Today's scores and summaries:

Brewers 14, Red Sox 5 at Boston (night game):
Scoring 11 runs in the final two innings, the Brewers ended their five-game losing streak with a 14-5 pasting of the Red Sox. Boston led, 5-3, in the top of the eighth when Milwaukee counted four times, Jim Wynn scoring the tie-breaking run when first baseman George Scott let Lenn Sakata's grounder get through his legs for an error. The Brewers tacked on seven runs in the ninth, Sal Bando and Ken McMullen contributing RBI singles and Von Joshua a two-run double. Don Money gave the Brewers a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth with a two-run homer, but the Red Sox scored three times in the bottom of the inning on run-producing singles by Rick Miller and Fred Lynn and a bases-loaded walk to Jim Rice.

Tigers 3, White Sox 1 at Chicago (night game):
The Tigers snapped the White Sox' six-game winning streak, 3-1, with Aurelio Rodriguez' two-run homer in the second inning helping Fernando Arroyo to his first victory since June 15. Tito Fuentes singled home Rodriguez with Detroit's final run in the ninth. The Sox scored in the first on a bases-loaded infield out. Reliever John Hiller put down a Chicago threat in the ninth, striking out Lamar Johnson with runners at first and third, issuing a walk to Jim Spencer, but fanning Chet Lemon.

Royals 5, Indians 4 at Kansas City (night game):
Joe Lahoud's first hit as a Royal, an 11th-inning pinch-single, scored Tom Poquette from third, boosting Kansas City to a 5-4 win over the Indians. Poquette was aboard with a two-out triple. Lahoud swung for Frank White after Fred Patek was given an intentional pass. Cleveland tied the score in the eighth on a two-run triple by Ron Pruitt. George Brett drove in three runs for the Royals, hitting a two-run homer in the third and a double in the fifth. Hal McRae also homered for the winners in the third.

Orioles 6, Yankees 4 at New York (night game):
A five-run, eighth-inning rally pushed the Orioles past the Yankees, 6-4, and moved Baltimore two games ahead of Boston in the A. L. East. Eddie Murray and Lee May homered off Catfish Hunter to start the Birds' comeback. Reliever Dick Tidrow got the next two batters, but walked Dave Skaggs, gave up a double to Billy Smith and two-run single to Elliott Maddox. Ken Singleton drove home the final run with a single off Sparky Lyle. Smith hit Hunter's first pitch of the game for a homer, but the Yankees tied it in the fifth on an RBI single by Mickey Rivers, went ahead in the seventh and managed single runs in the last two frames.

Angels 9, A's 3 at Oakland (night game):
Don Baylor's first career grand slam in the opening inning was the winning blow as the Angels romped past the Athletics, 9-3. Two walks around Rance Mulliniks' double set the stage for Baylor's shot against his former teammates. Mulliniks made it 6-1 in the fourth, homering on the heels of a single by Jerry Remy. Larry Murray hit his first major league homer for the A's in the third. Rusty Torres capped the California scoring with a two-run blast in the ninth.

Twins 4, Mariners 1 at Seattle (night game):
Butch Wynegar's bases-loaded double off Enrique Romo in the top of the ninth cleared the sacks, making 4-1 winners of the Twins and Pete Redfern over the Mariners. Rod Carew snapped a scoreless tie with a solo homer in the seventh, but Seattle tied it in the eighth on singles by Steve Braun, Craig Reynolds and Dave Collins.

[DH] Reds 6, Cubs 2 (day game) / Cubs 5, Reds 1 at Chicago (day game):
Major league home-run leader George Foster rapped his 32nd of the season and drove in a pair of runs as the Reds ended their longest losing streak since 1966 -- eight games -- with a 6-2 victory over the Cubs in the first game of a twin bill. Chicago, scoring all of its runs in the eighth inning of the second game, salvaged a split with a 5-1 decision. Cesar Geronimo and Mike Lum drove in fourth-inning runs for the Reds in the opener. Foster homered in the sixth, Johnny Bench singled home the 1,000th run of his career in the eighth and the Reds added two insurance runs in the ninth in support of Mario Soto's first major league victory. Trailing 1-0 in the eighth inning of the second contest, the Cubs tied the score on Ivan DeJesus' triple and a grounder by Gene Clines to Joe Morgan, who failed to throw out DeJesus at the plate. Singles by Jose Cardenal and Larry Biittner chased Clines home with the winning run. Bobby Murcer walked to load the bases and Cardenal scored on Jerry Morales' sacrifice fly. Two more Chicago runs crossed the plate on Steve Ontiveros' single and a sacrifice fly by Manny Trillo.

Dodgers 7, Phillies 5 at Los Angeles (night game):
Lee Lacy's three-run pinch-homer in the eighth gave the Dodgers a come-from-behind, 7-5 triumph over the Phillies. Lacy's drive, following a single by Steve Garvey and walk to Manny Mota, gave reliever Lance Rautzhan first his major league victory. The Phillies jumped to a 4-0 advantage in the third against Don Sutton, two runs coming on Greg Luzinski's 23rd round-tripper. The Dodgers tied the score in the fourth on solo homers by Ron Cey and Steve Garvey, a hit batsman and three singles. Mike Schmidt's RBI single gave Philadelphia a 5-4 lead in the top of the eighth.

Pirates 3, Astros 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The surging Pirates claimed their seventh straight win, edging the Astros, 3-2, on Rennie Stennett's run-scoring single in the bottom of the 11th. Bill Robinson drew a walk to open the inning and moved to third when loser Bo McLaughlin threw away Al Oliver's sacrifice bunt attempt. Stennett followed with a single to right. Robinson tied the score when he led off the ninth with a solo homer. The Astros grabbed a 2-0 lead in the sixth when Art Howe singled home Jose Cruz and later scored on Roger Metzger's double. Pittsburgh got one back in the eighth on a single and stolen base by Omar Moreno and pinch-hitter Fernando Gonzalez' base hit.

A three-run seventh inning boosted the Cardinals to their fifth straight victory, a 5-3 decision over the Braves. Trailing 3-2, the Cards got a single from Hector Cruz, who moved to second on a wild pitch by reliever Rick Camp. Mike Phillips walked and pinch-hitter Dave Rader reached first on Rod Gilbreath's throwing error, loading the bases. Lou Brock drew a pass from Don Collins to force in the tying run.
