Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 4, Yankees 3 at Baltimore (night game):
Rookie Eddie Murray's single with the bases loaded in the ninth inning sent the Orioles winging to a 4-3 victory over the Yankees. Al Bumbry started the uprising with a triple to left that eluded Paul Blair. Pat Kelly drew an intentional walk and stole second. Then Ken Singleton walked to set the stage for Murray's decisive blow.
Angels 6, Twins 5 at California (night game):
Dave Garcia's debut as manager was a success as the Angels edged the Twins, 6-5. The winning run scored when reliever Dave Johnson slipped and threw a wild pitch with the bases full in the ninth inning.
White Sox 4, Royals 2 at Chicago (night game):
Francisco Barrios spun a six-hitter and struck out 10 while pitching the White Sox to a 4-2 triumph over the Royals. Jorge Orta delivered a two-run double, advanced to third on an infield out and scored on Chet Lemon's sacrifice fly as the White Sox scored three runs in the first inning en-route to their 10th victory in 11 games.
Red Sox 2, Indians 1 at Cleveland (night game):
Consecutive singles by Carl Yastrzemski, Carlton Fisk and George Scott in the fourth inning produced the winning run as the Red Sox beat the Indians, 2-1, behind rookie Bob Stanley's five-hit pitching. The Red Sox, with 24, and the Indians, with 21, had a total of 45 infield putouts, tying the American League record set by the Tigers and Washington Senators September 15, 1945.
Tigers 9, Blue Jays 7 at Detroit (night game):
Slump-ridden Rusty Staub hit a homer and double, driving in four runs while leading the Tigers to a 9-7 triumph over the Blue Jays. Staub tied the game with a two-run double in the seventh, then scored the go-ahead run on Steve Kemp's single.
A's 8, Mariners 1 at Oakland (night game):
The Athletics erupted for six runs in the fourth inning and breezed past the Mariners, 8-1, for their second victory in nine games. Leroy Stanton led off the seventh with a home run, spoiling the shutout bid by Joe Coleman in his first start of the season.
Astros 2, Reds 0 at Houston (night game):
J.R. Richard's five-hit pitching and his first shutout of the season carried the Astros to a 2-0 triumph over the Reds. The only runs scored when Bob Watson unloaded a two-run double in the sixth inning, after Richard and Julio Gonzalez singled.
Expos 4, Pirates 2 at Montreal (night game):
The Expos turned a three-run fifth inning uprising into a 4-2 victory over the Pirates as Stan Bahnsen went the distance for the first time this season. Dave Cash doubled and Chris Speier singled to start the decisive fifth. Cash scored on Wayne Garrett's single and Speier also crossed the plate when Bill Robinson erred fielding the ball. Garrett, who reached third on the play, scored the third run of the inning on Gary Carter's squeeze bunt.
Giants 5, Padres 1 at San Diego (night game):
The resurgent Giants made it six victories in a row by beating the Padres, 5-1. Marc Hill drove in two runs with a single and double and Randy Moffitt pitched 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.
