Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 3, Twins 0 at California (night game):
Posting his fourth shutout of the season, Nolan Ryan allowed only four hits and pitched the Angels to a 3-0 victory over the Twins. Paul Thormodsgard also allowed only four hits, but an error by the Twins' pitcher and another by Rod Carew enabled the Angels to score two unearned runs in the first inning. Bobby Bonds singled and drove in the only earned tally in the sixth. Carew went hitless in four trips, striking out twice, and his average dropped to .393.

Royals 8, White Sox 3 at Chicago (night game):
Amos Otis homered with a man on base in the second inning and tripled with the bases loaded in the sixth to provide the Royals' principal power in an 8-3 victory over the White Sox. Otis scored after his triple on a sacrifice fly by Darrell Porter and also walked in the fourth, stole second and crossed the plate on a single by Porter. John Mayberry also had a homer for the Royals.

Indians 7, Red Sox 1 at Cleveland (night game):
A homer by Buddy Bell in the second inning for his first of four hits started the Indians off to a 7-1 victory over the Red Sox. Bell also scored three other times. The Indians put the game away with four runs in the fourth. Rico Carty and Bell opened with singles, Andre Thornton drove them across with a triple and Charlie Spikes followed with his first homer since returning to the Indians from the minor leagues.

Tigers 2, Blue Jays 1 at Detroit (day game):
Pain in his right shoulder forced Mark Fidrych to leave the game after only 15 pitches, but Jim Crawford turned in a superb performance in relief to enable the Tigers to defeat the Blue Jays, 2-1. Steve Staggs, leading off for the Blue Jays, reached third base on an error by Ron LeFlore and scored on a sacrifice fly by Al Woods. Fidrych retired Bob Bailor and had a count of 3-and-2 on Ron Fairly before Crawford took over. Crawford retired Fairly on one pitch and limited the Blue Jays to only four hits over the rest of the route. The Tigers won the game in their half of the first with an RBI single by Rusty Staub and sacrifice fly by Jason Thompson.

Yankees 5, Brewers 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
Willie Randolph, who hit two singles and scored twice, followed with a two-run homer in the eighth inning to clinch the Yankees' 5-2 victory over the Brewers. Don Gullett gave up the Brewers' four hits and both their runs in 6 2/3 innings before Dick Tidrow relieved. One of the Brewers' runs came on a single by Dick Davis for his first major league RBI in his first major league game.

A's 3, Mariners 2 at Oakland (night game):
Enrique Romo, taking over in relief in the 10th inning, hit Marty Perez in the hand with his first pitch, leading to the run that gave the Athletics a 3-2 victory over the Mariners. Mitchell Page bunted Perez to second. After an intentional pass to Wayne Gross, Manny Sanguillen forced Gross as Perez took third. Jim Tyrone then batted for Tim Hosley and beat out an infield hit to score Perez.

Rangers 4, Orioles 3 at Texas (night game):
After Ken Singleton homered for the Orioles with two men on base in the first inning, the Rangers came back to extend their winning streak to six games with a 4-3 victory in 10 innings. The Rangers tied the score in the ninth on a walk to Toby Harrah and double by Jim Sundberg. Bert Campaneris walked in the 10th, took third on a one-out single by Juan Beniquez and counted the winning run with two away when Harrah singled.

Braves 4, Reds 3 at Cincinnati (night game):
Pinch-hitting for a pinch-hitter, Tom Paciorek delivered a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning to give the Braves a 4-3 victory over the Reds. Biff Pocoroba opened the inning by drawing a walk and advancing to second on a balk by Joe Henderson. Darrel Chaney singled Pocoroba to third. When Joe Nolan was announced as a pinch-hitter for Phil Niekro, the Reds brought Joe Hoerner to the mound. Paciorek then went to bat in place of Nolan and hit his sacrifice fly.

Dodgers 8, Astros 0 at Houston (night game):
Doug Rau pitched a shutout for his 10th victory and Ted Martinez and Bill Russell each rapped three hits as the Dodgers defeated the Astros, 8-0. After the Dodgers took a 7-0 lead, John Hale entered the game as a pinch-hitter for Manny Mota and homered for the final run. The victory was Rau's fifth straight.

Pirates 5, Expos 4 at Montreal (night game):
Jim Fregosi, who entered the game as a pinch-runner and substitute for Willie Stargell in the ninth inning when the Pirates tied the score at 4-4, smashed a homer in 12th to beat the Expos, 5-4. The Pirates trailed, 3-1, until Phil Garner hit for the circuit with a man on base in the eighth. The Expos came back with a run on doubles by Andre Dawson and Jose Morales, but Al Oliver singled for the Pirates in the ninth and took third on a single by Stargell, who went out for Fregosi. Rennie Stennett then forced Fregosi but beat the throw to first to prevent a double play as Oliver counted the tying tally.

Mets 4, Cubs 2 at New York (night game):
A loser of seven straight decisions, Jon Matlack gained his first victory since May 18 when Steve Henderson hit a two-run homer for the Mets in the eighth inning to beat the Cubs, 4-2. The Cubs took a 2-1 lead in the seventh when Steve Ontiveros walked and George Mitterwald homered, but the Mets tied the score in their half on a double by Mike Vail and single by Lee Mazzilli. In the eighth, after Lenny Randle singled, Bruce Sutter took the mound for the Cubs in place of Rick Reuschel. The reliever then served up Henderson's homer, but Reuschel wound up as the loser for putting Randle on base.

Phillies 5, Cardinals 4 at Philadelphia (night game):
Playing in the outfield for the first time this season, Roger Freed dropped a fly by Ted Sizemore to right with two out in the ninth inning, handing the Phillies a 5-4 victory over the Cardinals. Before his error, Freed had batted in the Cards' first two runs with a sacrifice fly and single. Mike Schmidt hit his 26th homer of the season with a man on base for the Phillies, who held a 4-2 lead until Ken Reitz singled and Mike Tyson homered for the Cards in the ninth. In the Phillies' half, Richie Hebner walked and Bob Boone singled before Freed made a one-handed attempt on Sizemore's fly and let the ball bounce out of his glove.

Padres 7, Giants 3 at San Diego (night game):
The Padres erupted for four runs in the fifth inning, two scoring on a homer by Jerry Turner, and snapped the Giants' six-game winning streak, 7-3. The Giants counted twice in the top half of the fifth to tie the score at 3-3 before Dave Winfield singled and Turner smashed the deadlock with his circuit clout. Singles by Dave Roberts, Mike Champion, Dave Kingman and Gene Richards then added a pair of extra runs.
