Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 8, Red Sox 2 at Boston (night game):
Doug DeCinces clubbed a pair of two-run homers in support of Jim Palmer, who pitched the Orioles to an 8-2 victory to hand the Red Sox their seventh straight defeat. Rick Dempsey also homered for the Orioles, accounting for their first run in the third inning. Luis Tiant was working on a three-hitter for the Red Sox and held a 2-1 lead going into the seventh when Tony Muser singled and DeCinces smacked his first homer of the game. A walk to Rick Dempsey and double by Al Bumbry added another run before the inning ended. DeCinces homered again in the eighth when the Orioles scored four runs to end a string of 11 straight losses to the Red Sox since June 21, 1976.

A's 2, Angels 0 at California (night game):
Vida Blue continued his mastery in Anaheim Stadium, allowing only five hits and pitching the Athletics to a 2-0 victory over the Angels. The triumph was Blue's 12th straight in the Angels' park with his only loss coming on July 20, 1969, in his major league debut. Manny Sanguillen, who had three singles, drove in the A's first run in the third inning and Tony Armas capped the scoring with a homer in the fourth.

White Sox 5, Twins 2 at Chicago (night game):
Richie Zisk hit two homers and drove in all of the runs for the White Sox in a 5-2 victory over the Twins. Alan Bannister beat out a bunt and Jorge Orta doubled before Zisk connected for the circuit in the first inning. Orta was on base with a single when Zisk homered again in the third.

Royals 12, Indians 2 at Cleveland (night game):
Replacing Paul Splittorff with none out in the first, Marty Pattin pitched nine innings of scoreless relief and breezed home with the victory as the Royals defeated the Indians, 12-2. Splittorff gave up three hits and a walk, with the Indians' runs coming on a bases-loaded single by Rico Carty, before Pattin took over. The Royals piled up a total of 18 hits, including a homer, two doubles and two singles by Joe Zdeb, who drove in four runs. Amos Otis had a homer, double and single for three RBIs. John Mayberry also hit for the circuit.

Tigers 5, Yankees 1 at New York (night game):
With the support of homers by Jason Thompson and Milt May, Dave Rozema gained his first victory since June 7, pitching the Tigers past the Yankees, 5-1. Thompson's round-tripper accounted for the Tigers' initial run in the second inning. May led off the sixth with his circuit clout and before the inning ended the Tigers added three more runs on five singles, one of them by Thompson for his second RBI of the game. The Yankees picked up their tally in the home half of the sixth, but Rozema squelched the rally by getting Thurman Munson to ground into a double play.

Brewers 2, Mariners 1 at Seattle (night game):
A homer by Sixto Lezcano in the fourth inning produced the Brewers' winning run in a 2-1 victory over the Mariners. The Brewers' initial run in the first was unearned following an error by Carlos Lopez.

Rangers 11, Blue Jays 8 at Toronto (night game):
The Rangers broke a 2-2 tie with a four-run outburst in the fifth inning and went on from there to defeat the Blue Jays, 11-8. Willie Horton and Mike Hargrove singled to start the stanza and both runners scored on a double by Juan Beniquez and an error on a relay by Bob Bailor. Bump Wills tripled, driving in Beniquez, and then crossed the plate himself when Bert Campaneris hit a sacrifice fly. Carnpaneris homered in the seventh to add what proved to be the deciding run before the Rangers iced their victory with two more tallies in the eighth. Ron Fairly and Steve Staggs homered for the Blue Jays. Staggs smashed his homer in the sixth inning for the rookie second baseman's first major league hit in his debut after being called up from Iowa (American Association).

Astros 3, Braves 1 at Houston (night game):
Managerial maneuvering worked out in favor of the Astros, who defeated the Braves, 3-1. In the ninth inning, J.R. Richard allowed two hits, putting runners on first and second with none out, and had a count of a 2-and-0 on Darrel Chaney when the Astros brought in Joe Niekro to relieve. After Chaney took two strikes, the Braves had Brian Asselstine bat for Chaney. Asselstine promptly hit into a double play and Rod Gilbreath grounded out to end the game.

[DH] Expos 6, Mets 5 (night game) / Expos 5, Mets 3 at Montreal (night game):
Homers by Ellis Valentine and Tony Perez in the first game and by Chris Speier and Andre Dawson in the second game helped the Expos sweep a doubleheader with the Mets, 6-5 and 5-3, before a Canada Day crowd of 33,422. After the Expos took a 3-0 lead in the second inning of the opener, Valentine raced out an inside-the-park drive in the third. Perez homered with a man on base in the fifth to provide the winning blow. John Stearns homered for the Mets. In the nightcap, John Milner hit a two-run homer for the Mets in the first inning, but in the Expos' half, Dave Cash walked and Speier connected for the circuit to tie the score. The Expos added a run in the same stanza to go ahead, 3-2. Stearns drove in a run with a single in the sixth to knot the count, but Dawson completed the sweep with a two-run wallop in the Expos' half.

Phillies 7, Pirates 6 at Philadelphia (night game):
Climaxing a wild game that brought 41 players into action, the Phillies came from behind with three runs in the 14th inning to defeat the Pirates, 7-6. When Frank Taveras was banished during the Phillies' rally, the Pirates had to juggle their lineup and finished the game with outfielder Dave Parker at second base and pitcher Terry Forster in right field. Bob Boone, Ted Sizemore and Jerry Martin hit homers for the Phillies, while the Pirates had round-trippers by Jim Fregosi and Phil Garner, as the clubs wound up the first nine innings in a 4-4 deadlock. In the 14th, the Pirates went ahead with two runs on a double by Bobby Tolan and error by Bake McBride. Mike Schmidt, catching the Pirates by surprise, opened the Phillies' rally with a safe bunt. Greg Luzinski beat out an infield hit. Richie Hebner doubled, driving in Schmidt and sending pinch-runner Randy Lerch to third. After an intentional pass to Garry Maddox, Davey Johnson hit a sacrifice fly to score Terry Harmon, who was the pinch-runner for pinch-runner Lerch. Hebner moved to third on the play and counted the winning run on a single by Sizemore.

Reds 2, Padres 1 at San Diego (night game):
George Foster homered after a single by Dave Concepcion in the third inning to enable the Reds to defeat the Padres, 2-1. Fred Norman, who pitched a five-hitter for the Reds, was turned back in his bid for a shutout when Gene Tenace homered for the Padres' run with two out in the ninth.

Dodgers 10, Giants 5 at San Francisco (night game):
The Dodgers, who hit 91 homers in 1976, reached the 100 mark with circuit clouts by Steve Garvey and Ron Cey in a 10-5 victory over the Giants. Cey, who had a single in addition to his homer, drove in three runs. Steve Yeager also accounted for three RBIs with a double and triple. Garvey's homer came with a man on base. Bill Madlock swung the big bat for the Giants with two homers accounting for four runs.

Cardinals 3, Cubs 1 at St. Louis (night game):
Larry Dierker gained his first victory since May 27 with the help of Rawly Eastwick, who pitched the last two innings, when the Cardinals defeated the Cubs, 3-1. The Cards got off to a quick start in the first inning, counting twice off Mike Krukow. Garry Templeton singled, stole second and scored on a double by Tony Scott, After a balk moved Scott to third, Ted Simmons drove in the second run with an infield hit. The Cubs picked up their tally in the second on a triple by Bobby Murcer and sacrifice fly by Jerry Morales, but the Cards iced their victory with a marker in the eighth on singles by Keith Hernandez and Mike Anderson around a sacrifice by Ken Reitz.
