Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 9, Orioles 5 at California (night game):
Three homers that accounted for six runs powered the Angels to a 9-5 victory over the Orioles, who lost despite a grand slam by Ken Singleton. Bobby Bonds started the Angels' slugging with a solo shot in the first inning. Don Baylor connected with two men on base in the third and Ron Jackson added a two-run blow in the fifth. Ken Brett was tagged for 10 hits and was kayoed in the eighth by Singleton's jackpot wallop, but gained his fourth straight victory after losing his first four decisions with the Angels following his acquisition from the White Sox.

Tigers 6, Rangers 5 at Detroit (day game):
Capping a comeback by the Tigers, Ron LeFlore smashed a homer in the seventh inning to beat the Rangers, 6-5. The Rangers jumped off to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Willie Horton knocked in two runs with a single and Toby Harrah followed with a homer. The Tigers rallied for three runs in their half, two scoring on a double by Jason Thompson and one on a single by Ben Oglivie. Dave May made it 5-3 Rangers with an RBI single in the fifth, but Rusty Staub tied the score with a two-run double in the Tigers' half, setting the stage for LeFlore's winning homer.

Royals 6, White Sox 3 at Kansas City (night game):
George Brett ripped into reliever Dave Hamilton's first pitch for a three-run homer in the seventh inning to lift the Royals to a 6-3 victory over the White Sox. The second largest regular-season crowd in Royals' history, 40,099, saw their favorites come from behind after the White Sox scored all their runs in the first inning. In the home half, Brett tripled and scored on one of Tim Nordbrook's three errors in the game. Fred Patek singled in the seventh and, after being picked off first, reached second by knocking the ball out of Nordbrook's glove. Bob Heise walked, resulting in the exit of Wilbur Wood. Hamilton took over and delivered only one pitch that Brett hit for a homer.

Blue Jays 5, Brewers 3 at Milwaukee (day game):
Doug Ault lashed three hits, including a homer, to spark the Blue Jays to a 5-3 victory over the Brewers. The Blue Jays opened the scoring with three runs in the second inning. A pass to Otto Velez, single by Ault and wild pitch by Jerry Augustine produced the first marker Ault scored on a single by Al Woods. After Alan Ashby also singled, Woods crossed the plate as John Scott grounded out. Ault then supplied the deciding run with his homer in the fourth. Jim Wynn batted in a pair for the Brewers with a double and sacrifice fly.

Twins 6, Indians 5 at Minnesota (day game):
A wild pitch by Wayne Garland with two out in the ninth inning allowed Jerry Terrell to score and enabled the Twins to defeat the Indians, 6-5. Lyman Bostock had two hits and drove in two early runs for the Twins, while Duane Kuiper and Ron Pruitt each had three hits for the Indians. Pruitt's first homer of the season tied the score at 5-5 in the eighth. In the ninth, Craig Kusick was safe on an error by Buddy Bell and gave way on the paths to Terrell. After Terrell moved around to third on a sacrifice by Bob Randall and infield out by Roy Smalley, Garland walked Rod Carew but then beat himself with a wild pitch while facing Butch Wynegar.

Red Sox 2, A's 1 at Oakland (day game):
Rookie righthander Don Aase, with relief help from Bill Campbell in the last two innings, gained his third straight victory as the Red Sox defeated the Athletics, 2-1, to extend their winning streak to nine games. The A's, who lost their eighth in a row, scored in the first on a double by Rodney Scott and single by Manny Sanguillen. The Red Sox knotted the count with a pass to Rick Miller, infield out by Carlton Fisk and single by Butch Hobson in the second before putting over the deciding run in the fifth when Fred Lynn tripled and Jim Rice singled.

Mariners 9, Yankees 2 at Seattle (night game):
The Mariners hammered Catfish Hunter for five runs in the first inning and went on to post a 9-2 victory over the Yankees, who lost their third straight game and fourth of the last five. Bill Stein smashed a three-run homer in the first and Steve Braun, next up, also hit for the circuit in the opening attack on Hunter. The Mariners then eased off until the seventh when Leroy Stanton homered with two men on base to kayo Hunter. After Sparky Lyle relieved, Ruppert Jones hit the first inside-the-park homer in the history of the Kingdome.

Braves 3, Expos 1 at Atlanta (night game):
Posting his 15th complete game, Phil Niekro scattered seven hits and struck out 11 to raise his league-leading total to 171 while pitching the Braves to a 3-1 victory over the Expos. The Braves began the scoring with a run in the third inning on singles by Rowland Office and Gary Matthews around a sacrifice by Barry Bonnell. Singles by Pat Rockett and Office sandwiching a sacrifice by Niekro added a run in the fourth. The Braves picked up a tainted tally in the seventh before Andre Dawson ruined Niekro's shutout bid with a run-scoring single in the eighth.

Cubs 10, Padres 5 at Chicago (day game):
Jerry Morales drove in four runs with three consecutive doubles to pace the Cubs' scoring in a 10-5 victory over the Padres. Morales' third double came during a six-run explosion in the fourth inning. Steve Ontiveros led off with a double and scored on singles by Manny Trillo and George Mitterwald. After a sacrifice by Bill Bonham, Ivan DeJesus was passed intentionally to load the bases. Larry Biittner hit a sacrifice fly and Bill Buckner drove in a run with a single to kayo Randy Jones, who made his first start since June 17 after being out with arm trouble. Morales resumed the attack with a two-run double off reliever Tom Griffin and scored himself on a single by Bobby Murcer.

Reds 8, Pirates 3 at Cincinnati (day game):
Joe Morgan batted in four runs in support of Tom Seaver, who pitched the Reds to an 8-3 victory over the Pirates. Doubles by Pete Rose and Morgan each accounted for two runs in the second inning. Johnny Bench homered in the third. After the Reds picked up an unearned run in the seventh, Morgan homered with a man on base in the eighth. Seaver was tagged for back-to-back homers by Al Oliver and Bobby Tolan in the fifth and gave up the Pirates' final run on another round-tripper by Bill Robinson in the ninth.

[DH] Cardinals 3, Astros 1 (night game) / Astros 4, Cardinals 1 at Houston (night game):
Five-hit pitching by Bob Forsch, who got one inning of relief from Butch Metzger, enabled the Cardinals to take the opener of a twi-night doubleheader, 3-1, but the Astros came back to win the nightcap, 4-1, behind the five-hit hurling of Tom Dixon, who gained his first major league victory. The Cards got their runs in the first game on singles by Lou Brock and Jerry Mumphrey and a double by Garry Templeton. Cesar Cedeno drove in all four of the Astros' runs in the second game with an infield out and two homers.

Giants 7, Mets 3 at New York (night game):
Homers by Darrell Evans and Jack Clark, plus two-run doubles by Marc Hill and Willie McCovey, carried the Giants to a 7-3 victory over the Mets. Evans and Clark hit their round-trippers in succession in the first inning. Hill rapped a bases-loaded double in the sixth and McCovey's double accounted for two of the Giants' three runs in the seventh.

Phillies 1, Dodgers 0 at Philadelphia (night game):
Breaking up a scoreless battle, Ted Sizemore singled a run home with two out in the ninth inning to give the Phillies a 1-0 victory over the Dodgers. Greg Luzinski opened the inning with a single and yielded to pinch-runner Jerry Martin, who stole second as Richie Hebner struck out. After an intentional pass to Garry Maddox, Martin took third following a long fly by Bob Boone and scored the game's only run on Sizemore's single.
