Rod Carew hit a double and three singles for the Twins to boost his average to .383. The Orioles scored twice in the seventh on a single by Tony Muser, double by Ken Rudolph, single by Terry Crowley and sacrifice fly by Ken Singleton before Lee May hit a homer to knot the count. Red Sox 5, Royals 3 at Boston (night game):
Butch Hobson not only socked a three-run homer, but also singled and scored the deciding run as the Red Sox defeated the Royals, 5-3. Hobson's homer in the fourth inning put the Red Sox ahead, 3-2, but Frank White tied the score with a double in the seventh. Hobson led off with his single in the seventh. Dwight Evans sacrificed. Hobson advanced to third on an infield hit by Denny Doyle and scored the tie-breaking run when Rick Burleson singled. Fred Lynn added an extra run with a sacrifice fly.
A's 7, Indians 3 at Cleveland (night game):
Two homers by Jerry Tabb and one by Manny Sanguillen helped the Athletics defeat the Indians, 7-3. Tabb and Sanguillen homered in succession in the second inning. Tabb rapped his second round-tripper in the fourth. In addition to his homer, Sanguillen produced RBIs with a grounder in the fifth and single in the seventh. Vida Blue ended his personal four-game losing streak, scattering nine hits, including a two-run homer by Andre Thornton.
Mariners 3, Tigers 2 at Detroit (night game):
The Mariners ended their nine-game losing streak when Bob Stinson hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning to beat the Tigers, 3-2. Glenn Abbott, who pitched once without a decision during the Mariners' losing streak, gained his seventh straight victory.
Rangers 11, Brewers 3 at Milwaukee (night game):
Mike Hargrove hit his third leadoff homer in the last four games to open the Rangers' attack in an 11-3 victory over the Brewers. Singles by Bert Campaneris and Claudell Washington around a stolen base added a run in the first inning. The Rangers then erupted for six runs in the second, two scoring on a double by Washington, who finished the game with four hits. Don Money and Cecil Cooper homered for the Brewers.
Yankees 11, White Sox 10 at New York (night game):
A six-run rally by the White Sox in the ninth inning went to waste when the Yankees came back with a two-run homer by Chris Chambliss to gain an 11-10 victory. Bucky Dent drove in three runs with a single and double and Roy White homered with a man on base to help the Yankees to a 9-4 lead before the White Sox erupted in the ninth with a rally that included a two-run homer by Jim Spencer and two-run single by Oscar Gamble. In the Yankees' half, Thurman Munson walked and Chambliss pulled the game out of the fire with his homer off Randy Wiles.
Angels 7, Blue Jays 2 at Toronto (night game):
Gil Flores, Thad Bosley and Bobby Bonds drove in two runs apiece to support the pitching of Paul Hartzell as the Angels defeated the Blue Jays, 7-2. Hartzell yielded only three hits in eight innings before Dave LaRoche took over for the final frame. Bonds hit his 30th homer of the year in the ninth. The Angels' swift slugger was three stolen bases shy of setting a major league record for stealing 30 bases and hitting 30 homers in each of four different seasons.
Astros 4, Braves 1 at Atlanta (night game):
Rob Sperring rapped three hits, including two doubles, to lead the Astros to a 4-1 victory over the Braves. Sperring singled to set up a run in the first inning and doubled to drive in another run in the eighth. In between, the Astros' two tallies were unearned. Dick Ruthven, the Braves' losing pitcher, hit the first homer of his major league career and also tripled.
Cubs 6, Pirates 5 at Chicago (day game):
The Cubs tied the game with an unearned run in the ninth inning and scored again on an error in the 15th to defeat the Pirates, 6-5. Bill Robinson hit two homers for the Pirates, his second blow coming with two men on base in the eighth. Jose Cardenal opened the Cubs' ninth with a single and was forced on an attempted sacrifice by Mick Kelleher. One out later, Greg Gross doubled and when Omar Moreno made a wild throw from the outfield, Kelleher scored to knot the count at 5-5. Bobby Murcer singled for the Cubs with one out in the 15th. Steve Ontiveros grounded to Rennie Stennett, who missed the tag on Murcer in an attempted forceout and both runners were safe. Gene Clines then hit a slow roller to Stennett. With no play possible at first, Stennett tried to catch Murcer at third, but his throw went wild into the Cubs' dugout and Murcer was waved home with the winning run.
Reds 5, Padres 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
Tom Seaver brought his record with the Reds to 6-2 since coming from the Mets June 15 by pitching a five-hitter to defeat the Padres, 5-1. The Padres' run in the second inning was unearned. George Hendrick singled, stole second, continued to third on a wild throw by Johnny Bench and scored on an infield hit by Mike Champion. The Reds were held to two hits by Bob Owchinko until the sixth when Joe Morgan doubled and Ken Griffey tripled. Dan Spillner relieved and uncorked a wild pitch to allow Griffey to score. The Reds then iced the game in the seventh with a homer by Dan Driessen, single by Seaver and another homer by Pete Rose.

The Giants took a 2-1 lead when Derrel Thomas homered in the eighth. Reggie Smith opened the Dodgers' ninth with a single. After Randy Moffitt replaced John Montefusco, Ron Cey sacrificed. Steve Garvey was retired for the second out. Manny Mota then batted for Glenn Burke and grounded to Madlock, who booted the ball, allowing Smith to score. Mota reached second on the error and yielded the paths to Ted Martinez, who scored the winning run when Dusty Baker singled.
