Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 5, Yankees 3 at California (night game):
Nolan Ryan became the first A. L. pitcher to gain 15 victories this season when the Angels defeated the Yankees, 5-3. The Angels rapped Ron Guidry for three runs in the second inning, two scoring on a single by Terry Humphrey, and posted their winning margin in the eighth when Bobby Bonds hit an inside-the-park homer with Jerry Remy on base. Ryan, who worked seven innings before tiring, gave up five singles and yielded the Yankees' initial run on three hits in the first. The Yankees added an unearned run off Dave LaRoche in the eighth and a homer by Graig Nettles in the ninth.

Rangers 12, White Sox 10 at Chicago (night game):
Mike Hargrove homered in the 12th inning for his fourth hit of the game to highlight a six-run explosion that propelled the Rangers to a 12-10 victory over the White Sox. Chet Lemon had a circuit clout in the early going for the White Sox, who fell behind, 6-5, when Toby Harrah homered in the fifth, but Ralph Garr tied the score with a round-tripper in the White Sox eighth. The Rangers' rampage in the 12th began with a double by Harrah and pass to Ed Kirkpatrick. Bump Wills and Jim Sundberg delivered run-scoring singles before Hargrove hit his homer with two men on base. The Rangers added another run on a sacrifice fly by Willie Horton before the inning ended. The never-say-die White Sox rallied in their half, but it died after they had scored four runs.

Royals 7, Blue Jays 4 at Kansas City (night game):
Frank White homered with two men on base in the fourth inning and two pitches later George Brett also hit for the circuit to start the Royals off to a 7-4 victory over the Blue Jays. The Royals added their other runs in the seventh. John Mayberry singled and hot-footed it home on a double by Joe Zdeb. Fred Patek singled, Zdeb stopping at third. White then grounded to Steve Staggs, who threw wildly to the plate, allowing both Zdeb and Patek to score.

Brewers 7, Indians 4 at Milwaukee (night game):
The Brewers took advantage of Pat Dobson's wildness and scored three runs in the seventh inning to defeat the Indians, 7-4. With the score tied, 3-3, Dobson gave up a single by Robin Yount and walked Cecil Cooper, Jim Wynn and Sal Bando to force in the first run. Jim Wohlford followed with a single to make it 6-3. Rico Carty homered for the Indians in the eighth, but the Brewers added an insurance run in their half on a single by Cooper.

Twins 11, Tigers 1 at Minnesota (night game):
Lyman Bostock and Craig Kusick drove in three runs apiece and Dan Ford added a homer as the Twins crushed the Tigers, 11-1, for their fourth straight victory and 14th in the last 18 games. Fernando Arroyo, who started for the Tigers, failed to retire a batter, giving up four runs in the first inning on a walk, two singles and two doubles.

Orioles 8, A's 6 at Oakland (night game):
Eddie Murray hit his second homer of the game, connecting with a man on base in the 10th inning, to give the Orioles an 8-6 victory over the Athletics. Ken Singleton drove in three runs for the Orioles with a bases-loaded single and homer. Murray hit his first homer of the game in the eighth. The A's, who had a two-run drive by Tony Armas earlier in the game, rallied for three runs on two walks, a triple by Wayne Gross and sacrifice fly by Armas to tie the score at 6-6 in their half of the eighth.

Red Sox 12, Mariners 4 at Seattle (night game):
Bernie Carbo hit a grand slam during a five-homer barrage that powered the Red Sox to a 12-4 victory over the Mariners. Jim Rice began the slugging with a circuit clout in the first, Butch Hobson connected with two men on base in the second and George Scott rapped a round-tripper with one aboard in the third. Rice hit his second homer of the game for another run in the fifth. Mike Kekich, pitching in relief for the Mariners, walked four batters in the sixth to force in one run before Carbo hit his grand slam.

Cardinals 5, Braves 1 at Atlanta (night game):
Eric Rasmussen pitched a four-hitter and Jerry Mumphrey got that many himself for the Cardinals in a 5-1 victory over the Braves. Mumphrey rapped a double and three singles in five trips. Gary Matthews homered in the second inning for the Braves' lone run. The Cards went ahead to stay with two runs in the third. Lou Brock singled and stole the 885th base of his career. Brock took third after Garry Templeton flied out and continued home on a wild throw by Jeff Burroughs. Mumphrey followed with a double and scored the leading run on a single by Mike Anderson.

Reds 5, Cubs 3 at Cincinnati (night game):
After falling behind, 3-0, the Reds turned on the power with three homers, capping their attack with a two-run blow by Dan Driessen in the 10th inning, to defeat the Cubs, 5-3. Steve Swisher homered for the Cubs in the fifth and Larry Biittner drove in two runs with a double in the seventh. Mike Lum started the Reds' comeback with a circuit clout in the home half of the seventh. Then in the eighth, Joe Morgan singled and George Foster hit his 36th homer of the season to tie the score. Driessen's winning drive in the 10th came after a single by Foster.

Astros 3, Pirates 0 at Houston (night game):
Joe Niekro, who has been unbeatable since coming out of the Astros' bullpen July 24, posted his third victory as a starter and second straight shutout by defeating the Pirates, 3-0. The Astros tagged Bruce Kison for two runs in the fourth inning. Cesar Cedeno singled, Bob Watson was hit by a pitch and both scored on a double by Jose Cruz. Cedeno doubled and Watson singled for their other run in the seventh.

Expos 4, Giants 2 at Montreal (night game):
With a helping hand from Don Stanhouse in the ninth inning, Jackie Brown pitched the Expos to a 4-2 victory over the Giants. The Expos put together a double by Tony Perez and singles by Andre Dawson and Warren Cromartie while scoring three times off Jim Barr in the second inning. Ellis Valentine made it 4-1 with a homer in the third. Brown was lifted after giving up singles by Gary Thomasson and Willie McCovey with one out in the ninth. Stanhouse got Vic Harris on a grounder as one run scored and then retired Tim Foli on a fly to end the game.

Mets 4, Dodgers 3 at New York (day game):
The Mets, who literally walked their way into a tie with two runs in the ninth, proceeded to beat the Dodgers, 4-3, on a single by pinch-hitter Lee Mazzilli in the 14th inning. Davey Lopes homered with a man on base for the Dodgers, who sailed along with a 3-1 lead until the ninth when Charlie Hough, in relief of Doug Rau, walked Felix Millan and Steve Henderson. Elias Sosa came in and struck out John Stearns. Lance Rautzhan took over and retired John Milner on a pop fly, but Mike Vail singled, driving in Millan. Joel Youngblood beat out an infield hit to load the bases and Doug Flynn walked to force in Henderson with the tying run. In the 14th, Youngblood singled for his third hit of the game, advanced on a balk by Mike Garman, reached third on a sacrifice bunt by Flynn and scored the winning run on Mazzilli's pinch-hit.

Phillies 8, Padres 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
Becoming a 15-game winner, Steve Carlton not only swung a good bat in his own cause, driving in three runs, but allowed only six hits and struck out 12 while pitching the Phillies to an 8-1 victory over the Padres. A pass to Davey Johnson and singles by Garry Maddox and Carlton loaded the bases in the second inning and set up two runs on a single by Jerry Martin. The Phils picked up two more in the third and added a pair in the fifth when Carlton singled with the bases loaded. Carlton's third single of the game produced one of the Phillies' final two runs in the seventh.
