Today's scores and summaries:
Angels 7, Royals 0 at California (night game):
Marking his 96th game with 10 or more strikeouts, Nolan Ryan fanned 12 while pitching the Angels to a 7-0 victory over the Royals. Thad Bosley, called up from Salt Lake City (Pacific Coast) to replace injured Joe Rudi, made his debut in center field and cracked a triple and single, driving in three runs. Tony Solaita contributed a homer with a man on base.
Mariners 3, White Sox 1 at Chicago (night game):
Tom House made his first A. L. start, pitched seven innings and gained the victory when the Mariners defeated the White Sox, 3-1. Enrique Romo hurled the last two frames. House had previously started only one other game in the majors with the Braves in the N. L. in 1971. Jim Spencer homered for the White Sox run in the fifth inning, but the Mariners rallied against Wilbur Wood in the eighth. Carlos Lopez bunted safely, Skip Jutze beat out an infield hit and Leroy Stanton doubled to drive in the tying tally. Dave Collins followed with a single, scoring both Jutze and pinch-runner Larry Milbourne, for the game-winning hit.
[DH] Indians 11, Orioles 8 (night game) / Orioles 5, Indians 3 at Cleveland (night game):
Rico Carty drove in five runs with a homer, double and single to pace the Indians to an 11-8 victory in the first game of a twi-night doubleheader before the batting of Eddie Murray helped the Orioles win the second game, 5-3, in 11 innings. In the lidlifter, Carty sparked a five-run rally by the Indians in the third inning with a double that accounted for two RBIs. Carty whacked his homer in the fourth and left the game for a pinch-runner after hitting a two-run single in the fifth. In the nightcap, Murray batted in the Orioles' first two runs with a single and homer. In the 11th, Murray doubled and Tony Muser walked. Doug DeCinces singled, driving in Murray with the tie-breaking run. Muser was out at the plate when Mark Belanger missed the pitch on an attempted squeeze bunt, but DeCinces moved up on the play and scored when Belanger singled.
Tigers 7, Red Sox 2 at Detroit (night game):
Attracted by Mark Fidrych's turn to pitch, the Tigers' largest crowd of the season, 51,745, turned out to watch The Bird beat the Red Sox, 7-2, for his sixth straight victory. The Tigers got to Bill Lee for two runs in the second inning on a walk to Steve Kemp, double by Jason Thompson and a pair of infield outs. Two more runs followed in the third on singles by Ron LeFlore and Tito Fuentes, a forceout, error and single by Thompson. Getting his third hit of the game, Thompson homered with a man on base in the eighth. In his only shaky stanza, Fidrych gave up the Red Sox runs in the seventh on a homer by Butch Hobson, pass to Denny Doyle and singles by Rick Burleson and Fred Lynn.
Brewers 1, Twins 0 at Minnesota (night game):
A triple by Cecil Cooper in the fourth inning and sacrifice fly by Sal Bando enabled the Brewers to defeat the Twins, 1-0. Lary Sorensen and two relievers, Bob McClure and Bill Castro, combined to post the shutout. Sorensen was lifted with a man on base in the ninth. McClure retired one batter before yielding to Castro, who recorded the last two outs. Rod Carew had a single, double and two walks in four trips for the Twins and raised his batting average to .411.
[DH] Rangers 4, A's 0 (night game) / A's 4, Rangers 1 at Oakland (night game):
After 38-year-old Gaylrod Perry pitched the Rangers to a 4-0 victory in the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, the Athletics won the second game, 4-1, behind 25-year-old rookie Rick Langford. Perry doled out six hits in posting the 47th shutout of his career. The Rangers got only five hits off Mike Norris, including a homer by Juan Beniquez. Langford scattered seven hits and might have matched Perry's shutout except that an error by Rob Picciolo led to a Ranger unearned run in the second inning.
Dodgers 13, Braves 7 at Atlanta (night game):
Hitless in two previous games, Steve Garvey broke loose with a 4-for-4 night, including two homers, as the Dodgers defeated the Braves, 13-7. Don Sutton, who pitched seven innings, drove in three runs with a double and single, while Bill Russell also accounted for three RBIs with a homer. Gary Matthews hit a home run and single to produce three runs for the Braves.
Reds 5, Giants 4 at Cincinnati (night game):
Ken Griffey scored on a wild pitch by John Curtis in the 11th inning, bringing the Reds a 5-4 victory over the Giants. Riverfront Stadium continued to jinx Tom Seaver. The former Met had not won in Cincinnati since June 18, 1972, and lost his first start at home with the Reds June 24. This time, Seaver was handed a 4-2 lead on a three-run homer by Dan Driessen, but he was removed for a pinch-hitter in the eighth after the Giants rallied to tie the score. In the 11th, the Reds loaded the bases with passes to Pete Rose and Joe Morgan around a single by Griffey. Facing Driessen, Curtis threw low past Mike Sadek, but the catcher retrieved the ball and Rose was out at the plate. However, with a count of 3-and-1 on Driessen, Curtis uncorked a wilder pitch on his next delivery and Griffey raced home to score.
Padres 7, Astros 4 at Houston (night game):
Breaking out of an 0-for-24 slump, Mike Ivie collected three singles and drove in three runs to help the Padres snap an eight-game losing streak with a 7-4 victory over the Astros. The Padres scored five of their runs in the seventh inning. Dave Roberts tripled behind two walks and counted himself on an error. Mike Champion was safe on another error, Jerry Turner doubled and Ivie sent them both home with a single.
Expos 5, Cubs 0 at Montreal (night game):
The Cubs, who had won eight straight games, were stopped on their streak by Jackie Brown, who pitched the Expos to a 5-0 victory. Brown scattered seven hits in recording his second shutout of the season. Dave Cash batted in the Expos' first two runs with a single and sacrifice fly.
Mets 5, Phillies 3 at New York (night game):
Bobby Valentine singled and was safe on an error, scoring both times, before hitting a homer as the Mets defeated the Phillies, 5-3, to snap their six-game losing streak. The Mets' first three batters accounted for two runs in the first inning when Lenny Randle doubled, Valentine beat out an infield hit and Steve Henderson doubled. After being safe on an error in the third, Valentine scored on a single by John Stearns, who hit safely in his 11th straight game. Valentine added his first homer in a Mets' uniform in the fifth.
Pirates 9, Cardinals 1 at St. Louis (night game):
The Pirates whacked three homers, including the 400th of Willie Stargell's career, and beat the Cardinals, 9-1. Bill Robinson started the Pirates' scoring with a two-run rap in the first inning. Stargell's homer in the fifth followed a double by Robinson. Phil Garner added a circuit clout in the ninth.
