the score in the eighth when Andre Dawson singled and Wayne Garrett hit for the circuit. In the 10th, Steve Ontiveros singled, Steve Swisher bunted and when Will McEnaney made a late throw to second, both runners were safe. Kelleher followed with a single to load the bases. Gene Clines hit a sacrifice fly to deep center field for the tie-breaking tally and Greg Gross hit another sacrifice fly to deep left field for an insurance marker.

Phillies 3, Mets 1 at New York (night game):
Greg Luzinski hit a double and homer, driving in two runs, and Bake McBride accounted for the Phillies' other run with a round-tripper in a 3-1 victory over the Mets.

[DH] Cardinals 6, Pirates 1 (night game) / Cardinals 13, Pirates 3 at St. Louis (night game):
Buddy Schultz, recalled from New Orleans (American Association), and Tom Underwood, obtained from the Phillies, emerged with victories for the Cardinals in a twi-night doubleheader with the Pirates. Schultz, making his first major league start, pitched 7 1/3 innings before pulling a muscle in his thigh and won the first game, 6-1. Underwood, working six innings, was a 13-3 winner in the second game. Schultz got off to a shaky start, giving up four hits for a run in the first inning, but the lefthander allowed only one more safety before leaving the game. Mike Tyson drove in two runs for the Cardinals with a single and sacrifice fly. In the nightcap, Ken Reitz hit two homers, including his second grand slam of the season, plus a single, and batted in eight runs. After the Cardinals had manhandled Grant Jackson, who was the victim of Reitz' jackpot wallop in the fourth inning, manager Chuck Tanner of the Pirates called on infielder Mario Mendoza for his first pitching appearance in the major leagues. Mendoza gave up a three-run homer by Reitz in the eighth.
