Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 5, Blue Jays 2 at Boston (night game):
Carlton Fisk drove in three runs with a sacrifice fly and homer, while Jim Rice also hit a homer, as the Red Sox defeated the Blue Jays, 5-2. Fisk lofted his sacrifice fly in the first inning and Rice homered in the fifth to help the Red Sox take a 3-0 lead before Doug Rader accounted for the Blue Jays' runs with a circuit clout in the sixth. Rice, who had three hits, doubled in the seventh and Fisk clinched the victory with his homer.

Twins 8, Angels 6 at Minnesota (night game):
In his earliest departure of the season, Frank Tanana lasted only 3 2/3 innings and was charged with five runs as the Twins defeated the Angels, 8-6. The Twins rapped Tanana for two runs in the third and then sent the Angels' ace packing while scoring three times in the fourth. Luis Gomez and Lyman Bostock hit doubles for the inning's first marker and, after the Twins loaded the bases, Butch Wynegar singled to drive in two runs. Gomez provided the deciding hit with a two-run single in the seventh. Mario Guerrero and Bobby Bonds hit homers for the Angels.

Yankees 8, Indians 2 at New York (night game):
The Yankees beat the Indians for the 13th consecutive time over two seasons, posting an 8-2 victory behind the four-hit pitching of Catfish Hunter. The Yankees settled the issue in the fifth inning when Paul Blair batted in two runs with a triple and, after two out, Lou Piniella accounted for two more with a homer. Graig Nettles also had two RBIs in the game with a pair of singles. Ray Fosse homered for the Indians.

Rangers 8, A's 3 at Texas (night game):
Toby Harrah broke a 3-3 tie with a three-run homer in the sixth inning and added a solo swat in the seventh to pace the Rangers to an 8-3 victory over the Athletics. Juan Beniquez singled and Dave May beat out a bunt ahead of Harrah's game-winning homer.

Cubs 2, Cardinals 0 at Chicago (day game):
Rick Reuschel won his sixth straight game and 12th of the season, pitching the Cubs to a 2-0 victory over the Cardinals. The Cubs counted an unearned run in the first inning and then put the game away when Larry Biittner homered in the sixth.

Dodgers 7, Astros 4 at Los Angeles (night game):
After exploding for five runs in the first inning on a double by Steve Garvey and homer by Dusty Baker, the Dodgers added a pair of tallies on a round-tripper by Steve Yeager in the fourth to defeat the Astros, 7-4. The Dodgers loaded the bases in the first on a single by Bill Russell and walks to Reggie Smith and Ron Cey before Garvey lashed his double. Baker followed with his homer. The Astros came back with a solo drive by Jose Cruz in the second and three-run blast by Bob Watson in the third to cut the Dodgers' lead to 5-4, but Yeager's drive in the fourth put the game out of the Astros' reach. Ken Forsch was the hard-luck loser, pitching to only two batters in the first before suffering a muscle spasm in his arm.

Phillies 6, Mets 4 at Philadelphia (night game):
Mike Schmidt hit his 25th homer of the season, connecting with two men on base in the third inning, to start the Phillies' scoring in a 6-4 victory over the Mets. The Phillies ran their winning streak to eight games, while the defeat was the Mets' eighth in a row. After Schmidt's blast, the Mets went ahead with four runs in the fourth on a triple by Steve Henderson, single by John Stearns, walk to Bobby Valentine, double by Doug Flynn and single by Nino Espinosa. But Espinosa, who was the Mets' starting pitcher, was tagged with the loss when the Phillies came back with two runs in their half. With the bases loaded, Greg Luzinski singled off Lenny Randle's glove, driving in one run, and another scored when Bud Harrelson made a wild throw after recovering the ball.

Giants 5, Padres 1 at San Francisco (night game):
Bob Knepper allowed only five hits in eight innings and Randy Moffitt pitched a hitless ninth as the Giants ended their eight-game losing streak by defeating the Padres, 5-1. Gary Thomasson batted for Knepper in the eighth and singled to drive in the Giants' last two runs. The Padres' lone run came in the fifth when Gene Tenace doubled, took third on a short single by Bill Almon and scored as Mike Champion grounded into a double play.
