Tigers 5, Angels 1 at California (night game):
Five-hit pitching by Fernando Arroyo and a three-run homer by Rusty Staub powered the Tigers past the Angels, 5-1, for their fourth straight victory. Arroyo, winning only his second game since June 15, lost the shutout when Tony Solaita hit a homer in the eighth.

White Sox 5, Yankees 3 at Chicago (night game):
Francisco Barrios weathered a home run storm in pitching the White Sox to a 5-3 victory that ended the Yankees' eight-game winning streak. The White Sox scored three runs in last of eighth with Oscar Gamble's single, driving in Richie Zisk from second base, proving decisive.

Royals 8, Orioles 7 at Kansas City (night game):
The Royals scored three runs in the ninth to overcome the Orioles, 8-7. A two-run double by Frank White tied the game and Hal McRae singled up middle to chase home White with the deciding tally.

Twins 5, Red Sox 4 at Minnesota (night game):
The Twins dealt the Red Sox their fourth straight defeat, 5-4, on Larry Hisle's run-scoring single in the last of the ninth. Richie Chiles singled leading off the ninth and was replaced by pinch-runner Jerry Terrell. Bill Campbell relieved Bill Lee and yielded a single to Butch Wynegar and the game-winning hit by Hisle. Butch Hobson had tied the game for the Red Sox with a two-run homer in the top of the ninth.

A's 5, Blue Jays 2 at Oakland (night game):
A three-run homer by Willie Crawford in a four-run seventh inning carried the Athletics to a 5-2 triumph over the Blue Jays that ended their 12-game losing streak at the Oakland Coliseum.

[DH] Indians 12, Mariners 1 (night game) / Mariners 4, Indians 3 at Seattle (night game):
Buddy Bell hit a grand-slam homer and Rico Carty hit a three-run homer and had five runs batted in to support the two-hit pitching of Jim Bibby as the Indians routed the Mariners, 12-1, in the first game of a twi-night doubleheader. The Mariners bounced back to win the second game, 4-3, with three runs in the fifth. Losing pitcher Wayne Garland walked Ruppert Jones to force in the tying run, then threw a wild pitch to permit Jose Baez to score the eventual winning run.

Rangers 8, Brewers 7 at Texas (night game):
A two-run single by Jim Sundberg in the last of the seventh inning enabled the Rangers to rally past the Brewers, 8-7, and end their three-game losing streak.

Phillies 5, Braves 4 at Atlanta (night game):
A pinch-single by Davey Johnson scored Bake McBride with what proved to be the winning run in a two-run seventh inning that netted the Phillies a 5-4 triumph over the Braves. McBride and Jay Johnstone hit solo homers to help the Phillies widen their lead over the Pirates in the National League East to 7½ games.

Cubs 3, Giants 2 at Chicago (day game):
Bobby Murcer's home run in the eighth inning, his 24th of the season, proved to be the deciding blow as the Cubs defeated the Giants, 3-2. Rick Reuschel, with help from Willie Hernandez in the ninth, pitched the Cubs to their eighth straight victory over the Giants this season.

Expos 5, Reds 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
Warren Cromartie belted a two-run homer, snapping a scoreless tie, in the fifth inning and the Expos went on to down the Reds, 5-1, behind the four-hit pitching of Wayne Twitchell and reliever Joe Kerrigan.

Mets 2, Astros 1 at New York (night game):
The Mets snapped their five-game losing streak when Bruce Boisclair delivered a two-run double in the seventh inning to produce a 2-1 victory over the Astros.

Padres 1, Pirates 0 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Bob Shirley and Rollie Fingers combined on a seven-hitter and Gene Tenace stroked his 14th home run to send the Padres to a 1-0 victory over the Pirates. Fingers worked 1 2/3 innings and was credited with his major league-leading 28th save.

Cardinals 8, Dodgers 6 at St. Louis (night game):
The Cardinals staggered the Dodgers, 8-6, with a seven-run, ninth-inning outburst capped by Roger Freed's pinch-homer with two teammates aboard. A grand slam by Steve Yeager in the third helped the Dodgers shape the 6-1 lead they carried into the ninth.
