Today's scores and summaries:

White Sox 5, Rangers 4 at Chicago (night game):
A passed ball by Jim Sundberg in the sixth inning enabled the White Sox to score what proved to be their winning run in a 5-4 victory over the Rangers. Chet Lemon batted in two runs and Alan Bannister and Jim Essian accounted for one each to give the White Sox a 4-1 lead before Eric Soderholm and Jim Essian singled in the sixth. After a sacrifice, Sundberg was charged with a passed ball on a pitch to Bannister, allowing Soderholm to score. The Rangers, who were stopped on their five-game winning streak, fell short with a three-run rally in the seventh.

Royals 8, Blue Jays 0 at Kansas City (night game):
Enjoying a big night at bat, Fred Patek hit a homer, single and pair of sacrifice flies, driving in four runs, to help the Royals defeat the Blue Jays, 8-0. Patek homered with a man on base in the second inning, hit his sacrifice flies in the third and fifth and singled to set up another run in the seventh. George Brett had four hits. Larry Gura scattered nine hits in his fifth start of the season and registered his first shutout since last September 26.

Tigers 4, Twins 2 at Minnesota (night game):
Dave Rozema, Tigers' candidate for Rookie Pitcher of the Year, hurled a six-hitter and beat the Twins, 4-2, for his fourth straight victory and 11th of the season against four defeats. Ron LeFlore singled, stole second and scored on a single by Steve Kemp for the Tigers in the first inning. After the Twins picked up a run on a single by Roy Smalley in the second, Tito Fuentes tripled and scored on an infield out that put the Tigers ahead again in the third. Rusty Staub then decided the game with a homer in the sixth.

Red Sox 3, A's 1 at Oakland (night game):
Fergie Jenkins, who had not been a winner since June 23, went the distance on a three-hitter and pitched the Red Sox to a 3-1 victory over the Athletics. The A's reached the veteran righthander for their run in the second inning on a single by Jim Tyrone and triple by Willie Crawford. George Scott batted in a matching run with a single in the third and the Red Sox followed with a pair in the seventh on a single by Dwight Evans, wild throw by Sheldon Mallory on a bunt by Rick Miller and singles by Steve Dillard and Rick Burleson.

Braves 5, Expos 2 at Atlanta (night game):
The Braves put together four singles and an infield out for three runs in the third inning and defeated the Expos, 5-2. Warren Cromartie singled and Gary Carter homered for the Expos in the second. After picking up one run in their half of the second, the Braves took the lead in the third with successive singles by Rowland Office, Barry Bonnell, Willie Montanez and Jeff Burroughs, plus an infield out by Gary Matthews. Biff Pocoroba homered for an insurance marker in the eighth.

Phillies 2, Padres 1 at Philadelphia (day game):
Bake McBride, who returned to regular action for the first time since suffering a bruised rib July 27, rapped a run-scoring single in the 10th inning to give the Phillies a 2-1 victory over the Padres. The first mid-week day game of the Phillies' home season drew a crowd of 34,868. The Phillies loaded the bases in the first inning but scored only one run on a wild pitch by Dave Freisleben. The Padres tied the score in the third when Tucker Ashford singled and Gene Richards doubled. In the 10th, with Dan Spillner on the mound for the Padres, Ted Sizemore singled and Tommy Hutton sacrificed. Jerry Martin then ran for Sizemore and scored on McBride's single.
