Today's scores and summaries:

Mariners 4, Angels 1 at California (night game):
Dick Pole allowed only three hits in the first six innings and Enrique Romo followed with three perfect frames, striking out five, to wrap up the Mariners' 4-1 victory over the Angels, who lost despite executing a triple play. Dyar Miller relieved Ken Brett in the fifth after the Mariners had scored two runs and had Dave Collins on second and Bill Stein on first. On Miller's first pitch, Leroy Stanton grounded into a triple play from third baseman Ron Jackson to second baseman Jerry Remy to first baseman Tony Solaita.

White Sox 2, Blue Jays 1 at Chicago (day game):
A pitching duel between Ken Kravec and Jerry Garvin was decided in the eighth inning when the White Sox scored an unearned run to defeat the Blue Jays, 2-1. Kravec gave up only three hits, while Garvin allowed four. With two out in the eighth, Garvin walked both Richie Zisk and Lamar Johnson. Dave McKay then erred on a grounder by Eric Soderholm, allowing Zisk to score.

Red Sox 7, Indians 4 at Cleveland (night game):
Carl Yastrzemski became the Red Sox' career leader in hits with 2,655, one more than Ted Williams, to mark a 7-4 victory over the Indians. Yastrzemski smacked a homer in the fourth inning to set off a three-run rally and followed with a single in the fifth when the Red Sox tied the score at 4-4. Butch Hobson broke the deadlock with a homer in the sixth in another three-run inning. Rico Carty batted in two runs for the Indians with a single and homer for his first RBIs since July 3. Andre Thornton also rapped a round-tripper for the Tribe.

Royals 4, Tigers 3 at Kansas City (night game):
Frank White drove in a run in each of his first three times at bat, marking his fifth consecutive game with one or more RBIs, as the Royals defeated the Tigers, 4-3. White accounted for his first run with a grounder in the second inning. A single by White and sacrifice fly by George Brett added a pair in the fourth before White produced the deciding marker with a triple in the sixth. Jason Thompson and Ron LeFlore homered for the Tigers.

Yankees 6, Brewers 3 at Milwaukee (day game):
Reggie Jackson belted two homers and George Zeber hit one to power the Yankees to a 6-3 victory over the Brewers. Jackson's first homer of the game came in the second inning and tied the score at 1-1. Then in the seventh, Jackson and Zeber each hit for the circuit with a man on base. Roy White doubled in the eighth and later stole home for the sixth time in his career.

Orioles 6, Rangers 1 at Texas (night game):
Ross Grimsley won for the fifth time in his last six decisions, scattering seven hits and pitching the Orioles to a 6-1 victory over the Rangers. The Orioles nicked Gaylord Perry for two runs in the first inning on a single by Tom Shopay, a sacrifice, an error by Bump Wills and double by Ken Singleton. Singles by Singleton and Eddie Murray led to another run in the sixth before the Orioles capped their scoring with three in the seventh, including an unearned run on an error by Claudell Washington.

Reds 7, Braves 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
George Foster smashed three homers and Tom Seaver, who pitched a two-hitter, also rapped a round-tripper as the Reds defeated the Braves, 7-1. Foster batted in five runs. Seaver had a no-hitter in the works until Willie Montanez doubled with one out in the seventh inning. Rowland Office led off with a double in the ninth for the Braves' other hit and scored their run on an error by Rick Auerbach.

Astros 4, Dodgers 3 at Houston (night game):
The Astros rallied for two runs off Don Sutton in the eighth inning and defeated the Dodgers, 4-3. Regge Smith, returning to the Dodgers' lineup after being out for six days with injuries, hit two homers and drove in all their runs. After a solo swat by Smith gave the Dodgers a 3-2 lead in the eighth, Wilbur Howard beat out a bunt with one away in the Astros' half and stole second as Bob Watson struck out. Jose Cruz came through with a double, driving in Howard, and then crossed the plate himself with the winning run on a single by Joe Ferguson.

Cardinals 7, Phillies 6 at Philadelphia (night game):
Overcoming a show of power by the Phillies, who hit three homers in one inning, the Cardinals battled back and gained a 7-6 victory in 11 innings. Greg Luzinski, Richie Hebner and Bob Boone all hit homers in the sixth when the Phillies took a 5-2 lead. The Cards knotted the count in the ninth with a single by Lou Brock, homer by Ted Simmons, single by Tony Scott, a stolen base and single by Dane Iorg. In the 11th, Mike Phillips walked and raced home on a double by Hector Cruz, who advanced to third when Larry Bowa threw wildly on the relay from the outfield. Cruz then scored what proved to be the winning run on an infield out by Jerry Mumphrey. The Phillies fell short in their half with a run on a double by Luzinski, who came within a few feet of hitting his second homer of the game.
