Today's scores and summaries:
Twins 13, Orioles 9 at Baltimore (night game):
With Craig Kusick hitting two homers and driving in five runs, the Twins trimmed the Orioles, 13-9, and regained the lead in the American League West. Kusick's second round-tripper, a two-run blow, climaxed a five-run sixth inning. Andres Mora hit two round-trippers for the Orioles as the two clubs tied the Memorial Stadium single-game record of seven homers set July 26, 1966, when the Indians defeated the Orioles, 7-4.
Red Sox 2, Royals 1 at Boston (night game):
Reggie Cleveland, given the starting assignment when ailing Luis Tiant was a late scratch, allowed five singles over the first 8 2/3 innings while pitching the Red Sox to a 2-1 triumph over the Royals. The Red Sox scored the winning run in the eighth when Carl Yastrzemski reached first on Bob Heise's error, advanced on Carlton Fisk's sacrifice and scored on a single by Dwight Evans. George Scott hit his 29th homer in the fourth as the Red Sox posted their 15th victory in 16 games.
Indians 7, A's 2 at Cleveland (night game):
The Indians, who collected 42 hits and scored 33 runs in the last three games, defeated the Athletics, 7-2, for their third victory in succession and seventh in the last eight games. Mitchell Page's American League record string of 26 stolen bases ended in the first inning when he was picked off first by Rick Waits and thrown out at second.
Tigers 13, Mariners 1 at Detroit (night game):
A grand-slam homer by Milt May and two-run clouts by Ben Oglivie and Ron LeFlore powered the Tigers to a 13-1 romp over the Mariners. This was the ninth straight defeat for the Mariners.
Brewers 6, Rangers 5 at Milwaukee (night game):
The Brewers capped an uphill struggle with two runs in the ninth inning to jolt the Rangers, 6-5. Trailing, 5-4, the Brewers filled the bases on a pinch-single by Jamie Quirk, double by Von Joshua and intentional walk to Jim Wohlford. Darold Knowles relieved Adrian Devine and induced Cecil Cooper to hit into a double play before issuing walks to Jim Wynn and Don Money to tie the score. Sal Bando then delivered the game-winning single.
Yankees 6, White Sox 2 at New York (night game):
Mike Torrez, in six-hit form, pitched the Yankees to a 6-2 triumph over the White Sox for his fifth straight complete-game victory. A two-run single by Graig Nettles, following a costly error by Alan Bannister, keyed the Yankees' four-run fourth inning. White Sox tallies came on homers by Eric Soderholm and Oscar Gamble.
Angels 7, Blue Jays 4 at Toronto (night game):
A three-run fourth inning, when Rance Mulliniks and Andy Etchebarren delivered key singles, sent the Angels on their way to a 7-4 decision over the Blue Jays. Frank Tanana, who struggled through the first four innings, yielded only three hits over the last five innings and had 11 strikeouts to post his 14th victory.
Astros 15, Braves 3 at Atlanta (night game):
The Astros unleashed a 14-hit attack and walloped the Braves, 15-3. Rob Sperring's two-run homer and a grand-slam blast by Art Howe marked a six-run assault on Buzz Capra in the first inning.
Reds 3, Padres 0 at Cincinnati (night game):
Jack Billingham and Pedro Borbon collaborated on a four-hitter and Johnny Bench drove in two runs with a triple and his 27th homer as the Reds silenced the Padres, 3-0.
Giants 6, Dodgers 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
A two-run homer by Terry Whitfield in the second inning triggered a four-run uprising that carried the Giants to a 6-3 victory over the Dodgers behind the five-hit pitching of Ed Halicki and reliever Gary Lavelle.
Mets 7, Cardinals 4 at St. Louis (night game):
John Milner delivered a two-run double in the first inning and duplicated the feat in the fifth inning while leading the Mets to a 7-4 victory over the Cardinals, ending a six-game losing streak. Both Milner blows came off John Denny, who was charged with a fifth straight defeat after winning his first seven decisions.
