Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 5, Red Sox 2 at Boston (night game):
The Red Sox collected only five hits off Mike Flanagan and lost to the Orioles, 5-2, for their eighth straight defeat. Ken Singleton and Pat Kelly batted in two runs apiece for the Orioles. A double by Al Bumbry and single by Singleton produced the initial run in the first inning before the Red Sox posted their pair with a single by Rick Burleson, pass to Jim Rice, single by Carl Yastrzemski and sacrifice fly by Carlton Fisk. The Orioles tied the score in the second and went ahead with another double by Bumbry and single by Singleton in the fifth. Kelly iced the decision by hitting a two-run single in the seventh.

A's 9, Angels 4 at California (night game):
Mike Jorgensen hit a grand slam in the eighth inning for his first homer of the season to cap a five-run outburst that brought the Athletics a 9-4 victory over the Angels. A freak double and two intentional passes were damaging to the Angels during the A's big inning. Willie Crawford led off with a pop fly that fell untouched on the infield for a double. After Marty Perez was retired, the Angels handed an intentional pass to Mitchell Page, who had hit a homer earlier in the game. Dave LaRoche, relieving Dyar Miller, hit Wayne Gross with a pitch and then uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Larry Murray to score as the pinch-runner for Crawford, breaking a 4-4 tie. Following the second out, an intentional pass to Earl Williams reloaded the sacks and set the stage for Jorgensen's jackpot wallop.

White Sox 13, Twins 8 at Chicago (day game):
Jim Spencer batted in eight runs in a game for the second time this season and powered the White Sox to a 13-8 victory over the Twins. Spencer started his slugging with a grand slam in the fourth after Bill Butler, the Twins' starter, had walked three batters to load the bases. After accounting for another RBI with a single in the sixth, Spencer capped his big day by hitting a homer with two men on base in the eighth during a seven-run outburst by the White Sox. All seven runs were scored as the result of two Twins' errors.

Royals 1, Indians 0 at Cleveland (night game):
Andy Hassler allowed only one hit and pitched the Royals to a 1-0 victory over the Indians. The Royals scored their run off Dennis Eckersley in the sixth inning when Hal McRae doubled and Pete LaCock singled. Then, with one out in the Indians' half, Duane Kuiper hit a high bouncer to the third base side of the mound. Hassler fielded the ball but his throw to first base was too late to nail Kuiper. The one-hitter was the second of Hassler's career. In his other effort on September 8, 1974, while with the Angels, the southpaw lost to the White Sox, 1-0.

Yankees 6, Tigers 4 at New York (day game):
Fred Stanley, who entered game at shortstop after the Yankees had used a pinch-hitter for Bucky Dent in the seventh inning, came to bat in the eighth and hit his first homer of the season to beat the Tigers, 6-4. A two-run triple by Phil Mankowski and homer by Rusty Staub helped the Tigers take a 4-1 lead before Chris Chambliss got one run back with a four-bagger in the sixth. The Yankees then tied the score in the seventh when Paul Blair singled, Jim Wynn walked as the pinch-hitter for Dent and Roy White doubled. In the eighth, Graig Nettles singled with one out and Blair sacrificed before Stanley hit his first homer since last August 16 to snap the Tigers' five-game winning streak.

Mariners 2, Brewers 1 at Seattle (night game):
In a reversal of the previous night's result, Leroy Stanton homered in the sixth inning to give the Mariners a 2-1 victory over the Brewers. The Mariners' first run in the second inning was unearned on a passed ball by Larry Haney. The Brewers tied the score in the sixth with a double by Robin Yount, single by Von Joshua and infield out by Cecil Cooper. In the previous night's contest, a homer by Sixto Lezcano gave the Brewers a 2-1 victory over the Mariners.

Blue Jays 10, Rangers 7 at Toronto (day game):
Bob Bailor and Otto Velez drove in two runs apiece with singles in the eighth inning to enable the Blue Jays to down the Rangers, 10-7. The Jays took a 6-3 lead in the fifth when Doug Rader homered with two men on base, but the Rangers came back with two runs in the eighth on a circuit clout by Bump Wills before the Blue Jays had their four-run inning. Pete Vuckovich gave up the Ranger pair in the ninth but stuck it out to complete his route-going performance.

Braves 2, Astros 1 at Houston (night game):
A double by Willie Montanez in the 13th inning scored Tom Paciorek and gave the Braves a 2-1 victory over the Astros. Paciorek led off with a pinch-single, took second on a sacrifice by Gary Matthews and stopped at third on a single by Biff Pocoroba before Montanez rapped his game-winning double.

Expos 4, Mets 3 at Montreal (night game):
Warren Cromartie drove in two runs with his first major league homer and Gary Carter accounted for two other tallies as the Expos defeated the Mets, 4-3. After the Mets took the lead with a two-run single by John Milner in the third, Tony Perez tripled for the Expos in the fourth and beat the throw home when Carter grounded to Bud Harrelson. Carter was safe at first on the fielder's choice and trotted across the plate when Cromartie followed with his homer. Carter knocked in what proved to be the winning run with a single in the fifth that scored Chris Speier, offsetting a run by the Mets in the ninth.

Phillies 4, Pirates 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
Hitting his third single of the game, Larry Bowa batted in the Phillies' winning run in a 4-3 victory over the Pirates. Bowa singled and scored in the first inning on an error and sacrifice fly by Greg Luzinski. After hitting another single in the third, Bowa crossed the plate again when Mike Schmidt followed with his 22nd homer of the season. The Pirates had a chance for a big inning in the fifth but got only one run, tying the score at 3-3, on singles by Dave Parker and Al Oliver and a double by Jim Fregosi. The Phillies then pushed over their winning run in the seventh.

Reds 6, Padres 3 at San Diego (night game):
A virtual stranger in the Reds' lineup, Ray Knight played third base in place of Pete Rose and smashed a three-run homer in the seventh inning to beat the Padres, 6-3. Going into the game, Knight had batted only 26 times this season, but after Joe Morgan and George Foster singled in the seventh, the utility infielder broke a 2-2 tie with his round-tripper.

Dodgers 10, Giants 3 at San Francisco (night game):
Steve Garvey drove in three runs with a homer and Bill Russell added three RBIs with a triple and two singles as the Dodgers romped over the Giants, 10-3. Garvey's homer, after Davey Lopes singled and Russell was safe on an error in the first inning, was his 22nd of season, representing a career high for the Dodgers' first baseman, who hit 21 in 1974.

Cardinals 10, Cubs 3 at St. Louis (night game):
The Cubs committed seven errors, including five in the first inning, and went down to a 10-3 defeat at the hands of the Cardinals before 50,340, the largest night turnout in the history of Busch Stadium. Manny Trillo and Bill Bonham were charged with two errors apiece and Gene Clines with one in the first as the Cardinals scored four runs, three unearned, on four hits and one walk. Mike Tyson made it 6-0 with a two-run homer in the third. Trillo's third error of the game and another by Steve Swisher occurred in the sixth when the Cards wrapped up their scoring with four runs.
