Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 3, Angels 0 at California (night game):
Nolan Ryan yielded only five singles, but the Red Sox bunched three hits with two walks for three runs in the second inning and defeated the Angels, 3-0. Luis Tiant and Bob Stanley combined in pitching the shutout. Tiant was forced to leave the mound with two out in the seventh after being hit on the right thumb by a drive off the bat of Rance Mulliniks. The Red Sox' scoring rally against Ryan began with a pass to George Scott, who scored on singles by Carlton Fisk and Butch Hobson. After Bernie Carbo walked to load the bases, Rick Miller drove in two runs with a single.

White Sox 6, Royals 4 at Chicago (day game):
Eric Soderholm hit his fourth homer in the last six games, connecting with two men on base in the seventh inning, to lift the White Sox to a 6-4 victory over the Royals. Soderholm's smash followed singles by Oscar Gamble and Chet Lemon and put the White Sox ahead, 5-3. Jorge Orta added a run with a homer in the eighth. The crowd of 34,945 at the game boosted the White Sox attendance over the million mark at the earliest date in club history.

Twins 4, Indians 3 at Cleveland (day game):
A fine relief performance by Tom Johnson was rewarded when Roy Smalley homered for the Twins in the 14th inning to beat the Indians, 4-3. Johnson yielded only one hit in the last 4 2/3 innings and picked up his 12th victory. Rod Carew, who had two hits in four trips, homered in the sixth and Craig Kusick drove in two runs with a pinch single to give the Twins a 3-2 lead, but Andre Thornton knotted the count with a round-tripper in the eighth.

Yankees 9, A's 3 at Oakland (day game):
Roy White rapped four hits including a homer and drove in four of the Yankees' runs in a 9-3 victory over the Athletics. Reggie Jackson also homered in the Yankees' attack. The A's had a round-tripper by Mitchell Page.

Orioles 5, Mariners 3 at Seattle (night game):
Pinch-hitter Andres Mora delivered a two-run single with two out in the 11th inning to bring the Orioles a 5-3 victory over the Mariners. Lee May homered for the Orioles, who held a 3-2 lead before a circuit clout by Bill Stein tied the score in the ninth. John Montague, who was stopped on his streak of 18 scoreless innings in relief, loaded the bases in the 11th by hitting Pat Kelly with a pitch and walking two batters before Mora came through with his decisive single.

Rangers 6, Tigers 5 at Texas (night game):
Leading off in the 12th inning, Jim Sundberg smashed a homer to give the Rangers a 6-5 victory over the Tigers. Bump Wills drove in three runs with a double and single and Willie Horton hornered with a man on base to account for a 5-1 lead before the Tigers rallied to tie the score.

Brewers 3, Blue Jays 2 at Toronto (night game):
After knocking in two runs with a double in the seventh inning, Don Money scored on an error to bring the Brewers a 3-2 victory over the Blue Jays. Robin Yount and Cecil Cooper, who singled, counted on Money's two-bagger. Pete Vuckovich, taking over in relief of Jeff Byrd, then misplayed a grounder by Jamie Quirk, allowing Money to cross the plate. The Blue Jays had an unearned run in the fourth inning before taking a 2-0 lead when Hector Torres homered off Jim Slaton in the fifth.

Pirates 10, Braves 6 at Atlanta (night game):
A grand-slam homer by Bill Robinson in the eighth inning carried the Pirates to a 10-6 victory over the Braves. Trailing, 6-5, the Pirates opened the stanza with singles by Fernando Gonzalez and Jim Fregosi, Gonzalez taking third on Fregosi's hit. Ed Ott grounded to Cito Gaston, who threw wildly to the plate, allowing Gonzalez to score the tying run. After Mario Mendoza sacrificed, Dave Parker was handed an intentional pass to load the bases before Robinson whacked his homer off Dave Campbell.

Cardinals 4, Reds 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
The Reds' failure to complete a double play in the ninth inning proved costly when the Cardinals erupted for three runs to gain a 4-1 victory. The Reds counted their tally on doubles by Johnny Bench and Cesar Geronimo in the second. Keith Hernandez tied the score with a homer in the sixth and then led off the ninth by drawing a pass. After a sacrifice by Mike Anderson, Ken Reitz was passed intentionally. Mike Tyson grounded into a forceout at second, but Dave Concepcion, after taking the throw from Joe Morgan, lost the ball in his hurry to make a relay to first. Capitalizing on that break, Tony Scott batted for Butch Metzger and doubled, driving in Hernandez. Jerry Mumphrey followed with another double to plate two insurance runs.

Astros 11, Cubs 3 at Houston (day game):
Breaking a 3-3 tie, the Astros erupted for eight runs in the seventh inning and defeated the Cubs, 11-3. Rick Reuschel started for the Cubs but departed after two innings because of a muscle spasm in his back and his brother, Paul, was the loser in relief. The Astros' outburst included a three-run double by Enos Cabell and two-run double by Bob Watson.

Dodgers 7, Expos 4 at Montreal (night game):
The Dodgers exploded for seven runs in the first inning, including a homer by Rick Rhoden with two men on base, and defeated the Expos, 7-4. Walks to Davey Lopes, Reggie Smith and Ron Cey set the stage for the Dodgers' outburst. Steve Garvey singled, driving in two runs, and Dusty Baker doubled, accounting for another pair. After Joe Simpson singled, Rhoden climaxed the inning with his circuit clout.

Padres 8, Mets 6 at New York (day game):
George Hendrick drove in five runs with a homer and two doubles to pace the Padres' 16-hit attack in an 8-6 victory over the Mets. Hendrick doubled to produce two of the Padres' three runs in the first inning. After hitting another double and scoring in the third, Hendrick capped his big game by smashing a homer with two men on base in the sixth. Gene Richards and Dave Roberts also had three hits apiece for the Padres. Roberts batted in two runs. A double by Mike Vail and triple by Lenny Randle each produced two runs for the Mets.

Phillies 9, Giants 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
Greg Luzinski's second grand slam of the season and seventh of his major league career helped power the Phillies to a 9-3 victory over the Giants. Richie Hebner also homered, connecting with a man on base in the fourth inning when the Phillies took a 4-3 lead. The Phillies then broke the game apart with five runs in the eighth. Luzinski hit his homer off Randy Moffitt after a triple by Jay Johnstone and two walks had loaded the bases. Steve Carlton gained the victory but pitched only six innings before leaving the game with an upset stomach. The ace lefthander failed to strike out a batter for the first time since June 30, 1974, when he lasted only four innings in a game at Pittsburgh.
